  1. Does anyone have any experience with the Warmoth necks and bodies? I really fancy a rear routed PJ P-Bass 5er, basically the Duff Mckagan Signature model but with another string.

Getting a full custom build is a bit (lot!) out of my budget and Warmoth do a P-Bass 5 Deluxe body for about $200 plus shipping. So $400 plus shipping for the woodwork and then the hardware, some of which I already have seems a better budget than getting someone to make me what I want.

Though I do fancy the Shuker Build-a-Bass week course, just to make me save up some more :)

    Edited for spelling :P

  2. This bass is even more crazy in the wood as it were, how it stays in one piece I have no idea :) I'd be interested in how far the gap between the horn the bridge is attached to and the side of the skull closes when it's strung and tuned though.

  3. A little review of last night.

Deadfire - The Craufurd Arms, Wolverton. 23-10-13

The Deadfire tour has had a lot of gigs fall through, it's Ou7shined's story so I'll let him tell it if he wants to, but they've had to rush about finding places to play. Last nights show was supposed to be in Coventry, but ended up in Wolverton.

A somewhat odd gig in that it was the pub's weekly Open Mic night and not a "regular" show but the band were up as the feature band and put on a good performance.

All the musicians I saw were of the highest standard playing a variety of styles including reggae, blues and a sort of blues rock. The local lads had their own mates in as support which filled the pub up although it was by no means busy but the landlords were enthusiastic about the evening and certainly danced about enough.

Deadfire kicked off with "War", a proper widdly riffed bit of headbanging material. The rest of the set was just as good with some great riffs from Gordon, sold drums from Tunk
and dancing basslines from our own Ou7shined who is in danger of banging his head on the floor at some point, whilst Charlie on vox was wandering off the front of the stage to become part of their own audience

I think they did an excellent job all things considered, problems with the tour and playing to a mostly empty pub though Charlie got a few people in front for the last song, "My Crown" by wandering around and dragging folks in from the periphery

Hopefully they'll be back down this part of the world again soon and in a position to play a named gig.

I even had the privilege of holding the Goat-on-a-stick bass :)

  4. Sorry dude!

Of course you can have it Bluejay. I'll weigh it tonight and give you an idea of the postage cost, it shouldn't be too much. I don't want anything for it but you can get me a cup of tea if I make it to the LBGS or the next SE Bash :)

What? You crazy kids, who's having it now? :P

  5. Thank you for your input. It was an idea I had as my only working bass is an Aria Pro II 5er, and even when the 4 was complete it was hardly used so I thought as I'm doing the work refinishing the 4 maybe I could turn it into a 5 in the process instead of looking for a new one.

It would be nice to have a second bass though as it will be another PJ 5er I can't see a compelling reason at the moment. Unless the Aria goes wrong in some way.

  6. It's not! The very old Boss pedals worked perfectly from a 9v battery, but the LED wouldn't light up from 9v mains, only 12v. These are marked ACA power. Then they changed the circuit and the PSU. These newer ones only work on 9v mains

  7. This probably counts as a silly question. I've got a P-Bass copy that I'm refinishing and I was wondering whether I could rebuild it as a 5er rather than the 4 it is at the moment.

Presumably all I need is a new neck, pups and bridge? Will the new neck fit the existing neck pocket on the body?

If it's going to be too much work then look for a half finished p-copy in the marketplace :P

  8. The LED on my GE-7B has stopped working. It's an MIJ one with the ACA sticker so I know it needs 12V from mains not 9 and it was OK.

I don't suppose anyone knows the spec of the LED so that I can get another one to replace it do they?

Or whether I can leave the one on the board alone and add a new one attached to the output jack or something? Electronics isn't my strong point :)

    Look for a Sandberg VT5.

The weird thing is, I've already got an Aria Magna PJ 5 string, so I'm not exactly in need of one. But it's not a real P-Bass! Funny the things we want!

Interesting point. Apart from the body conversion, if the build is simply adding branded pups, bridge etc, to an average bass. Would this increase the value?

Or when it comes to sell is it better to strip the bass back to standard and sell the parts separately?

You couldn't put it back, not with an extra pickup routing in it. Well, you could, but it would cost far too much I suspect.

  10. I've got a serious amount of GAS for a 5 string P-Bass with a PJ configuration. I know they exist but they seem to be quite rare and not available new.
Would it be wrong to get a normal one and have a competent fellow fit the jazz pickup?

Not that I'm in a position to buy a P-Bass at the moment regardless of what sort it is, but you can't help thinking of these things can you?!
