Cheers Chris[/quote] No, what I meant was that the elephant ear bit of each tuner is held onto the shaft by a rivet which makes the reverse ones easy to spot from a distance (also the "ear" isn't quite as big on those so the shaft appears a bit longer).

I've just downloaded the trail and put in a couple of o5b songs. It works better than I expected it to - its amazing its able to work at all, but on my quick test it only gave a very rough approximation and there's a lot that needs to be corrected by ear. The bass tracking missed a lot of notes out and quite a few extra guitar chords crept in. If it was a freebie I'd be impressed, but I wouldn't spend any money on it.

If I saw one matching the description for sale I would want to check if the serial matched (or looked dodgy) before reporting it as possibly stolen

Did the ones you bought look like this with the fender logo? My '81 P has tuners identical to these - I fitted a hipshot D-tuner to it with no drilling so the hipshots would work as well Unless its an [s]early 70s [/s] 50s or 60s neck in which case you'd need the reverse type which I believe were phased out around 1966 (I'll check my books later when I get home) or was it the reverse ones (with rivets) you bought that didn't fit?

They are currently listed at £23 for a 20' one with angled jack from stringsdirect.co.uk. Its a lovely bass. I don't think the lack of dot markers on the others ones mentioned would be much of a disadvantage - The edge markers should still be present.

Have you seen the Planet waves Circuit Breaker Cables? I love 'em. The business end can be purchased separately (straight or right angle) if you prefer making your own cables. I stopped using the mute on my old amp when I started using PW CBs - Just press the little latching switch and the input is muted. I originally got it for quickly swapping from one bass to another, but its ideal for silent tuning with the SOS LED tuner as well. Since I started using my little Mark II I never even missed the lack of mute on it.

Am I the only one looking forward to seeing Clatter? Oh well...

Its better to shim the neck rather than filing the saddles. Just cut a strip from piece of card. Take out the neck screws put the shim in the neck pocket and reasemble.The angle the neck sits will be steeper now and you can raise/lower the bridge saddles to get the optimum height. I wanted very low action but the bridge high, so I used a strip from the wife's credit card when I made my fretless precision.

I also found a vid on one of his sites where he and his friend are painfully playing lead & rhythm on two hideously garish acoustics that sounds as good as they look.

Its not the worst modification on ebay at the moment though. It looks like this chap didn't realise that it would be a good idea to dismantle the bass before painting the body. I could be wrong, but it certainly looks to me like the pickguard and body were sprayed together. I have a few basses with Glued-in/ Neck thru construction and I've come to the conclusion that I prefer Bolt on Necks as I like to be able to shim the neck to get the angle just right for the set up. Thru necks are supposed to have better sustain, but I don't need notes to sustain while I get a bite to eat, also it could be my imagination but traditional Fender-Style bolt-ons seem to have more "punch" whereas glued/thru necked instruments have less oomph to the attack. So what do you like best & why?

Another vote here for the Markbass Little Mark II. I use a Schroeder 1212L with mine and I'm very happy not just with the sound, but the portability as well.

The Graphtech Ghost system looks like a good bit of gear if you *did* want to try a piezo bridge.

This looks to be a bargain at £325 buy-it-now. I could learn to live with the tacky Sting signature 12th fret block, but the holes drilled for the thumbrest would anny the hell out of me. I'm not aware of there is a limitation of a single hardware device in LE (Thats not to say there definitely isn't one, but I am not aware of it and I have not found it documented anywhere), but there is a limit of 8 physical inputs/outputs. There is a free patch available from [url="http://steinberg.net"]http://steinberg.net[/url] if you're running an earlier version with a lower limit.

I don't play using harmionics, but I do use them for checking tuning & intonation. I don't recall harmonics being particularly strong on the dean pace electric upright I used to own, which had a gotoh-type bridge with piezo elements & a complete absence of magnetic pickups.
