3. Hi all, thought some of you might have some experience of this so here goes! I need to do some on camera recording, but want the sound to be good. What I read says the best job is to use a lav mike pinned to the collar, stuck into something like a Zoom H1 hung on a belt / in a pocket. The idea then is to use a clapper (hands!) ... record away on the camera and the zoom, then when editing, use the clap to bring the two together and marry the video with the good quality lav recorded sound. What I have read here and elsewhere says the Zoom is a good little unit and should do the trick. What I am not sure about is the lav mike. I have seen demos of a Rode Smartlav - seems good, but there is an underlying hiss/background noise from it. The question is, for those who know the Zoom ... can I tweak out much of the background noise etc using the Zoom? thanks, Al.
4.
great basses
yup, sale agreed it would seem!
5. The Thomann 22 (hybrid/solid top) has got serious love also love the years .. made by Hora I think in Romania ... I keep mentioning it to the missus ... one of these days...
6.
I'm been in contact with stenaline and they say I can bring it aboard but say I may have to put it in the luggage room on the ship which I can carry it in and secure if it's not quite.
I'd get a name and phone number - I approached the desk in Holyhead with a bass and was not allowed to bring it through myself, therefore gave it back to the person dropping me to the ferry to bring back until I was over again with a car.
7. regarding Ferry - Stenaline (Holyhead/Dublin) - they wont allow the DB to be carried on by hand, it *must* go into the hold and of course they wont guarantee it. Know this as I tried to bring one by hand before and decided at the last minute to leave it behind as I didnt want to chance it in the hold without a hard case. If it was me I'd either try to find someone going over by car who could fit it in, or as per other suggestions here get a cheap hard-case and get it couriered. safer / insurable / less hassle etc. good luck with it!
8. @fatgoogle keep an eye on Tom Barretts website, he helps organise double bass masterclasses in Ireland. I was at one of them and it was amazing: http://doublebassireland.com/recent-events
9. Really good score! ... matter of interest, what was the auction site?
10. I was looking at bass bags on thomann the other day and saw some with small wheels, useful, but more useful for a bike, back pack style shoulder straps...
11. @FatGoogle ... You most likely know already, but if not, Tom Barrett runs the only dedicated double bass shop out of Galway ... Has some nice bows and a great selection of DBs to noodle on.. He also has a superb reputation as a luthier and bow stringer! Do a net search for double bass Ireland and you'll find him!
12. Hi, I finally settled on a Christopher Prominence DB401 (Gamba flatback) model. http://www.christopher-bass.de/dbass_e.html I had first got a Shen 80 Laminate, and while it got me going, I wasn't satisfied at all really. I went back to the shop (Tom Barrett, Galway Ireland) and eventually settled on the Christopher and I am extremly glad I did. Every time I pass it I have to stop and have a quick noodle. Its solid all the way through and was superbly setup by Tom. My teacher was extremly pleased with the purchase and loved the sound/quality/setup/value combination! Hope this helps a wee bit in your quest. Allen.
13. Teacher (before we broke for hols) asked me to get the Simindal "20 studies in all keys" ... I dont seemt o be abel to locate same and am wondering if he got it wrong and he is referring to this? Franz Simandl - 30 Etudes http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product/1967-...NIMENT_CDS.html thanks!
14. Great suggestions all - many thanks. Allen.
15. Hi all, while Simandal is great for working through and getting the positions worked out etc, I am being a bit driven around the bend with the lack of... well melody in the stuff. I fully appreciate the aim of the book and will continue to work though it (slowly) but am wondering if anyone has recommendations for a beginners based DB book that one could plod through and play some interesting snippits / semi-recognisable melodies etc? Thanks all. Allen. ps: I recently upgraded my Shen all ply instrument to a solid "Christopher" model setup by Tom Barrett (Galway, Ireland) ... what an amazing differance in the sound! ... will throw up a few pics as soon as I have a camera handy.
16. Hi ZMech, yep - French ... I suggested switching to German to Teach and he has gently nudged me to stick with the French for a while (he uses French) and feels its just a matter of persisting until I find a position that does not have this effect. Was at my Chripractor the other day for my back thingy and mentioned the bow issue - she immediatly jumped on the fact that it seems my thumbs are double-jointed or something which may be lending to the general issue ... will see what happens! /A.
17. thanks all - great stuff there. FatG .. doing good with Billy (teacher) ... alternating between making great progress some weeks and feeling like I've never had the beast in my hands *ever* other days ... not having a great time with the bow - serious issues with a nerve at the end of my thumb going to sleep and such ... working on that at the moment. I do pretty ok (albeit slowely) now at very basic sight-reading *once its Pizz* ... however as soon as I bring in the bow that combination just makes it a lot lot harder ... still, its all about getting in the hours I suppose!! Best of luck in the leaving!!!! /A.
18. Hey All, towards the end of (mainly classical) DB lessons teach gets out a geeetar and strums along chord progresions getting me to pizz out walking lines / scales etc. Its been suggested I look on tinterweb or ask around for some backing MP3s with simple chord progresssions I could play over on loops etc ... anyone any ideas of this kind of thing ready made before I annoy someone with Garage-Band to work some stuff up for me? thanks! Allen.
19. I use the Hercules and find it extremly sturdy and stable. I'm quite happy to have the DB stand there for a while even with three large dogs around the house
20. The chaps on TalkBass.com seem to do a good job of at least guessing, whatever about correct recognising .. give a shout out there perhaps! Also - if you happen to be out Galway direction, Tom Barrett is a fantastic source of all things DB and a mine of information - might be able to assist you also. /A.
21. I went to the Expo today ... for those local who missed it - you *really* missed out! ... it was fantastic. The master-classes were pure magic, I learned so much watching others being coached, and the recital at the end was simply incredible.. If its on again next year, don’t miss it! /A.
