That’s a wonderfully simple take on the classic B Bender which seems to necessitate hollowing out the whole guitar. Nice score, now get those Clarence White licks practiced 😎

Funny, I've always found Fender flats to be very high tension and inflexible, and thought La Bellas were the opposite

    weird isnt it.

Thinking about it, my p bass is detuned half a step, maybe I should return to pitch and see how it feels.

Same strings on basses with identical scale lengths should be no different in tension.

Could it be strap length/bass height/wrist angle related hence putting your fingers at a different angle?

Labellas on the hofner and fender flats on the mustang

The much tighter string spacing on the Hofner leads to a very different technique than on a Mustang.

Agreed but when I play with my thumb (like Sting) the La Bellas really do dig in more. I play both basses very similarly. The tension on the Mustang flats is a lot less but when I play the same string on one of my P bass, again no problem.

I have my hofner tuned half a step down for this weekends gig, but still I feel it's going to be a bit sore

  5. Probably been asked before but my Hofner violin bass wears La Bella deep talking flats .50 to .100 gauge

When I play with my fingers, it makes them sore, yet my Fender flats on my JMJ and one of my P basses don't get this reaction.

Why does it happen and if I put La Bellas on my JMJ will I have the same problem

    TIA

  6. DON'T SELL THE '71

you'll regret it mate. Just keep playing it.

I recently bought a Harley Benton PB-50. After a set up and rolling the fingerboard edges (I did this myself) it is a superb bass and cost £104.00. Great for dragging about when you dont want to use something expensive.

I use it in my Police tribute band but I will also be using for a normal pub gig this weekend

Can the Hammers Logo be removed?

no, it's painted I think, then laquered . I had one, lovely lovely bass, just too heavy for me and someone did say to me about drunk idiots that hate West Ham, would they start on you at a gig?

I didn';t have any trouble at the 3 gigs I used it at.

It's was too dang heavy and had to go

I fitted dowels to the Mk1 templates sent out to BC members, stopped after discovering nobody was using routers 😅

Dead easy to make, shape your template and position it on the rear of the peghead. Then it's just a dot of glue end of the dowel before dropping through the tuning peg hole.

    imageproxy.jpg.422f7ae45bdbf493763f0dbfb44f1b2b.jpg

what did you make the template out of?

  9. I use 3 different A&H desks, all analogue.

I have a really good set up on one of the desks and we sometimes vary the delay length, using the 'tap' button, it gets the delay in time with the song

I started with a preset and then fiddled with the available parameters.

I really like how my most used desk sounds and need to see what I've done and copy it to the other desks.

If I was to go digital, I would probably try and set it up similar to my main desk. I don't seem to hear any need to change anything from venue to venue but with the digital desk you could probably set each singer up with what they want to hear, in the monitors or not. With my A&H desks it's everyone gets the FX or no one.

Is there a DXF of the headstock floating about (I can buy one off electric herald)? Only I have a laser cutter and waterjet at work so could do a nice template to bolt through the machine head holes and route with a bearing follower.

@BillBdid you ever manage to make the template?

I'm a bit of a Variax fanboi, I've got a 300, a 700 acoustic, 705 bass, JTV59, and now the JTV69. It'll get an outing tomorrow night at an open mic (where there's one other JTV59 and four other 700 acoustics).

crikey, that's a lot of ' a lot of different guitars'

I haven't used mine for some years now but I keep it for the next time I'm going to need a mulitude of guitars for one gig.

I get that, before my short-scale days I`d have quite liked the Sting Precision but, well it`s got Stings name on it. He`s a fantastic musician but, well just but.......

I had one of those too actually. It was bl00dy nice. Massive neck and it really purred. It was ash bodied (strange as Sting's 57 is alder) and had a really smooth sound.

    I wish I'd kept it

I can highly recommend the small "premium quality" 3/8" post bass machines. Lightweight and an utter bargain, they are really very high quality kit.  Retrovibes weigh 59g each.  Not a direct comparison but I just weighed the 1/2" Hipshot USA Ultralights with clover key in my possesion - 55g each.

ooh nice. I was thinking about changing the tuners on my HB PB-50. They feel like they might break, they hold tune well enough but feel cheap.

    I must measure the holes

  14. I have the JTV59, les paul shaped one. A great gigging tool when I needed all those different sounds and the acoustic sounds.

It made one less guitar on the smaller gigs. I got a power supply A/B TRS box, which meant I never needed to charge the battery.

Nicely made too. Good score TZ

Not everybody likes big hollow bodied basses. The buyer might well change his/her mind.

It’s worth holding out for the 5123 because of the TV Jones pickups.

agreed, it's also medium scale, I think long scale would be too much for me now, especially with a larger hollow body too

They’re about , but it’s been some years since they were available.
I was quite amazed to see three pop up when I went looking.

yes the one i bid on went for £735. Quite a good price I think. I', sure another will come along

The neck is not that thick , comfortable , the body is large and does take some getting used to if you’re just accustomed to Fender style basses. It has a wonderful woody thump. The bridge is set about a third of the way into the body so it doesn’t feel like a shortscale. F is a good reach. It’s a true hollow body , does not have a center block , and is not heavy.
So it’s got character , I love the sound , and enjoy playing it a lot. I’ve played some other large bodied hollow basses before so I knew exactly what I was getting into.

After I showed a picture of the bass to Herself , and she said “get it” I started the search. And immediately found three for sale. I was quite surprised. Now I’m in Nova Scotia and this run was never sold in Canada , two were in California , one was close to Boston and had a hard shell case. I made an offer on the one in Boston and received it days later.
After exchange , shipping and duties it was a bit more than I expected , I was also dinged with a brokerage fee. And despite all that , am very glad I got it.
So there was a run for sale in some UK stores and more through Thomann , there will be some popping up for sale every now and then. And some will find the large body too cumbersome. These were Korean made , so the price was reasonable , they have the expensive pickups.
They were a good deal !

With a little digging you might well find one for a reasonable price.

Thanks for the info, I will have a dig about for one and see what happens.
