2. Hay Warwick, welcome to the forum! I won't lie I love Warwick's, I did own a thumb NT which was gorgeous, I'd hankered after one for years, an finally got one from the States, sadly I sold all my basses to go to guitar building college but the thumb was the last to go, was lovely to play. I love the Streamers too. I really did not know that about Warwick and Framus, that was really quite interesting and I love tit bits of info like that, thanks, it reminds me of the Dan, Kent, Arron Armstrong thing, I love it when things get passed down and would love nothing more for my daughter to take over making from me, although she's more interested in barbie at the mo, lol. Anyways welcome. As far as the other stuff goes i'm not well enough informed to comment so I wont, all I can say is I miss John Entwhistle and his playing, man Im proud to have such great and awesome players come from ole blighty!
3. oh and a deffo to the out building, this isn't something you can do on your kitchen table. and a massive deffo to the working safely!!!!! a sharp chisel can take a huge lump out of a finger, a table saw......well mine took 3 of my fingers off, 2 sowed sort of back on an a whole heap of hospital an pain for a hand that can't really play bass any more! SAFTY SAFTY SAFTY!!
4. Hello Doomentia, if you really fancy going it then go for it! its fun and you'll always love playing it! and you will be surprised at how good they can sound! but.................yes theres always a but! lol I don't know what your wood working skills are like but if there not that good forget it! you most certainly can learn as you go but you'll be throwing wood away at an alarming rate, or end up with an unplayable piece of crap! your going to have to know how to use planes and chisels well and know how to keep them razor sharp! your going to have to be able to plane a peice of wood, flat, square an of an even thickness down to 0.1 of a mm. you can build a bass with just hand tools, machines do help and save time but apart from maybe a router (truss rod grove, pick up holes, neck pocket) everything can be done by hand but you do need good hand skills. I went to 'totnes school of guitar making' around 8 years ago and im sure it hasn't changed, the tools provided where minimal (hand only) the guidance wasn't! and that really helped! read as many books on it as you can and do your research. when your doing it, don't be afraid to ask lots of questions on here. you will need some specialist tools though an you can't do without those. I'll be happy to list those if you fancy going ahead with it, they shouldn't cost too much, under a £100 maybe. also think about whether you want a thru-neck or bolt on, active or passive, painted of fancy wood, you can make a bass from anything like a couple of hundred quid to a grand, just for materials. If you have the hand skills then go for it, its not easy, but its doable, and it is very satisfying. most of all do lots of research, a full size drawing an take your time! ps, hipshot do a good whammy for basses, never used one so can say what there like, but they aren't cheap!
5. Hay Bassickman, there are so many to choose from, from your off the shelf type stuff too handmade in stock ones to the totally custom and all with there pros an cons and of course the varying price tags, I recon if you want a good answer that will point you in the right direction then start with your min-max price, sort out whats good and you fancy in that range then post them all up and wait for responses from owners, only my opinion but there a wealth of experience an info in the good people on here but I recon you got to narrow it down a tad. happy hunting I hope you find your dream bass!! Oh and I make you right, I had a american fender 5 deluxe and it sucked!!!
6. Hay Emanew, so sorry I just noticed I hadn't replied to your post! thank you, again he site needs work but have a look around please, and if you want have a look on here too http://www.facebook.com/ruachcustombass.guitars thanks again, happy plucking!
7. Hay Clarke, thank you for your welcome it good to be here! Im loving the site, and the people!! Bassstactor, oh I love the bass!!!! to me its the greatest sound an instrument can make an more versatile than anything else, its pure heaven! lmao!! I cant take the credit for that but hell yh, there never a need to cut the bass! ever! lol, sorry did some one say turn down? I couldn't hear you over the sound of my bass awesomeness! lol Hello SpaceChick, really, thank you so much!! and thank you, I have been made to feel very welcome, and thats lovely! Hay Deb, well assaid the web site is poor at the mo, will be updated asap (money! ) but have a look on here - http://www.facebook.com/ruachcustombass.guitars theres more pics, and of course theres the pics in the 'affiliates and deals' section thank you every body! happy slapping!!
8. Hay yepmop, thanks for your welcome Thank you very much! The web site is in serious need of an update, which should be happening sometime soon. I have some pics of a new build in the 'affiliates' forum and some stuff on Facebook, if you fancy a look. it would make a cracking fretboard, Ebony comes in at 915-1120 kg/cu.m depending on species and Pink Ivory comes in at 990-1060 kg/cu.m, so it not far off it weight an density but not quite as hard as a really good Ebony, but its hard, an a dam site hard than a lot of stuff used for fretboards! lol, still its not as brittle an more stable than Ebony.
9. Hello TheGreek, sadly the web site woefully un-finished!! there is a clickable link to some pics, but thats one of the things im changing when it gets updated soon, they'll be a page of wood pics, and where an what they can be used for, its a bit messy at the mo, but thank you for your suggestion, if you have any more please pass them on as it really help me get it right as to what I need before I update it! pink Ivory is lovely, rarely do you find it big enough for a facing but I have seen it, its very hard, dense and heavy and finishes lovely, I would say it's sounds a bit like ebony but brighter. heres some finger boards, was described as rarer than diamonds, lol
10. Hay Nick, Many thanks for the reply, that sounds great, i'll be working away for a few weeks but i'll be in touch as soon as I get back! Thanks again!! heath
11. Hello, yh I re-posted on affiliate's, which I think is the right place so if any wants to take a gander its on there, i'll post new stuff in the same post so I don't have lots of different posts as that would seem wrong. thanks veletkevorkian, means a lot! thats a good idea Neepheid I should ask if I sell one if they come here an if not encourage them to pop in.
12. I didnt know we was going to be spell checked I can't spell for s**t, im quite disl.....dyslie...dyslectic, an yes I spell checked that! lol. It was quite rude but was deffo funny! I've been on both ends, an to be honest I feel for the sounds guys!
13.
Jack Bruce at a Sunday evening pub gig out in the Suffolk sticks. Brown trouser time as we were a typical '60s blues band.
that must of been a nightmare!
14. Hello Mr Moderator, I'm very new here an only posted a few bits, (a few to do with me an my) but would it possible to add me to the list? many many thanks!! oh and thanks for such an awesome site!
15. did a gig where Ronny Scott an Doctor & the medics was in the crowd, they was playing latter that night, it was my first gig in years, in honesty I sucked! lol then a couple of years latter did a gig (wedding) where the guitarist out of Tom Robinson band was there, he waited till we did a song he must of know really well, walked up on stage half way through the song, lent over our guitarist shoulder (a brave thing to do, we dont call him meaty for nothing, lol) then with his left hand only, played the whole solo spot on, in time, note perfect, came in an went out without missing a beat, done the solo went back to his seat an carried on drinking beer as if nothing happened, it was class, lol, we finished the song laughing our heads off!
16.
Does Brian Johnson of AC/DC count? Unbelievably, he actually wanted to sing with us in the second set! He knew our singer was having a hard time with a throat infection and as we were playing typical pub blues stuff Brian knew the material... He was too polite to ask and we were too gobsmacked to suggest it! A lovely guy who always gets together with his family for a meal when he is back home, which is how he happened to be in the pub we were playing as it is round the corner from the Indian restaurant where he had just eaten! The night I nearly backed Brian Johnson...
THAT IS AWESOME!!!!!
17. lmao!! yes there is quite a few Scottish in corby! I've never seen so much iron-bru till I moved here, lol Hay Mike, thanks mate, I'll give it a look! thank you very much!! your too kind! hope your having a good week!

19. hello, to all in bass chat land, I did post this in the build diary but now I seen this forum so the other might not of been the right place? so I'll go here to just incase! lol I very new here so I thought i'd introduce myself to you all, an say what a wonderful place this seems to be, I'm sad to say I have only just discovered it, on recommendation from one of your own, love the fact that it has so many dedicated forums so you don't have to go through lots of stuff to get to where you want, an on top of that every one seems very nice an very knowledgeable! wish I'd found it earlier! Hopefully time permitting I'll be popping in quite a bit! my name is Heath, i'm 46, live in corby, northants an run 'Ruach Custom Bass Guitars' (pronounced : roo-aak) I would like to every now an then post up a pic or two of builds going through the workshop, if thats ok? It seems a good place to show what i'm doing an to get feed back, good or bad always nice to get a handle on what people like or current trends. I started building basses after I left "totnes school of guitar making" around 7-8 years a go, I am a carpenter, joiner and cabinet maker by trade an love working with wood, I've been playing for around 27 years (crap, you think I'd be good by now, lol) and I guess the two had to join one day, so my love of bass and my love of wood has turned into a passion of building, and it is a passion! after 7 odd years I still get excited when I get the first bit of wood an make that first cut, the thrill of the build, the satisfaction at the end an the joy of hearing it play! I never want to just be putting out basses that look, sound an feel the same, I truly hope to push myself in my building till I stop building an hope that every build an with every customer I learn something new! I do believe you never stop learning, and I like to try something new each time! I believe building is a journey of innovation, education and dedication! I have a web site which is woefully out of date an I shall be updating that in the next few months. so if no one tells me to bugger off i'll post a couple of pics in the build diary tonight. Thanks for listening to my ramblings. have a great day and be cool to all you happy slappers, finger thumpers an party pickers! Heath
20. Lmao!! awesome! and way to true! lol, just great! Love the fact it was Henry Rollins that wrote it, lol, you really wouldn't want to mess with him anyway! lol

22. In fairness Spector have never claimed to be handmade and they certainly are not in any way, but they are fine high end instruments never the less. the only question to ask is do they deserve the high price tag that they get when you can have a true handmade bass for around the same or cheaper? but they sell so I recon the consumer has spoken! lol ok i take that back, they do claim to be handmade, doh! lol
23. I build basses and I recon if I have two on the go (allowing glue to dry on one while the other is worked) then I can pretty much fill up my day, an two basses takes on average 2 weeks, I would say with no hesitation that a standard bass will take onwards of 40 hours without any finish on it, a high gloss finish would take at least 12 combined hours over 5 days, this is for a a bass with not to many crazy things going on. so 12 hours has to involve a fair bit of machinery, rendering it not hand made at all! but 30 hours without finish seems not to crazy. I like to do as much as possible by hand only using machines to do the heavy work where hand working would be time consuming for no good reason. (band sawing the body, routing the truss rod, type thing) It can take me up to 8 hours to carve a body and 4-5 hours at least to carve a full neck (thru neck) with volute and body join (theres my 12 hours gone, lol) but then I do like the customer there at the time for the neck carving, a perfect neck is only perfect to the person buying the bass an that can make or break a bass. take into account that a bass for a small builder including trade discounts will cost upward of £800-£900 then a price tag of £2000 isn't too crazy, taking into account your workshop has to be paid for, bills, working when you get home to sort out orders, (maybe even staff) and selling 40-50 basses a year at £2000 a pop will make you vat registered, meaning you have to lose 20% of that to the tax man, course you will claim back your vat for materials (more work) and of course you could end up in the upper tax band paying 40% tax! if i'm honest its not a profession you get into to be rich, its a passion, a time an soul consuming passion!! watched the videos and he seems a really nice bloke an his basses are lovely!
