So will know in future to take off the back and make sure the pots don't move while tightening them =] I'm gonna do some research on more detailed care for when i get my lovely bass back =]
  2. Thanks for the replies guys i've been losing faith in the bass as my only other bass is a 4 string and getting on a bit aswell (but i've had it since new and was my first bass so has been through a fair bit..) will replace the pots soon and probably look at a new backup bass in the summer when cash flow is stlightly better. =] @truckstop, was quite likely the bass I bought that you were looking at =]
  3.
with the bolloxy bass 'solo'. half reversed (or compressed to hell, cant remember). I used to play that one too. You poor bugger.
As far as i know to record it they played the first half of it then reversed the recording of it.. never heard that song played live... will have a hunt on youtube now to see what I can find out of curiosity...
  4. just thought, possibly should have gone under 'technical issues' thread. apologies, feel free to move if it makes more sense...
  5. Hey all, Bought a bass on here about 5 months ago. (ibanez K5 - old one not the black version) with a replaced pre-amp... The bass is a beauty to play, but had a couple of issues when i bought it: #loose volume/tone pots - which were cleaned and tightened ASAP by myself #problem with the input jack - cables would cut out when moved in a certain way especially when cable was tucked behind the strap button. some cables would cut out completely some needed adjusting until they fitted - jack barrel was replaced by my friendly neighbourhood music shop. Music shop gave the bass a full new set up (action set a tad low as standard) and I gave the bass a nice new set of elixiars.. The bass travels from mine to band practice in a hard case (again bought by me). but noticed the volume pot had worked its way loose again so used the alan keys and a wrench to tighten it again, didn't test it at the time as it was 4am and I didn't do much just tighten the pot to assumed all was well. Played the bass a day or two later and found that there was no output from the bass... nothing.. battery was fine. amp/footpedal worked fine but no output at all... Bass is now back in the shop again and i'm starting to lose faith... Its a beauty to play but i'm starting to not trust the bass and thinking about changing it. but all i'd be looking for is a similar 5string ibanez from the SR range (rather than another K5). Am I just unlucky? Should I think of it like a car and when it gets starts to have a problem, it'll have more and just retire the bass and keep as an [seemingly unreliable] backup... Sorry for the rant, just venting frustration on what is an otherwise lovely bass.
  6. I've always hated 'hey Jude' can't stand the song. a few years ago when in a covers band that played gigs about once a week. we all hated the song and so never played it. Got asked as a special request from the person who booked us, so learnt it, played it once or twice during practice, played it once on stage for them and NEVER AGAIN. Ugh, horrible horrible and i'm surprised its not on more people's lists...
  7. I write on bass (the odd noodle on piano and guitar as i played both before settling as a happy little bassist) Either hold a bassline and leave the guitarrist to noodle ontop until we find something we like. or vice versa. he plays a chord progression and i noodle til we find a groove we like then change it around a bit. sometimes i'll just transpose up the dusty end of the fretboard to write little guitar licks for him if he doesn't already have something. ( <3 my effects pedal with distortion) but this is rare. he's a talented baw.
  8. Bought an ashdown amp from the Manchester oxford road store of academy sound back in the day and couldn't have been happier with the service. Have been into the manchester store of PMT recently just for a wonder round with the guitarrist from my band. We had the same guy looking after both of us who admitted he was a guitarrist but 'knew enough about bass to help me out'. The guy kept wondering round checking up every now and then after giving me a lead and saying to just take stuff off the walls and plug into whichever amp was on. (continuing when i asked about actives to say if they don't have a screw on the back feel free to swap batteries from one bass to another. guy was nice enough when i'd stated my intentions (i.e. to try a load of basses to get a feel for what i'd like to get in a month or two). no pressure for a sale, no pissing around left me to it witout hovering over my shoulder every 3 miniutes. when i was done, went to check on my mate and could over hear the same guy being condescending and trying to force a sale on him. i'd say the stiff until you get to know them rule applies. in the same way that if you say exactly what you're after and why they're probably more helpful as they know if they're going to get a sale or not and how much they could pressure you (which doesn't work on me).
Has anyone played any of the new SRT's (800 and 805)... ? http://www.ibanez.com/BassGuitars/Series-srt
Similar to the BTB series as far as i remember. only played one for about 2 miniutes in PMT salford, so may not be the most reliable opinion...

Just thought i'd say (10 day bump due to being stuck in work) I spent a 9 hr round trip to go and pick up an old style K5 from our own Stan_da_man, and my god, i couldn't be happier right now. i've sent it in to my local music shop for a quick checkup and getting a nice shiny new hardcase so i'm not lugging it round in my tattered old ritter case. Thanks all, and Kes is a happy little bassist right now (and slighly drunk after work) life is good.
  13. just to be different from the good old punk classics i thought i'd throw something....sh*tt*r in the mix... bloodhound gang - The roof is on fire.
  14. Good to hear you're happy matey, Ashdown user here, but haven't had to deal with their customer services yet.....
Absolutely none on my 505 - I just position it where I want it to be and it stays there.
you've no idea how much i enjoyed reading this sentence... concerns came from the sheer lightness of the ash body on the 605 (and the fact that the 500 - as there wasn't a 505 to hand - wasn't really on the heavy side either... )

    Ibanez SR range.

Just had a thought (I was playing a 605&505) today at a shop in camden before heading back up north to where i live... I've only played these basses on my knee in the shops. while i love them all the lightness of the ash body got me thinking. especially as i'm looking for a 5 string (coming from playing a 4) what is the neckdive like on these or for that matter other 5 stringers? is there any? is it manageable or (which i'm assuming it isn't considering the case as the quality of everything else on them) unmanageable requiring a movement of the button to be comfortable... -edit didn't want to start a new topic as i thought it was running on similar lines...
  17. Was the standard 'average guitarist' took lessons in school from the guitar teacher there.. left school, mates band required a bassist, gave it a bash.. something clicked and just read forums/tutorials to teach myself technique (although STILL don't have the thumb in the middle of the neck thing) so many years later, bass just seemed to spark soemthing that guitar didn't.... -edit for clarification - lessons for guitar, picked up bass, had enough enthusiasm to learn off my own back using tab/tutorials etc online.
If you plan on buying without trying then don't get an SRX as they are the wide fingerboard models. The SRs are famous for their slim necks but the SRX is a bit of a beast in comparison
Cheers for the concern, i've already tried an SRX, it almost feels like i'm playing a fender. i'm not sure if they're 'jumbo' frets but i ain't fond which is a shame cos of the sound and look of them with the big chunky pickups (i hope i'm remembering the right bass) i'd love one if it wasn't for the neck. ...don't mind the odd warrick aswell from what i've played but just doesn't quite beat those ibanez SR necks. (my god i'm obsessed).
What's the Ibanez Paul Gray used to play? His bass, not the signature one... I'm assuming there's a difference, mind.
google search, website of unknown credibility.... The K5 never occured to me. will have to give one a play and see how it is tone wise compared to the others (I find many of the signature guitars - haven't played many sig basses) are pretty limited in the different tones and things they can offer. Still hunting around on gumtree and ebay etc
The neck on the 4 is a joy to play, I'm guessing that the 5 would be quite a fast neck. Great tonal range, the back of mine is curved inwards, to fit around your "two pints, steak & chips"
Oh the neck on the ibanez is pretty much the reason I'm looking for a 5 in this range... absolutely lovely. Small hands etc. still spacing enough to slap (on the i think it was 505 and prestige or whichever ones PMT in Manchester had. Love the shape and lightness of the bodies - despite not having a 'two pints, steak & chips' belly despite being sat here with a full english...

    Ibanez SR range.

God Damn! i've just woken up and thought i'd check the thread i made last night. to all the replies above. i'm astonished. all i can say is thank you. exactly the type of info I was looking for plus lots more. I was expecting to look at this thread and just have a page of links towards the 'tonewoods' thread. (which i did see just knew it wasn't just the different woods) Aye about the whole Ibanez thing, i've been trying loads of different basses recently and haven't found one that i like as much as its equivalent Ibanez... I shall be waiting and watching the bass sale threads to see what comes up and currently off to look into older models. (as i previously wasn't sure on the deterioration of some on board electrics but on the higher grade ones i'm sure its fine). signed - as i don't have a sig... one happy bass player.
  23. Hey all, I've been playing bass for around 5 years now (a couple of cover and originals bands) and my current bass (Ibanez GSR200) is about 4-5 years old... i've been playing around with lots of different basses recently trying to find a nice upgrade... The things i'm looking towards atm is a 5string (due to playing bits of light metal and rocky stuff and wanting to play around with a 5 string for a change) and looking at the SR range - i just have 2 questions about it.... 1. the body type seems to be the only difference in the range... ash/mahogany etc. is there much difference aside from that? (any preferences) 2. while I can afford the ~£500 price tag i'm also looking around for 2nd hand ones. which as they're older wouldn't have the new mid range frequency select switch. Would i be missing much? is it worth buying new at all if i shop around (mostly on here) for a well looked after one. Thanks for any replies constructive or trolling... Kes.
  24. I used to have an Escort estate, the amount of stuff you could cram in that with both back seats folded down was fantastic. (still an Astra ain't bad at all and has more power so i'm not stuck doing 50 on the motorway with all the kit while bandmates blast off into the sunset with light 3 door cars. haha)
