    Paging @Mike

Cheers Frank. To be honest, I have only worked on one specific ship, and it's not part of a cruise line (this one) so my experience will not be the usual. And I was only on 3 week contracts. But if it's helpful, double bass and amp were provided, I played every night for three hours (that gets the old stamina together, especially on an unfamiliar double bass) in a jazz trio. As this ship is quite quiet, often there is only a handful of people we were playing to. If no-one, we'd play standards changing key each time and doing metric modulations. Good fun! (apparently) I was lucky as I didn't have to share a cabin and had modified guest status, but had I had the opportunity to it for longer periods when I was younger and single I would have done it. See the world, get your chops together, get out before you get too jaded!

I only have positive things to say, the first time I traveled to the shop was to buy a Dingwall Combustion bass, instead of a taxi Marks wife came and picked me up from the train station in her car AND she dropped me back off after buying the bass. While in store Mark let me take a tort pick guard off one Combustion bass and put it on the one I was buying, no fuss, just did it, let me play on what I wanted while I was there, all ace.

I have also sold a Dingwall Afterburner II bass through Bassdirect, again, Mark was good on email, told me once the bass had arrived with him, gave me a heads up when it was online, told me when it was bought and sent me my money with no delay.

My most recent transaction I wanted to buy a second hand bass from him, I cheekily asked for a bit of money off, he agreed, sent the bass out and I received it the next day.

It's upsetting that people have had opposite experiences to me but I understand not every transaction / day is the same.

    Exceptional service! Nice one.

    Sorry in advance, rant incoming.

Why to shops say items are in stock, when they aren't in stock?

I ordered something from a well-known UK musical instrument supplier (probably not who you're thinking of though!) last week. The item I ordered was showing as "in stock" on their webpage.

I ordered specifically from them because it was marked as "in stock" as I needed it for this coming weekend. Everywhere else had it marked 'to order' or 'back ordered'.

It has been five days since I placed the order, so I've just given them a call just to check it will arrive in time.

"Oh, it's been delayed coming from our supplier", was the answer. "But your website said you had it 'in stock'?' queried I.

"Well, when it arrives with us from our supplier we will have it in stock, won't we?" came the response.

"But that doesn't mean it was in stock with you when I placed my order on the basis of it saying 'in stock' on your website, does it?" quoth I.

"But it will be when it arrives with us, won't it?" was the further retort.

I mean? Whut? If it is not physically in their possession pending delivery, it is not "in stock". It is "on order" or "awaiting delivery" or "backordered". Even more clearly, it is a product which can be 'ordered on request'.

It's now too late to get from anywhere else in time so I have to hope it will arrive with them in time to be sent to me.

This sort of thing really boils my fosters.

IT IS NOT 'IN STOCK' IF YOU HAVE TO ORDER IT FOR THE CUSTOMER!!

THE FACT YOU CAN GET IT SUPPOSEDLY WITHIN A DAY DOES NOT MAKE IT 'IN STOCK'.

IT IS DEFINITELY NOT IN STOCK IF THE SHIPMENT IS DELAYED FROM YOUR SUPPLIER!!!

    😡

I have no problem with retailers not holding stock and ordering on request. In fact, it seems sensible to me. But saying you are in possession of an item when you are not I find really annoying. It seems to be very much particular to the music industry, too.

    And breathe....

Completely agree - same thing happened to me. I was going with that company even though they weren't the cheapest, I needed the items ASAP. Very frustrating!

Probably because unless you have a true bypass bass the existing pots and tone controls already colour the output -  does a Sadowsky pedal make your Fenderesque Jazz bass really sound like a Sadowsky ? just thinking, I've never tried the Sadowsky pedal, but I have the Alien one and whilst it's a useful boost it is a bit too subtle and doesn't do anything to my ear that the zoom B3 couldn't do and the B3 can do so much more

I have multiple basses with Sadowsky preamps (including one Sadowsky!) as well as the pedal and can confirm that, while there are small sonic differences, the Sad pedal really does give your passive bass a Sadowsky vibe. Probably to do with the specific freq boosts, but it just breathes new life into my vintage Fenders!

Do you have any idea about how many people constitute "a few people" and a ball-park price?

Initially 5, then revised down to 2-3. This was two years ago (so costs may have gone up) but he quoted around £1180 (that was sunburst which is a little extra).

  7. I spoke to Mark at Limelight about commissioning a Sting-style reliced 50s bass. Because it would require more unusual parts he said it would be easier if a few people wanted to order. We talked prices, and he seems up for doing it. I've been using a Limelight '66' P/J that he made me a few years ago and still love it!
