1. sorry rather not post it at this point
2. Are players who use the amplifier as a large part of their sound (I'm thinking George Mraz, Palle Danielsson) somehow inauthentic, particularly considering their straight-ahead jazz credentials? And is it really appropriate to play on gut string and no amp when almost no drummers use calf drum skins? now I love palle danielson , My song and belonging are among my favourites and george mraz is a great player however if we talking about straight ahead jazz being standards played with the usual 2 in the head 4 in the solos, head solos bit of trading head. like say late 50s blue note then yeah I think the pickup amp sound is inauthentic. I think gut and no amp is the most appropriate way to go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1HvI-uiwCQ
3. On the whole I find EB doesn't really swing ( although I love swallow, jaco, jeff andrews etc ) in a straight ahead setting and for me it's something to do with the right hand. Not really sure why exactly but maybe it's to with the amount of flesh on the string and the weight of the arm and the sense of momentum this generates with the crotchet feel ?
4. Bit of a long shot ,wondered if anyone had a polystyrene fabric covered case they could lend hire or sell to me this sunday. I've got some gigs in paris starting monday and I'd assumed I'd be playing a house or hired bass which I've always done working with this artist ,got the details yesterday and the manegement want me to take my bass on the eurostar from kings cross and I'm a bit worried about it .
5. just posted them on to you Burg sorry for the delay. I've just strung my bass up with some new silver slaps and they sound a bit looser and deader than the trial set of goldens I just took off, weird hey, wonder if they'll bed in and open up a bit, also the fabric winding on the E comes down over the nut and onto the vibrating bit of the string , is this normal?
6. When did string bass take over from horn bass in jazz?
7. For Sale Ampeg SVT15EN £100 great old school sounding cab 8ohms jack and speakon connectors good condition, a few scuffs and little rips on the vinyl but perfect working order http://i1312.photobu...zps5e804728.jpg trade for a boss multi fx collection only from Stoke Newington North London
8. Ampeg SVT412he My all time favourite cab , if you're after a big rich powerful good old fashioned bass tone then it doesn't get better than this. I bought it new about 7ish years ago , it's pretty battered the vinyl's a bit tattered and torn and it's missing 2 of the rubber feet but it still sounds like it did when it was new. It'd love to keep it and I think it sounds much better than my 1200 odd quids worth of berg cabs but I live in a second floor flat and the wife's pregnant so I'm having to have a big clear out. 4ohm speakon and jack connectors adjustable horn here's the spec http://www.ampeg.com/pdf/svt412he.pdf collection only from Stoke Newington North London
9. wow love this guy, never heard him before
10. Wow I really like these strings, I've got a "lott" bryant I bought new and I had a gut G and velvet garbas on it. The golden slaps are lower tension and warmer than the velvets and but also sound more resonant on my bass . The sound I'm going for is more jazz pizz gut ( paul chambers, israel crosby ) and the slaps are way more like this than I expected , I thought they'd be more rockabilly slap. I agree with what other people have said about the pop to the front of the note too. Basses are fussys buggers , my old german likes it tight and sounds great with spiros and sounds floppy and dead with gut or pretend gut (velvet , innovataion etc ) but these are the ones for my bryant ( for now anyway !! ) Daf do you sell them? where's the best place to buy them?
11. Lovely swinging playing ,great drum solo too
12. https://www.youtube....h?v=zJ9QfISW-Gs https://www.youtube....h?v=JnvphEgF7j0 Sue Pollard vs miles davis, Sue's performance is certainly the more committed of the 2
13. I think Flloyd Edgar has one.Cairo bill had one that I think he sold don't know if that was to another bc'er I've got a "lott" bryant I bought new off paul. I'm finally really happy with mine,it did take quite a bit of work , I had the finger boarded chuted , new bridge, tried loads of different strings etc, I'd definately recommend a Bryant bass, a few well respected bass makers have said to me they're a bit crude but I don't know how he does it for the money and I'd agree with that.
14. I couldn't agree more, laurence is a lovely fella and a great luthier.
15. merlefest i think is at the end of april, worth a look
