1.
Don't forget the CS logo too.
I think I've gone on about that enough. The idea behind relic jobs is that you are supposed to be able to image you have (or someone has) been playing the instrument for years. That is fine, we all like to day dream. But how can you pretend it is a 1951 bass when the front headstock says "Telecaster Bass" (Late 60s-70s), the back of the headstock says "Fender Custom Shop" (90s onwards), the truss rod adjustment is in the wrong place, it isn't strung through body and custom colours are early 60s. As I said in the OP, it's a pointless relic.
  2. If his customers like his work and he can make money out of it then good luck to him. I just wish he had a better eye for detail and didn't present instruments as something they are not. I am a fully sworn Squier lover, people should be proud to display the Squier logo. Having looked at the pictures again, I think he has even applied a fake Fender serial number- that is just w***.
  3.
Strong words mate. I suppose you are entitled to your opinion, and yes this guy is not very good at relicing but to suggest he is deliberately involved in deception or is in any way nefarious is slander. Where's the love buddy this guy might be sitting at home reading these posts crying on his sander.
He, like many other relicers, may not be deliberately out to deceive with their work, but that doesn't stop someone selling the basses on as something they are not, that is why I dislike them. Relicers create objects that can be used by others to defraud. If he had offered this bass as a reliced Squier or with no headstock branding then I wouldn't have a problem. What really annoys me is not that a buyer might think it was a vintage bass, but that someone might be duped into thinking it was a Fender Custom Shop creation due to the decal on the back of the headstock.
  4.
Thought the same and then I played with the MIM 50s, normal and road worn. The relic'd neck had a better feel. I think some parts of the relicing process could be useful, but not the scars/scratches/dings part.
If they just made those MIM 50s with a nitro finish Fender would have a winner. I would love to have a bass that looked naturally road worn after a couple of decades use.
  5. Looking at the completed listings of this seller and having observed other relicers, these instruments don't sell for much. Considering the work involved to age a poly-finished instrument, or respray with nitro and relic, I just can't see how these are viable businesses.
  6. I am usually a fan of relics, but I wouldn't want to touch this one without hand sanitizer: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270835421411&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123 Besides looking like it has been buried or used as poo rag, it is made up to be a 1951 Telecaster bass, which is a massive anachronism. The back of the headstock also says "Fender Custom Shop", why would you do that? Why not just present it as a 1968 Telecaster bass and leave it at that? The wrecker of this particular bass also points out how the frets are in excellent condition, not exactly reliced then.
  7. Pretty much the only reason I use Fender 7150s is because of the gold silk, it goes really well with my daphne blue precision. Bling.
  8.
Terribly kind of you to say it was mildly amusing, I doubt others would be so kind
I was offended.
  9. I've always found DPD to be one of the better ones because I always get an email and a text telling me the hour slot when I will receive the package, if I know I wont be in then I will phone up and rearrange. Also whenever DPD deliver to me it is before 8:30am. Delivery drivers are not all bad, make sure that you buy from a shop that uses a company you find to be reliable and predictable.
  10.
Okay, last night's show was actually really very good. Except Ringo, as he is a twat. Can I go back and change my vote now?
I also enjoyed it, especially as Avery Sunshine's bass player seemed to be playing a Squier Classic Vibe, awesome!
  11.
Guy Garvey from Elbow used to host a BBC R6 show and he was great. He was witty, got a lovely temperment and knows how to relate to his guests. I reckon they should bin LWJH and just start a new show with a similar format with Guy in the hotseat.
Yeah, Guy Garvey would be good... or Claudia Winkleman.
  12. This type of thread is becoming a Basschat cliche. Things are sh*t, it was much better when I was younger, when you get to my age etc. Having a bit of live music, in whatever format, is better than having none at all. I will generally buy a handful of albums each year based purely on listening to Later. More than that, I can remember some really brilliant performances over the past couple of years.
  13.
Yeah, I want something from 1983 - but what was actually good back then ? It certainly isn't Fenders.
I thought the consensus was that 1983 was a good year for Fenders, I have played a couple and they have been pretty tasty. Trouble is they get marketed as "last years at Fullerton" these days, with a premium attached.
  14.
bass nerd webpage
That is brilliant, Basschat needs renaming.

    generics.

I have been through phases of boutique pedals, home made pedals, micro pedals, big boards and little boards. I have found the only satisfactory way to have a nice clean board is homogeneity. All my basic core pedals are now Boss compacts, not the best looking or the best sounding but the uniform board with tiny connector jacks is deeply satisfying.
  16. It's time to start a vintage bass dendrochronology business. EDIT: What he said ^
  17.
He's not as good as Mark King though Oowwwww! Who threw that?
Who is Mark King?
  18. Also I don't really understand the volume argument when it comes to bass amps/cabs. At small venues- pubs, clubs, village halls etc, 2x12 with 750W power handling is more than you will ever need. At larger venues there is almost always a PA system and the bass amp ends up being used for on stage monitoring, for which a 2x12 with 750W power handling is more than you will ever need. Size and weight should really be the key considerations and the SP212 is pretty dense, but portable in one hand if you are young and fit. It is nicely compact.
  19.
They do offer one benefit - lower frequency response in the cab. So, basically, these cabs can be smaller than the competition by being an isobaric design, without any loss in the lows. And they are definitely small and deep - I used to have a SP210. Tone was great. Not very loud though I found, due to the dual drivers but only one producing any sound (the other drives the isobaric chamber). But if you can put enough watts in, you should get enough volume out. I know am making the old assumption that watts = volume but I don't know enough to think otherwise yet!
What were you running it with? I have not come across a volume problem with my Terror Bass/SP212 pairing.
  20. I am 100% GAS free ever since buying a motorcycle. Now that is an expensive pursuit.
  21. "Crafted in Japan", shafted in Chichester. What is the point in sanding away bits of the body but ignoring the super-shiney hardware?
  22.
He looks like Eddie Jordan.
I think he looks a bit more like a cross between Mark Gatiss and Gerry Adams. That's a good mix.
  23.
is there a tick-box to display questions and answers?
The seller can choose to make the Q&A public when they answer.
  24.
I have always had that problem with strings. Have you tried buying online from say... http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/?
Yeah, definitely try strings direct, the strings will arrive before you have finished placing your order.
