1. Hello Basschat, and this particular sub-forum. It's been forever since I've logged in here, honestly I forgot my password but today just chanced my arm at a long-unused one and hey presto the door opened! In 2012 I released my debut EP 'Can't Sleep in Silence'... so it's been a damn long time coming, but I am thrilled to share my brand new album 'NL1' here! You can check it out at: Spotify Apple Music Amazon (It's also available at every other digital platform you can think of, I just thought I'd include the most common ones). As scary as it is posting it here, I'm really looking forward to hear what you think of it. It's practically 100% self-made; the only thing I didn't do myself was the mastering, which I left to the legend Christopher Bolte. If you fancied a taster before diving into the whole album, here's the video I made for the opening track, 'Rise & Shine'. If you like cats you'll at least enjoy the video. Thanks for your time, folks. Have a good one. -Nicko
2.
Music is an intellectual and sentimental endeavor. We go through different periods as musicians. Have patience and determination! And be honest with yourself.
This pretty much covers it!!
3. Haha that sucks!! I once cracked half a tooth out on a MM SUB Stingray... it wasn't a bass limiting injury... but boy was it stupid. All I was doing was putting it on to play it and it decided it wanted to make out with me! Ow.
4. I've had a Boss TU3 for ages and it's never once annoyed me...
5. Haha what a cool thread! The MySpace page of my first ever band still exists... Click this. Haha! That was so long ago. 2006ish! Wow. And this is a play-along with of one of the songs from my EP, released in June of 2012. This video is from August though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi3GrrhvgCo Enjoy!
6. Mine is here! I don't post on there that much but... yeah. There it is!
7. My general opinion on effects is pretty simple. If it fits the music, cool! If it actually adds another level to the sound that makes it more interesting, great! Use them! If a person is just using effects because they're available, and they just sound silly and don't add anything... Not so much. Of course it's all down to opinion though. My opinion of whether something sounds necessary could and probably would be different to other people. Like I said though, ^that's my own general rule on the subject!
8. I tend not to force it.. sometimes we just get bad days. Sometimes bad weeks! Being English, a cup of tea often solves the problem. But if it doesn't, I just put my bass down and walk away for a while. Just doing something else. Relaxing, watching videos on YouTube, anything really. Oh. Apart from bass videos. Don't watch bass videos after you've had a bad day's/week's playing or you'll never want to pick it up again. I've had that before... Damn you Victorrrrr!! But yeah, in general, I just say "don't sweat it". Go do something else for a while and the wall will fall over. Silly wall. You weren't even there in the first place. THE POWER WAS INSIDE US ALL ALONG!!!!!!! *inspirational music*
9. I had a Levin imitation P-Bass... I think I was about 14 at the time. When I was in the shop playing it, the amp room was being used so I was just playing it unplugged. It felt nice! And I thought "oh it'll just sound like a P-Bass! Cool!" So I bought it and took it home. I bought it with my birthday money that year actually. I took it out of the gig bag I got with it and plugged it into my amp... I played it and... oh god. It sounded like a toy. Awful. Not only that but if you gave it even the slightest of welly, it popped like crazy. Just an awful, awful instrument. Oh I also remember it being absurdly top-heavy. It was hard work holding the thing up while you played it! (That's what she said...) The only thing I could say about it that's positive is that it didn't feel bad when it was unplugged. So I guess it would have been okay to warm up on? Or good for a beginner to get used to what a neck feels like... But the moment it's plugged in, I think the beginner would quit! I took it back to the shop two days later. Hahaha.
10. I feel extremely silly posting an entirely new thread to try to get my EP reviewed... when this thread was here the whole time. Sorry about that! I did say in my stupid thread that I haven't really got to grips with forums yet. Haha. Anyhoo, I'd love to hear what you guys think about my EP 'Can't Sleep In Silence'. You can listen to it for free here on Routenote. Just thought I'd add; I'm working on a full album at the moment that I'm hoping will be out in the autumn! Boo-yah! Okay, thanks a lot! EDIT: Just seen the whole rule about reviewing the previous post first! Oops. So I listened to Cherry White. Pretty well written songs, your singer has an interesting voice! And I'm not saying that as a casual way of saying that it's rubbish... cos it's not. I genuinely mean she has an interesting voice. Haha! My favourite song was probably 'The Price'. I found her voice to suit the more stripped-back sound a little better. 'Superman' was cool too. I liked the groove in that one! I also liked the start of 'Empty City'. I like it when everything comes in all at once. That's what she said. My criticisms would be that the EP as a whole doesn't sound super-well mixed. It's decent though!! It's more like a very very good demo. I hope you're proud of it. *Moments later* AH! I just realised, your singer's voice reminds me of a less wobbly Gwen Stefani! I imagine she gets that a lot?
11. Right now I'm listening to the 'All Roads Lead Here' EP by Chimp Spanner.
12. 'Oh What A Night' by The Four Seasons always goes down a treat.. Also it's a fun song to play cos it has that tasty run in the bridge!! I'm kinda lucky though cos the band I play in also does 'Never Too Much' by Luther Vandross... Back to the question though... 'Brown Eyed Girl', 'Town Called Malice', 'I Got You (I Feel Good)'. All the hits!
13. Hi everyone. I know it's been a while since I posted here... I feel pretty bad about it, actually. I need to train myself and get to grips with how to use forums!! I'm pretty useless at them, to be honest! Just let it be known that it's not my intention to abandon the forum, be rude, or anything!! Okay. Now I've gotten that off my chest, I was wondering if some of you could help. I'm excited to announce that I'm going to start performing live relatively soon! I am hoping to within the next two or three months. With that in mind, I'm wanting to create a little bit of hype. Not like intense hype or anything silly, just... it'd be nice if some people actually came to my shows, you know? Now. I released my debut EP, 'Can't Sleep In Silence' in June of 2012. It's available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and Routenote Direct. I am looking for people to review it. I'd really, really appreciate the help. Of course I wouldn't want you to pay for my EP if you're doing me the honour of reviewing it! You can listen to it for free on the Routenote page. CLICK HERE for that. Also it's free on Spotify, of course. But yeah. No ads on the Routenote page! Oh yeaaahhhhhh. If you don't want to review it, could you help me out with some contacts? If you know people who run review blogs on Tumblr, or on the internet in general, please pass their email addresses onto me! That'd be awesome. Just to reiterate, I'm going to try my best to post here more. I don't care how long it takes to get my head around how forums work!! Haha. I still haven't forgotten the support you guys gave me when you helped me win the Sandberg Guitars contest on YouTube. Still so very thankful for that. Have a great day/night/whenever you read this! Alright. Nick EDIT: If you write a review, post the link as a reply to this, tweet me (here) or post it to my Facebook wall (here). Thanks!
14. Thanks for the advice everyone! The kind of thing I'm looking for is just a general compressor that I'd keep on at all times, subtly making the volumes of things quieter/louder where appropriate. I'm not looking for any creative effect from it or whatever. :] But yeah thanks for the advice! You've all given me a lot to think about.. Gonna get down to my local music shop and try some of them out! (If they have them that is).
15. Hi everyone. I'm looking to get myself a compression pedal for a more even sound live.. I'm sure some of you out there use compression pedals and if you have any advice for me, any suggestions of which pedals to look at and possibly end up going for, I'd be very grateful! Thanks a lot. :]
16. I'll be posting a picture of my prototype MarloweDK Signature bass here when I get it! Je suis excited...
17. I've heard Beth Houghton and The Hooves Of Destiny on the radio a tonne of times and really enjoyed the songs.. but I was super disappointed with the live sound & performance. It was just nowhere near as good. Truly disappointed! Plus, I found there was such an air of "trying to be so different" in their performance that they ended up just looking a bit silly really. That's just my taste of course...
18.
No problem! Just copy the URL from YouTube and paste it in the post! Deceptively simple... ...and well done again. mate! Pics of that prize bass please, or it didn't happen!
Oh! Well now I feel even more dumb. xD Thanks again!
19. Thanks for posting that Discreet, see what I mean about me being a noob? I don't know how to embed videos.. xD
20.
HAHAHAHA! That is REALLY good! Thumbs up! I can't stand that little expressionless tap you do, it has no musical reason for existing. But everything else is very well played. You are going to be one hell of a bassist if you keep that up.
Thanks for the kind words and criticism! I don't really know how you can think the little tap has no musical reason for existing.. it's part of the melody! Thanks all the same though.
