Did music lessons at school help with your musical life?
police squad replied to Nail Soup's topic in General Discussion
I dont remember the music lessons at school really teaching us anything about music but I did learn the violin from the age of 6 till nearly 13. I was quite lazy with it and didnt learn the scales very quickly but then aftyer about 5 years, I really got into it. Passed my grade 3 and then took up the bass. Changed schools and the music lessons (only for one year, till o-levels took over, they didnt do the music o level) were better. We started singing basic harmonies and studied a bit of opera (quite interesting to me anyway) But the more bass and gutar I played, the more I remembered of my basic music theory, Flattened thirds for minor, Minor 7ths. My wife is learning piano, grade 5 now, and we talk theory a lot. She's very good with her theory and can tell me the notes in certain scales, whereas I have to think about how I would play that scale on a guitar, then call out the notes. My violin sight reading was more like tab. I learned the the 'a' note on the stave, was an open 'a' on the violin and the that next like on the stave was the first finger on the a string. I didn't think about it being a 'b' (natural or flat) and depending on the key, the next note would have a gap on the fingerboard and it was C#. C natural would have had my second finger right next to my first. I'm very pleased to have the amount of theory that I have, it really does help -
useless. I want a white, fretless sabre from 1980 😢

it was great fun and I realised what an influence he has been on my playing, many of my fills sound like his I was listening to the Jam this morning, seeing what I can remember. Great band -
It's A Dep's Life - Share Your Stories
police squad replied to stewblack's topic in General Discussion
I once turned up to see one of my favourite local bands (whom I have depped with on bass a few times) and the guitarist was taken ill. They couldn't get their regular guitarist dep, so I did it. The singer couldn't believe it, that I knew all the songs on guitar. This was 30 years ago now, I eventually joined them full time, 10 years later. The worst dep I did, I thought I could wing it. Quite an eclectic set but I am very good at busking, unfortunately the guitarist/singer was pretty rubbish and the songs I knew he played badly, so it was a bit of a car crash. I should have put more work in. Best dep was for a Jam tribute called Total Jam. Mates of mine but I had 2 weeks to learn 30 odd jam songs, some of which I had never heard. I really worked my butt off for this one and delivered really well. I learnt some great Jam tunes as well and even sang David Watts (as Bruce does). I've depped with them a few times since -

I have an ongoing back condition and have gigged propped up on a bar stool. It works very well and is surprisingly comfortable. Some people even ask how my back is, when I see them outside of the gig Do what you have to, to keep playing, I don't think anyone is really that bothered Axl and Dave Grohl have gigged sitting down haven't they -
I'll try the pyramids/hofner then I think

I did a gig a couple of weeks ago and they only had enough 'cash' in the till to pay us. The doorman only got half his fee but they promised to make it good te following day. Landlady wasn't about (unusually, this is a well run place) and they couldnt get in the safe. They were moaning that people just mainly use cards these days and not cash. I can see a time where we may have to start taking credit card payments via these iZettle terminals etc, which measn the money will be tracked and prices will go up because of having to pay tax on it (not bothered as I declare my gig earnings anyway)

do they only come in one gauge? How do tey feel tension wise. The la bellas I have are stiff but they take detuning a semi tone really well

Trace Elliot BLX-80. Usually with my JMJ Mustang, if I'm learning stuff.

Cool, I shall try a set of the hofner strings then. The C/T is slightly bigger isnt it Yes i have a nice thin neck on mine and as you say, edges nicely rolled too. I have no side dots, which I think is normal for 64, might use a sharpy

WHARFEDALE PRO DELTA AX-12 (Opinions Please)
police squad replied to thebrig's topic in PA set up and use
I use the EVP powered stuff from about 2009 for a couple of years, they sounded fine and weren't expensive but they were quite heavy. Mine were 1x15 plus horns and I added the 1x15 subs too. But the weight did for me and I went QSC -
ah yes, I can see that now. I've managed to unseize my pot but I know it's wired wrong, so my next job is to have a look at that I'm getting sound but have no volume control from either pot atm. It may be because I know the seized one is wired wrong. I'm no good with electrics but I have a couple of chaps at work that are very good, I'll show it to them. Do you gig yours then? I'm planning to gig mine and what strings do you use. My CT has Labella deep talking flats, fairly high tension and work well detuned half a step (most of my dep gigs are detuned half a step) and stupidly I moved on a spare set that I had unopened

Wireless system - Lekato, Boss or something else?
police squad replied to ots's topic in General Discussion
we all know IEM is a no brainer, bass guitar also sounds much nicer too. Good luck with it, bass is great. Let us know how the ws90 performs -
Wireless system - Lekato, Boss or something else?

I do 2x1 hour sets with a 20-30 minute break and havent had any problems with it dying. I stick it on charge when I get home and it's ready to rock I also only use it to stop treading on cables, as a duo we play in some tiny places, so IEM, guitar and mic are all wireless now -

the 90 has longer battery life, according to the blurb 5.6 ms latency as opposed to <6ms. range is 30 meters compared with 100 meters of the 50. I havent even gone into the next room, so no idea on that -

I've been using the WS50 since last year and have had no problems with it. No latency issue or dropout. I'm not very far from the receiver, it's on the floor plugged into my multifx. It was less than 50 quid and I have done about 50 gigs with it now -
Yes I still have my PF500. I used it for 7 to 8 years and it was fabulous. I now use the Ashdown RM500 evoII. It is also fabulous. I keep the ampeg as a spare but as I'm more and more thinking of going straight into the desk via a preamp pedal, I'm not sure I need all this gear!! wow, I've just looked at the new price for a PF500 £599 from PMT (also £448 from giggear). Mine was £314 new 12 years ago
