1. I think the room last time was a little too cosy for comfort to be honest, but i do completely agree with the noise/headphone amp point. It would have been nice to have enough room for a few chairs to be scattered around, and make it a bit more of a social day, as well as just drooling over toys. Maybe somewhere like Peterborough would be good, as they have excellent train links and plenty of possible venues.
2. I've thought of doing this myself on a 35" scale 4-string i have, and as long as you put on some decent gauge strings i reckon it'll be fine. I think it La Bella that make the "Low Rider" string sets, which are especially heavy 4-string sets for down-tuning. I'm gonna try a 1.15/1.05/.85/.65 set and see what happens.
3. I've been a big Primus fan since about '93, and i think they're bloody great. Recently in one or another american bass mag they listed big bad Les' discography. He's recorded something ridiculous like 22 albums in the last 15 years. How the hell do you remember all that? Oh yeah, and the video with the big rubber cowboy suits in is the best music video ever. period.
4. Check out the Offspring geetarist "Noodles" signiature Ibanez geetar. It was (originally) loads of pieces of duct-tape, which was laquered over. I think it looks great, but i can see why others would not.
5. I play in three bands, and work purely on a first come-first served priority basis. I keep my gig list on my MySpace page updated as soon as a gig is booked, so everybody can see when i'm free or not. I also use the organiser on my mobile to keep abreast of things. Theres been a few times when a much better gig with one band has been offered after i've already agreed to another, and i will always try to find a dep for the band, but if it comes to it i will always go with the band who asked me first. Just seems to be the fair way with me. But yeah, i see no reason why you can't split your time between different projects. Last year i had a Bryan Adams/average wedding disco gig on Friday, a Bjork/Electronica gig on the Saturday, and a live two-hour Drum and Bass gig on the Sunday. Better busy than the other.......!
6.
Here's mine again. Trace 1210 combo and 1518 cab.
I think i've met you Tinman..... Did you play at Nicks Cavern in Horncastle with a rock covers group at somepoint either this or last year? I remember talking to a dude with two BTB's and drooling over them. If it is you, then i was the tall guy with the slurred speech and the South African friend/holder-upper.
7. I must have severe "acid hands" then, as i change my strings when they start making that "plop" sound (no sustain, just a middle-y fart sound) which can take anything from a couple of gigs to a few weeks to occur. My hands do sweat a lot when i play though, and i'm currently trying out a few sets of extended-life strings. I've so far tried Elixirs, DR Evergreens, Warwick EMPs and Dean Markley Blue Steels. The Elixirs have been the best so far, as they seem to start off already sounding a little worn-in, and keep that sound for quite a while. The Warwick EMPs sound great and seem to be lasting well, but they feel rough as arseholes and make your fingers sting if you do too much slidey-stuff. Strings like Elites, Roto's, and Ernie Balls seem to last about 3 hours with me. Wheres that string deal when you need one?
8. I paid £500 for mine about 18months ago, and don't regret one penny. These are by far the most versatile amp i've played through by a country mile, and this is easily worth £200 for the compression alone. Have a free bump, and if you ever decide to flog those cabs PLEASE let me have first refusal...!
9. This is my "guess-who-got-the-call-from-the-drummer-saying-he-needs-some-album-shots-by-tomorrow-evening-because-its-going-to-print-monday" attempt at kitchen photography.
10. Howdy y'all, thought i'd say howdoo on this, the new basstalk/world/chat-incarnation. I'm Jay, i'm 31, and i live in Norfolk, where a mans wife and sister are usually the same person. I play in Coyote Wrecks, a 3-piece rock and blues band, with Paddy Stratton (of Levellers notoriety) and Motorhead/Hawkwind/Sabbath/Girlschool drum tech Billy Fleming. Gear wise, i've got a Warwick Katana 5-string, 2 Jackson 4-strings, and 2 Trabens (one 4 and one 5.) Amp-wise i run a Yamaha amp with two Peavey cabs (a 4x10 and a 2x10) and for pub gigs i run a Laney RGB300. (with upgraded Celestion 500w driver in it.) I've also got a Line 6 Bass pod XT live, and a Behringer Bass V-Amp Pro, along with a few stomp boxes etc. I'm sure this has been as exciting for your reading pleasure as it was for my typing pleasure.
11. That 1.75 looks monstrous, you could probably tow a car with that. Warwick recently sent me two packs of the new "EMP" strings so i chucked one set on, and although they sound superb and (seemingly) last well, i just don't like them that much. They feel a bit too rough for my babysoft fingers (like Elites do) and i'm used to smoother strings (usually Elixirs.) But they do sound the monkeys chuff, and the harmonics ring FOREVER. Today i plucked two harmonics, and then made a cup of tea. And yes you could still just-about hear them during the first sip.

13. Hiya mate, Don't suppose i could tempt you to part with your two BBT210's for my Ibanez BTB 6-string could i? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:IT&ih=017 with maybe a cash adjustment from my side? PM me dude......
14. Good topic.... I don't think i'm ever going to be as good as i would like to be, so hopefully i'll still be keen to learn new stuff for many years to come. I'm happier now with my playing than i've been before, but i know in a years time i'll be a lot happier still. When it comes to receiving compliments, i really don't give a bugger unless its off another musician i like and respect. I don't wanna sound like an arsehole, but i've played plenty of gigs where the hardest b-line is bloody "summer of '69" and someone comes up and says "wow, you played really well" and i'm thinking "did i? did i really?" just because i know if i was in the audience and saw me playing, i wouldn't think it was by any means impressive. And as for practicing (is that spelt right?!?) i really don't get concerned if i don't pick up a bass for a week or if i play 6hrs a day. When i first started (14yrs ago now, jesus...) i used to play for 6-8hrs a day, 7 days a week, but now the idea of playing when i'm not "feeling" it is completely counter-productive, like having sex when you don't want to. So yeah, i'm happy with my playing for now, but i do consider myself a 2-out-of-10, and hopefully that will drive me to one day being more than that.
15. Just thought i'd drop a few words of thanks and kudos to the following for the recent stuff i've bought from these top fellas; Steve K and Nick Brown for the cd's, AndyMM for the amazing vids and Marky Bass for the books. All of these have been easy and quick transactions (way more pleasant than EvilBay) and i've got some real bargains from them. Cheers dudes! -Jase.
16.
Hi mate - what's the bass you're playing in top photo?... looks really cool...
Its my Traben Torrent 5-String, take a look at them here; http://www.trabenbass.com/ They stopped producing the Torrent model a while ago, but i also have a Phoenix Custom and had an Array Custom (which i flogged as it wasn't as good as my Torrent.) I'm playing Donnington next month with Hawkwind, Skyclad and Utah Saints, and its going to be my main "weekend-weapon!"
17. A lovely me; At Rehearsals; A Cartoon; Beer-ed out at a festival; With my mate Ben for the annual Amsterdam piss-up with a homeless dude, who eventually named our band;
