1. erm, it is *out there* for those that know where to look *cough*, and erm, preview it before investing in the real thing... (which I will, very impressed).... was watching a youtube on his left hand technique and one fo the guys said something lie "see him and learn form him while hes still with us" ... terrible to say, but true!! ...
2. I managed to catch a good chunk of this dvd at a friends today "François Rabbath - The Art of the Bow - DVD", quite amazing (for a newbie) ... lots of things falling into place very fast ... available here, I'm saving my pennies to get my own copy!
3.
@ Daf - those vids are way the best i've seen. A great resource for any beginner.
ditto - thanks Daf - superb ... my hand NOT holding up well to the bowing, I had got nicely up to 30 mins practice on pizz and getting the left hand elbow up, etc .... introduce the bow and bloody hell, right back to the start .... guess its just practise over and over...
4. thanks peeps - have been killing the cat for quite some time today .... just when I had got used to and strengthened up my left hand and right Pizz hand, along comes the bow and throws everything back to square one ... fun fun fun ... see what teacher says on Monday about said bow and rosin!
5. Thanks Nigel - I shall persist and try another 150+ rubbings! ... update - ok, sandpaper wasn't really doing it for me so took out the cheese grater and THEN after 150+ strokes the thing started to bite! Now the bow is gripping and I'm happily killing multiple cats (eh hello! ... this bowing lark is not easy at all!!!)
6. Know you already ordered FatBack but for future ref! I just got this info from Crehans (Ireland) Nyman bass rosin @ €10.50 Pops €10.50 Milant Deroux €10.00. (Thats in the shop mind - not sure about postage) /A.
7. Hey Guys, received my YitaMusic carbon bow today (damn good, only ordered on Tue!). KNowing I needed rosin I purchased the only box the music store had "Hidersine de luxe all weather bass rosin". I expected it to be somewhat pliable(ish) or even ever so slightly chalkey .. but this baby is *rock solid*. I can only describe it like hard hard hard hard candy!! .... I googled it up and advice seemed to be to sand it down (which I did), and then stroke the bow about 50+++ times, which I did, and .... nothing ... nothing coming off, no little bits on the bow, nada ... have I a dud or am I making some very stupid newb mistake here? Comments (and spankings if deserved) welcome! Allen.
8. If its lay-down length you are after... I had a Terrano II (two of them, one after the other), long wheel base would take 6' in the back from rear door to back of passenger seat - used the thing over very rough terrain and through floods etc, and solid as the proverbial.... did have a tendancy to *drink* fuel though! ... now back to a hatchback laguna, 1 x seat down and the DB fits in very nicely with no fighting...
9. My very limited understanding is that its to do amongst other things with balance? ... its seemingly a very difficult thing to get a really good balance so that the bow has *just* the correct* (yet even) weight along its length so that you are not fighting or constantly adjusting your hand/pressure to get an even balanced sound throughout the stroke .... but I know nothing so will stand bitch slapped and corrected if needs be
10. I came *very* close to ordering one of these and would have done had I not ventured into the Den of bass delight that is Mr Tom Barretts shop in Ireland.... Gareth Hughes I think was expounding the virtues of the Thomann 22 which is also a Hora bass I believe. I have also read on Talkbass that the 22/33 has a lot of respect and they are consistantly good quality for what they are. Hope that helps! Allen.
11. @Gareth - do you wear the bow-tie often? ... or is it only weddings and bar mitzfas?
12.
I can just imagine the GAS brewing.
tell me about it Gareth! ... the EBs have hung on the wall since "SHE" came into the house.... the dogs now sleep during practise (half) hour... As I was there, surrounded by all that big bottom end lovliness, I was really torn between sensible (lets not go over bidget now, no more than €1500...) to ... yea right, you KNOW what happens when your Captain sensible hat is on ... do the right thing ... So I did and frankly, the "bring it back for full price or as near to..." (upgrade) deal swung it for me..
13. Hi Frank - hes holding it until the end of March as I am going to be away and in theory wont ahve the time to travel to get it (3+ hrs drive), but I am going to make a few phone calls tomorrow to see if I can hack the cash a bit sooner than my budget allows which would enable me to pick it up far sooner before I travel - I shall keep you yawningly updated now.... back to the scale of G-major....
14. I wonder can I blame young Sam Fatgoogle for my extravagance today.... I visited Tom Barretts Bass Shop in Galway (out west in Ireland) - what a lovely man and what a fantastic array of instruments. The chap is obviously a well known luthier, and had an array of instruments in various states of undress for repair, setup and general TLC from everyone from Jazz players (some local names I heard of) and the National Concert Orchestra etc. His range goes from a very nice all laminate Shen (SB80 I think, at €1200) right the way up to the most magnificent piece of art I have ever seen in craftsmanship (circa €18k). At this stage *I know nothing and admit it*, I was a bit confused by the laminate/carver/hybrid debate, so kindly asked Tom to have a Pizz (ahem) and an Arco spin on one of each, playing the same thing over and over.... to my very untrained ear, there was a definate and wide differance between the Laminate and the fully Carved, and a less distinct but noticable differance between the Carved and Hybrid. In the past I have paid low for things and always regretted it, and not gone for something I liked in preference for something I could afford *then and there* (with no financial pain), so this time, after hearing the difference, I decided to go completely nutty and have laid down a deposit on almost twice my budget.... but boy, is it sweet! ... a Christopher 3/4 fully carved flatback. I have been happily thumping away on my teachers student instrument the past while, quickly building up "fat fingers"... I played the few miserable scales I now know on the Chris and ..... wow ... it just fell into place. Action ... sublime, neck, like silk, flat-back - crooked in nicely against my knee in a way the round-back didn’t seem to.. One of the interesting things is the chaps trade-in policy.... bring a bass back you bought from him and providing its pretty much in the same condition you got it from him (ie: you take good care of it) he will give you the full price you paid for it against an upgrade.... can't ask fairer than that! If you happen to be out west of Ireland, worth an advance call to check hes there! http://www.doublebassireland.com/Home.html
15. Practising hang-tough shapes already ....
16. All good - if anyones interested we could grab a coffee or something beforehand and go in a group - intimidate the pure classical folk with our rockin/blusey/jazzin hooliganism antics and posing and stuff ... or just hang out and look cool cos we'd be in a group and everyone else would be standing around the wall
17.
any chance id see a EUB there or will it be a totally classical affair anyway it could be interesting
A friend of mine who is a Bass Teacher (Mainly kids) and a very fine oboeist (if that is the word!) told me about it - I'd safely say there will be only classical, but I have it in my diary - worth a visit to hear some fine musicmanship I'd say if you are around ... that Prof Wolf can certingly handle a bow! 21. After searching for a *long* time Sam put me in touch with a very fine teacher - thought I was going to have to travel quite a distance to get lessons with him but turns out he has classes in my town every Monday. One lesson and 30 minutes practise later ... (the tip/side of) MY FINGER HURTS ... Strangly, whereas when I toddle on my electric, the dogs only allow me to play about 15/20 minutes before giving out and barking and such, they stayed fast asleep while I grinned from ear to ear with the new toy! (Teacher loaner) So - thanking Mr FatGoogle!
22.
I post vids of this lady whenever someone goes 'I have small hands so I need a skinny necked/short scale/miniature bass instead of learning how to play properly'.
I shall stop reading BassChat *now* and go do some practise <spanks self....>
23.
Now that I like and very fitting!
My (very very large) all black dog is offically called that, but short name, Rosie ... I was warned that Rosies are bad bad girls .... I suspect your new beauty lives up to the reviews
