1.
I've got the Fiesta Red PJ 5 in my avatar and also a 5 string Jazz deluxe in blue..... Enjoy the process, I promise you won't be disappointed. I'm excited for you!! Chris
Awesome! Thanks, Chris says either he or Lawrence are going to call me next week to discuss even more details. I'll keep you all updated on how that conversation goes!
Have you tried the jazz neck yet. Might be worthwhile and it gives you the change between jazz and precision. I'm 100% sure Chris and the guys will give you the best advice and might be worth waiting to see what they suggest. I'm assuming you've been at the workshop. Good luck with it. Dave
Haven't been to the workshop yet, I met Chris at bass day in manchester this year but other than that all conversations have taken place either by phone or facebook. Definitely going to rely on Chris' advice. I already get the feeling he totally understands my needs as a player and will not push me into anything I dont need just for the sake of it, which is a wonderful feeling in itself. Very much looking forward to heading up to the workshop at some point though, Cannot wait for the day when I have the bass in my hands for the first time. I'll probably get all emotional ahaha!
sorry to stir off conversation a little bit. But i think image if not already will definitely soon be almost 70%. Students are finding it easier to get a good education in music. There must be at least a dozen good contemporary schools and even more conservatoires that a producing amazing players ever year.
Yep definitely agree with you there, as a female player I'd say its there already anyway if not more. I'm well aware that 95% of the gigs I get is because I look good on stage, it still amazes me how many people (audience/band memebers/md's alike) are 'suprised' at the fact that I can actually play too.
Back on conversation. With a 5 string you have to accept that your probably going to want 35inch scale to get the best tone from the low B, also i like the neck to be wider nearer the pickups side for solo'ing. As a small being, 5ft 10, this completely takes away any "badboy" image that being in a band is supposed to create. 80% or so of my gigs that are on electric bass are done on the 4 string basses for that reason and also i dont need the low B without showing off
Lol yeah well Im about 5ft 1 which is why Chris was saying about making it smaller scale and lighter. The idea of having an instrument that wont completely dwarf me on stage as well as break my back (actually the 79 p-bass I own is pretty light but after a while even that wears me down) is totally weird for me lol! We'll see how it goes, I'm getting impaitent already and it hasn't even started!! Chlo x
 2. I had some moulded blue sparkly ear plugs once, got them on a special deal from uni. They were amazing, and did a great job (although might be tempted to not have the highest filters) but I lost them. Haven't had the money to replace them since. If I get a job with a band I recently auditioned for though, they are willing to pay for gear so I'll be definitely putting those down at the top of my list! Might even go pink this time. x
 3. *waves* yaay thanks lol I feel so loved already this is all extremely exciting lol. What overwater do you have woodster? x
 4. Hi Ben, lovely to meet you! Good luck with the new post, sounds like your getting a good response already. I'm a subscriber too but haven't had much time of late to look at the magazines dropped on my doorstep but I promise to do so soon. Chlo x
 5. My dad commited suicide in march, music was pretty much the only thing thats gotten me through. He was also an amazing musician, although classical and I owe almost everything to him. He was the one who made sure we always had the rolling stones or the who or bob dylan blaring out as kids. My whole family are pro musicians too, but he was the one totally in love with the pop side and from the day I announced all I wanted to do is play bass and be a rockstar he did everything in his power to help me get there. The funny thing is, despite having an amazing few years getting my career finally going, its only actually really picked up after he died. Like from the week after it happened. It hurts I can't ring him up to tell him but you know I have a sneaky feeling he already knows....x
 6. Maybe but most of my gigs dont need that extra range, so is there any point in paying extra for it? However I'm currently in between bands as my main one just broke up, I've had a fair few phone calls but as of yet not sure who's going to decide I'm their girl. One gig in particular is quite different to what I've done before, more electronic/multi instrmental/radiohead in rainbows type stuff so you never know that might require a 5 string. If I get it. Just hoping they decide before I finalize with Chris what I want him to make me. x
 7.
Fanned frets really aren't that common, I know plent of bassists that don't have a clue what they are, let alone the general public. Also, as a working player I'd personally say image is about 50% the deciding factor of getting the gig or not. You can be the best player in the world but if you don't look right, you won't get the gig.
spot on
Which bit is too "jazz"? The fanned frets or the 5 string part. Both are quite common these days, is your manager really THAT worried about image? Surely if something sounds good and encourages you to be a better player (which is what it's all about really) then surely that would be enough?
Kinda what Jake said but also, I have a very good 79 precision bass already. Which if the manager or md would have a choice of that or a fan fretted fiver, they would instantly choose the p. Im ok with that of course, but sort of defeats the object of being endorsed and therefore using the endorsed bass as much as possible! Plus its not completely free, its an artist deal endorsement (apparently chris says no-one really does full endorsements anymore as no or at least very few companies can afford it.) So its a case of a big discount instead and Im not forking out for something that wont get used. If I really need a five string, I've got a diamond series schecter that would do that job fine. Mind you its very much a rock/metal bass so currently getting dusty in a corner as I dont get many of those types of gigs. I also used to have a five string fretless too, but i sold it because it was again too 'specific' a bass and it just wasn't getting used. x
 8.
I've got an UK built J4 (check my avatar) - welcome to come and give it a try if you're in the Hatfield area..
no way seriously? Im in barnet! x
 9.
If you like a PBass neck then why not ask for a P profile neck on a Jazz body? As for colours, if your not going with a wood body then check out Alsacorp, they do some awesome stuff Sticking a wenge neck on there would make it quite different for a jazz. I really love the sound of wenge and bubinga together (being a warwick fan) so I got that in my custom bass. Lovely growly sound. But bubinga is most definitely not light Usual advice applies really, try loads of basses and find what you like. Have you considered fanned frets or making it a 5 string? Check out some dingwalls for there take on a jazz bass and you'll see how different it can really be Most of all congratulations and have fun with it
thats immediately a bit too 'jazz' for me I think and dont think my manager would let me 10 miles within any session but the p neck on a jazz body is something to think about. Chris was also talking about a p/j (ha pyjamas) pick up set up too which I might do. Maybe natural wood colour is a good option too. hmmm. Does anyone know which bass shops in london sell overwaters? I know the gallery sells the overwater by tanglewood basses but are there any places that sell the other series?
 10.
In no particular order.... Jim Glennie (James)
Nice to see a James fan in here. My old band, Unkle bob, were managed by Saul Davies and we toured with James a few times. Jim is a stand up bloke and truly wonderful bassist. Mine are; John Entwhistle (the who were my favourite band thanks to my dad at age 3) Bill Wyman (Decided I wanted to be in the rolling stones age 7 after seeing them live at wembley stadium) John Mcvie (fleetwood mac probably my favorite band at the moment) Tina Weymouth (just pure awesome) Duck Dunn (anyone with a ginger afro, a pipe and checked trousers is cool in my books) Chlo x
 11. Thanks guys for the nice comments! It's actually an artist deal endorsement, not a full endorsement (Chris told me they dont really do those anymore) so not free, but big old discount and its ongoing. Plus I'll still get all the benifits of being an endorsee and to be honest, having those guys behind me is a big step forward already no matter what else! Only ever heard lovely things about the instruments and Chris sounds like a total sweetheart. So Im totally stoked. As to what I'll be getting as my first Overwater bass, I want to keep it versatile and reasonably simple. Almost all the gigs Ive ever got and continue to get are indie/pop or folky, so lumping a great big fancy custom 7 stringer will probably just get me funny looks and possibly fired lol. My main bass is a 79 wine red custom u.s.a Precision, which I love and plays like a dream. So I'm thinking and Chris seems to be in agreement, that a J series would be the most sensible option for me. That way no-one gets freaked out when I take it out the case and I will be able to always use it in what ever gig I get given. Chris also said that being a bit on the tiddly side of things, he would he happy to make a slightly smaller scale and lighter instrument too. I've yet to think about woods and details...not exactly great when it comes to that sort of stuff. Anyone got any good advice? Though I know I prefer rosewood fretboard. Also got the girly issue of colour to contend with . OH decisions lool. Chlo x
 12. Hey all, Just got off the phone with Chris May from Overwater basses, its official, Im now a very proud endorsee!! So excited, to be considered worthy enough to be on the same list as the ox and david gilmor is completely overwhelming. Very much looking forward to having a close working relationship with Chris and the gang. Now to choose what I want made for me. All so prettyful!! *mind explodes* Anyway check out the website if you dont use it regualy for bass porn already. www.overwaterbasses.com WOOOHHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Chlo xxx
 13. we all love you phil, congrats again you did a stand up job! lovely to see you again after so long, make sure you ring me when you move to your new place. it'll be like old times! x
 14.
So not only deos it look cool as fook you're now telling me it sounds amazing too! . . . If you ever fancy selling it give me a shout please! Kelso
Haha will do, alternatively get in touch with the luthier. His name is Brad Lowe from california, you can find him on facebook under 'lowe custom guitars'. The basses and guitars he does aren't massively expensive and great instruments once set up properly. He's new to the whole luthier thing so needs as much support as he can get!
Is it left handed or is the picture reversed?
Picture is reversed im right handed.
 15.
Profile pic - love the bass! What is it? . . . Kelso
Its a hand painted/put together bass that is based on a 1950's p given to me by an american luthier. It sounds and looks amazing, weighs a tonne though and the neck is very chunky. So I'm not able to use it too often for long gigs. Will maybe use it for future recordings though....x
 16. sounds great good luck! hope it works for you x
 17. just follow the bass drum exactly for the rhythm of what ever it is that your playing and you will not only improve your timing, but your groove too and start to understand the role of a bassist alot more. the hardest thing is not overplaying, but if you just literally play with the drummer's foot and maybe add the odd fill or passing note in here and there (again preferably where drummer adds in a fill and to the same rhythm as he does it) you wont ever go wrong. good luck! x
 18.
Like this That's a pretty difficult bass part to master & you've really nailed it. Well done!
aww thanks alot, very kind of you. agreed its a tricky one, those riffs gave me the sweats for weeks lol. but then i was slightly put in my place when a 14 year old student of mine who had only been playing a year learnt it in an hour and up to speed by the following morning. lool. sw has some amazing lines though, really must learn a few more of them. x
 19. Here is mine, playing sir duke by the legendary stevie wonder. Chlo x EDIT; P.s Im not left handed, its just the program i used that made it look that way.
 20. Im going to be hanging around the ibass stand helping nick wells out with that if you guys who are going want to come and say hi! bit excited, plus im being featured in the first issue! hurraaaay xx

 22. hey guys, great thread. as of yet ive always been able to borrow basses when im out where ever i am going to. however soon, it might be a case that my bass is taken along. seeing as its a 79 custom shop definitely could do without it being damaged. will definitely make sure some of the above advice is adhered too but would be grateful if someone could tell me if they've flown using a mono m80 case and how well its withheld it all. thanks! Chlo x
