  1. Only You - Yazoo or The Flying Pickets, take your pick... ... pick The Flying Pickets and you're dead to me! 😉
  2. And as if to qualify my above post, I go to scroll through facebook and the first picture that comes up is this one from the, 'Underdog - Obscure, Trashy and Kool Guitars and Amps' group. How is this not more exciting and pleasurable than a car? 😁
  3. This is pretty much exactly my outlook on it, with the addition of my enjoyment of restoring/refinishing instruments. Spare money has very little interest to me, but owning and using lots of different basses does. I can leave my money in the bank and let them make money off it, or tie it up in basses I enjoy and I'll make money off it. Seems a no brainer to me. Collecting money seems far more ludicrous to me than collecting basses. I also don't have any other expensive hobbies, golf, photography, etc. Being in the car trade my whole life has left me bored with them, I buy a car for about £1500, keep it until it's not worth repairing and scrap it, typically around 6 or 7 years, so let's say £225 per year, where lots/most pay that per month for theirs. The odd thing to me is that society sees spending £30k on an exceptionally speedily depreciating car as the norm, but spending £30k on something like a bass collection as a 'problem'. You be very hard pushed to spend £30k on basses, to find out in 10 to 15 years time they're only worth £1,500, whereas this is normal for a car. Obviously there are exceptions to this, as with anything.

  12. Lovely prominent bass in this live mix of Grinding Halt from an early show. Also some good shots of Robert Smiths Woolworths Top Twenty pickup fitted to his Fender Jazzmaster.
  13. Are these the same pickups as in the Embassy bass? I assumed the Vintage Pro Thunderbird and the Embassy had the same pickups, bridge and tailpiece. If so then I'm more than happy with the Embassy pickups. Great sounding bass.
  14. I love Grinding Halt from the first album. The first track that really caught me was Charlotte Sometimes. Being born in '73 I was too young to know them from the start, and had only heard pop tracks like The Love cats that would've been played on the radio, I swapped Little Creatures by Talking Heads for Standing On A Beach (cassettes) with a mate and as it was halfway through, the first track that played was Charlotte Sometimes. I was amazed at what I was hearing. There started a life long love of The Cure. There are so many phases to explore, the punky beginnings, the gothic trilogy, the electro poppy rebellion against their record company (not sure I totally believe those stories), the jangly mid eighties pop, the list goes on. Their singles and albums cover such a range of styles but still completely 'The cure'.
  15. Fire Fire - The Meteors
  16. I'm going to go curve ball and say try their B sides. The B side of the earlier cassette singles collection, 'Standing On A Beach' (Staring At The Sea was the CD version without the B sides, or was it the other way round?) is fantastic, but hard to find now. Luckily you can buy a four disc CD compilation of B sides and rarities called Join The Dots, disc one is essentially the B side of Staring At The Sea with some extras thrown in. Confused? I am, 😄. In short Join The Dots, disc one, is most of their B sides up to around 85ish, and it's great. Throwing away songs on a B side that most bands could only dream of writing and releasing as a single. They quite often marry up sonically with the corresponding single. As Inbetween Days caught your ear here's the B side, The Exploding Boy, with some fantastic drumming from Boris Williams.
