1. Should have gone to Florence and brought back some Chianti instead.
2. Same here, late last night/early this morning - only the home page was accessible. When I clicked on any forum the holding page would appear. If that's saved us from another attack, that's a clever system, and it has the added benefit of letting us [s]addicts[/s] users know that something may not be right with the server and it's not our browser's fault.
3. Welcome to Basschat! Not sure how to call you - if you're female it's a bit strange to call you Bernard I think that gear helps your appreciation and performance of music, rather than being an end to itself, but nice equipment is admittedly very sexy!
4.
Depending on where you move to BJ you could get a bigger place, a DB and some loose change left
Well, I would need to stay in the area, I just couldn't leave the BC Chiswick posse at this stage, could I?
5. Ooooooooo handbags at dawn I want a DB too, but I need to move to a bigger place first, which means a DB would end up costing me around £500,000*, give or take a few thousand... Edit: London W4 price of a not-too-upmarket, reasonably large flat.
6. This is a hugely interesting thread. Thanks for starting it, Lewk. I doubt i'll ever be involved myself, but you guys are making sense of quite a few memories I have of events and situations. Edited - apologies for misspelling, Lewk!
7. Welcome, Mandy! You've come to the right place
8. Heh. On my double-bass-like upright I've had the A string buzz (it was the tuning peg's wings, as mentioned!), the need to mute the strings below the bridge because they seem to love echoing the notes I play (sigh!), and the mysterious buzz-when-you-fret-a-C (3rd fret on the A string). I want to believe that the latter is just me fretting ineptly, but I'm still investigating... All very intriguing. I so wish I could find the space for a real DB at home.
9.
inevitably suffer from runaway scrotal adhesion.
Ah, so there is one advantage to being a female bass player then - nothing of the sort can happen to me
10. No prob guys! Took me a few seconds to realise that Garey's original link was in German - despite my knowledge of German being basic at best. The page just looked familiar and full of words I knew... that's the miracle of music
11. I feel like I still have an awful lot to learn on here, and I don't mean regarding scales, modes or playing techniques
12. Here you are http://basscamp.gitarrebass.de/index_e.html
13. Welcome to the forum, from the equally low end on this side, Dingo! (A big, fat, thundering, low B!)
14. NS seem to recommend using their special set of 5, I guess not just because they are of the correct length and gauge, but also because - at least on my NXT 5 - the low B and the E are slightly different, and feel a bit rougher than the others (I think they may be groundwounds as opposed to flatwounds). That way, their sound is slightly brighter and creates fewer problems with the low frequencies when amplified. However, NS also says that it's perfectly possible to use "real" double bass strings, and that stringing through the body shouldn't make any difference (I haven't tried it, though). Assuming that a set of 5 double bass strings can be found, I imagine that would be the only way to obtain a good double-bass-like sound - I find that the current setup makes my bass sound electric despite me tweaking the pots and switches in any way possible.
15. Aw, welcome Marcus! xxx Warwicks - oh yes. One day I'll get a real-McCoy Corvette fretless 5. One day.
16. Only thing that doesn't convince me is the 15 minutes slot... seems a bit short. In any case, if I can find out more info the next time I - alone or with you, if you like, Jack - go there, I'll post updates.
17. Not sure exactly where such a topic should reside, so Mods, please feel free to move it where appropriate. I've shared this on my FB page, and thought I might do the same here. If you play "relaxed" original music and would like some exposure at the Mastercard Lates at the Natural History Museum, check this out. I'm not involved with the NHM in any way other than as a regular visitor to the Mastercard Lates. I have found myself mesmerised by the resident band(s) of the night several times in the past - making a move to leave and just stopping to listen for a moment, and then promptly forgetting about anything else and staying on. 18. I love 5-stringers and could not play without one. In general: 1 - you really need to get used to that bottom string being a B, not and E, and that third fret being a D, not a G (easily done with some practice, but it does take a little time to readjust when you swap basses with a 4). 2 - a 5 will tend to sound different, usually deeper, than a 4, even when playing the same note on the same string and fret on the two basses. 3 - the neck is obviously wider, and you do have to get used to moving your hand and fingers around a little more. One of the reasons why I love my fretless 5 is that it allows me to jump around the fingerboard with less effort than a fretted. 4 - to do justice to a 5, you need a good amp (although I manage all right with my 20W Peavey, then again, I don't play live). Do take the plunge and enjoy!
19. Oh my god, it was a fantastic night made sweeter by the result of that match Thank you guys, as always. I've taken around a bilion photos, some of which will end up on the band's website and FB page eventually, after a ruthless selection process Hope you got home all right, Si.
20. Welcome Mark! I guess you can say you don't live in a house, you live in a music store - and this is the right place to be for gearheads, bassheads, musician's musicians and lovely people in general, so get stuck in
21. I may try to come along too, late work permitting, if I can find a reasonable way of getting back to W4 by tube after the gig. I've pencilled it in.
22. Will the gig also be a birthday celebration, Si? (IIRC) What's the exact date? Edit: LOL, checked your profile, well, you look waay younger than your stated age, what's your secret?? Jokes apart, I'll bring a card!
