1. Nothing out that I can think of but in.... Yamaha Silent Bass EUB 1999 Yamaha TRB 6 II Warwick LWA 1000 head Hall of Fame reverb And at the last minute... Funk Fingers :-)
2. Here's a silly idea I had last year :-) http://youtu.be/K_oBtvzX8gQ
3. Yamaha were there two years ago ( and led to me coming away with a TRB1006) but a lot of manufacturers were missing last year. Not to bang on about the £5 thing, but I am sceptical that it's been introduced based on complaints received several years ago, and isn't connected to the Guitar Show introducing the same idea this year. If it helps to keep the price down for people that only want to see the gear then it makes sense ( and it isn't mandatory) but I'm not sure the reason given is entirely accurate.
4.
Well they have been asked politely to desist in the past and this has been studiously ignored (maybe they couldn't hear the request) so more 'firm' measures need to be taken
Ha ha, although there was a bomb sniffing dog at the guitar show which was a bit unnerving.
5. Thinking about it, this would be a good year to enforce it as the loudest moment of all the shows has to be 10 mins after Mark King played when every stand seemed to have at least one person trying to recreate what they had just seen :-)
6. Enforcing the quiet times would be great. Dunlop have had headphones available for trying pedals the last couple of times which is great for keeping you from interfering with others but didn't help block out the slap assault from the amp stand opposite :-)
7. Yeah, I thought the atmosphere was definitely different this year and I think the reduction in trade stands was a big part of that. Still great fun, and my tickets are already booked for next year, but would be great to see it full again.
8. Tony Levin would be great. Neil Murray again has been there before so as a regular I'd love an all new line up ( well expect for Mr King obviously). I hope the trader stands are back to full compliment in 2015, the hall felt very odd with all that space this year, hopefully just a blip due to the Birmingham guitar show bring on the same dates.
9. The one thing to really watch (I found anyway) as a newbie bower on EUB is the dramatic increase in volume. You might want to keep a volume pedal handy until you're used to it. I bowed a lot on my NS Wav and it worked fine, I've just got a Yamaha Silent Bass and the tone is even better although takes some work as I'm not used to "real" double bass strings :-)
10. Andy Irvine performed either this year or last year :-)
11. It'll be fun whoever is there, my main request would be to not do the "£5 guaranteed seat" tickets that were used at the guitar show. Have there really been enough instances where shows have sold out to make this necessary? From my point of view, I like to attend both days and £30 or more extra a day to make sure I get to see people is going to get expensive. I attended the guitar show on the Saturday and we did buy tickets for Nile Rodgers, thinking it would sell out, only to be sat in an auditorium that was maybe a third full. As it stands, and I've attended every year, the ability to pop in and out of events has made it a nice relaxed event. Cheers Alun PS returning to the original question, Michael Manring, Victor Wooten, Willie Weeks or Pino Palladino would be great :-)
12. It's interesting that "timbre" has been mentioned as I was once discussing possibly buying an EUB with a well known double bassist who gave me a long lecture on how EUBs didn't have the right sound, etc, etc. He then went on with a beautiful looking double bass....with a huge magnetic pick up and preceded to sound like a fretless Precision all night! I play electric bass in a local house band and, in about 9 years, have only had one or two "name" players be sniffy about it not being a double bass. Some have even conceded that they "don't usually play with electric players but that swung like hell". Sadly the jazz scene can be very conservative and often listens with its eyes rather than to the music. For electric players who, in my opinion, swing convincingly - Bob Cranshaw, Charnett Moffett, Christian McBride, Gary Willis, Laurence Cottle, Steve Swallow, Jimmy Johnson, Skulli Sverinsson ( probably spelled wrong), Geoff Gascoine, Simon Little, Jaco, Mike Pope, Tom Kennedy, John Patittucci, Victor Wooten, Todd Johnson, Kevin Glasgow. Yes, it's a different sound but doesn't mean it can't work. I am tempted to refuse to book guitarists who don't have a banjo, replace all saxes with clarinets and trumpets with cornets just to complete the sound!
13. I spent the weekend there and had a great time, catching up with Steve Lawson, Stuart Clayton, Mike Flynn and many more as well as meeting lots of new people. I'm still in awe of how nice a person Doug Wimbish is! The noise was hard going at times but once I worked out that the trick was to try stuff just as the playing started again, I got to try a lot of nice new stuff ( and came away with a Yamaha TRB1006 as a result). Surprise hit of the show for me was the Dubstep masterclass, really interesting and more importantly MUSICAL. See you next year! Cheers Alun
14. A quick cheeky bump as the album is only available for a few more hours and then it'll be gone for good so if you want it, now's the time Cheers Alun

Cardiff bass bash?

I went to Si's original Cardiff one and it was good fun, so would love to pop in if I'm free
16. I'm really enjoying the Karma album so looking forward to hearing it live (and trying to work out how you play some of the unison lines!) PS another good example of quintuplets is in the main riff to Mike Keneally's Uglytown (the first two beats of the second bar in the intro are quintuplets) Cheers Alun
17. I have practiced them quite a bit over the years. The easiest way I know to play quintplets is to say "Hippopotamus" on each beat, although any 5 syllable word will do. It's sort a simpleton version of Indian rhythmic vocabulary. For septuplets try "Hungry Hippopotamus". For examples, there are loads in Zappa's work - Black Page has all sorts, Montanta and Inca Roads have quite a few quintuplets, amongst many others. Cheers Alun PS Kevin - looking forward to seeing you with Tommy Smith in Cardiff
18. Hi all. For the next 10 days, I have a limited edition album available on Bandcamp to raise money for Cancer Research's Busking Cancer campaign. Grab it while you can http://alunvaughan.bandcamp.com/album/lost-and-found
19. I have huge respect for his work with a lot of great artists, but I must admit I find his intonation pretty ropey
20. As well as having the treble up on the bass, have a play with the Sensitivity and Q controls - I need the Sens up quite high with my active Cort to get the sounds I want from it. Great pedal though.
21. The Ibanez SR506 is a lovely instrument but check them very carefully as I refused two earlier this year for defects. The first had a crack on the headstock, the second was a right mess - marks on body, glue on fretboard, terrible quality for a "brand new" bass sent from the distributor. Headstock Distribution were useless too - 3 months later I got a copy and paste email with no real explanation or apology so have really gone off Ibanez now.
22. The early ones in the Life Cafe were great but it does seem to be a bit of a step backwards moving to a smaller venue, maybe it's just due to the financial climate. Will wait and see who else is playing, as much as I like Marcus.
23. Has anyone heard any more about this year's event? Starting to get a bit tight for booking trains, hotel, etc
