1. After many years of faffery I was finally at five. Was. Until last week, when I found a bass I simply couldn't live without. Now I'm a four and selling one of my faithful workhorse basses (after ten years!) to fund yet another purchase. I can't believe anyone would really be a five forever...
2. I shouldn't think it's too common an issue but the fingerboard on this bass was very thick and was pulling the neck forward beyond the point where the truss rod could compensate. So we removed a good 2mm (ish) off the board and now the neck is gorgeous
3. *Price Drop! Now £950!* Selling my Warwick FNA Jazzman 5-string bass after 11 years of service! I bought this bass new in 2004 and it has been my main instrument for the last ten years. I used it on countless records, most notably the last two albums with The Divine Comedy (Bang Goes The Knighthood & Victory For The Comic Muse; if you want to hear it in action have a listen to BGTK). It was also my main touring bass with Maggie Reilly and it has travelled all around Europe with me. Only selling as I have recently bought an Infinity NT 5-string which has become my main bass and I don't want the FNA to sit unplanned. It's a cracking instrument with loads of tone options and it deserves to go to someone who will play it all the time. It's standard issue apart from the chrome hardware and the extra-long neck which I ordered from Warwick. The neck is about an inch longer than the standard which really helps the sustain. It has had the fingerboard significantly slimmed down by Martin at The Gallery who also refretted it with slimmer frets. This was done many years ago and prevented the neck bending as these basses are prone to. Very fast smooth action and in great condition for it's age. Looking for £950 cash collected from Peckham or I could meet you halfway if possible. Message me if you have any questions... 4. Selling the preamp and faceplate (including all the appropriate knobs) for a Japanese Fender Marcus Miller jazz bass. I have recently upgraded the preamp to one of John East's Marcus Retros so this is now going spare. This is the original preamp and faceplate as included in the Japanese Marcus basses. No battery cover plate as this is a separate component and is still attached to my bass! £45 collected from Peckham or £50 posted within the UK. No trades thanks; trying to raise some cash towards a new instrument. Cheers!
5.
Great cheers Simon. I might stick it on GumTree too. Never tried that site before
I tried Gumtree once and never again; all I got was time-wasters and scammers :/
6.
I'd be more than happy to relieve you of those elixirs I bought a fretless 5er that came with an old set fortess and was quite impressed with them although I dont know what gauge they are. I know they weren't the usual 30-90s rounds I'd used for years. Seriously, drop me a PM if you want to get shut of them.
Ha! Will do
7.
I played on a BCer's Sadowsky the other week, and couldn't believe how tight the strings felt. I was informed that they were Elixirs.
That is exactly what I'm talking about! Really weird right?!
8. Thanks for the advice guys. I think i'll slap some Elites on there and see how it feels. To be honest I find the feel of the Elixirs a bit skanky with that coating; feels like someone has been playing my bass after a visit to Chicken Cottage....
9. Hi guys So I bought a beautiful Warwick Infinity 5-string secondhand from The Gallery a few weeks ago and it came strung with a brand new set of Elixir strings (45's). I'm finding the tension quite hefty and wondered whether this is the strings (I normally play on Elites 45's) or the current setup is a bit hefty for my liking. Martin set it up and knows my other basses so I'm guessing it's the strings. So my question is this; Do you find Elixirs have a heavier tension than other strings? I can see myself chucking out a perfectly good set of posh strings here...
10.
There are some good Facebook pages/groups where you can sell gear free. They have been ok for me, for example I couldn't sell my Thumb here but it went quickly on FB. UK Bass gear for sale trade, Bass market UK etc.
+1 on the Facebook pages. Bass Players Market UK and Bass Players Sell - Buy - Swap - UK only are the best for me. I've sold a stack of gear over the last few months; basses, cabs and fx and advertised here and in Facebook. Sold everything but one fx rack via the Facebook pages. Highly recommended and it's completely free!
11. Post updated to reflect separate items. So if you just want one thing now's the time to say so! Hit me with offers but no trades thanks...
12. That sounds fantastic. Great upright tone. Quite Eddie Gomez...
13. Also if all else fails or you're fingers don't yet feel up to the gig go to your local pharmacy and get some micro pore tape and tape them up. You can play through micro pore and it is the closest feel to skin on the strings..
14. There are loads of ways people suggest for preventing blisters but the best way is to just keep playing and build your chops up. If you're going with my method soak it and burst tonight so it can dry out overnight. It'll be pretty raw for a good few hours once you cut the blister away so you might as well sleep through that fun period
15. Ps. I use small nail clippers to cut the skin away once I've burst the blister bubble (puke!). It'll stung to burst it but once it's done it's just dead skin. Be careful around the healthy skin though otherwise you'll know about it...
16. If it were me I'd soften the skin in warm water then (puke) see if you can pop the blister and cut away the dead skin. Keep it dry and uncovered to let the skin dry out as much as possible and you should have something you can work with by tomorrow night. Main thing is keeping it dry and clean once you've got the dead skin out the way. If I have a run on bass guitar and go back to a heavy upright gig having not played it for a few weeks this can happen so I'm well used to this trick. On the gig, trying plucking further up over the fingerboard where the string is less taught and easier on the fingers- you'll last that bit longer trust me. Good luck! I feel your pain...
17. I'd highly recommend an Ampeg PF500 and matching 1x15" cab. Maybe the PF350 head if you want something less powerful. Both have headphone jacks for practice and you can mount the head to the cab for flip-top storage. The 15" cab sounds lovely and warm with plenty of vintage ooomph. It has a tweeter too which you can turn up or down on the cab itself to suit your sound. I've had one for a few years now and done all kinds of shows from large club dates to medium festival stages and it always sounds great. It sounds like a valve amp but it's not. And you can add a second cab at a later date if you do much bigger/louder shows but I've not felt the need. And the best thing? They're really cheap! I got the head and cab in a bundle deal from GAK for about £550. Best amp deal going. Definitely worth checking out. I promise you won't be disappointed.
18. Wednesday lunchtime bump! Open to offers gang...
19. You could try something like iMPC maybe and load your own samples onto the pads through iTunes file transfer. Should be nice and simple plus iMPC is a fun app to muck about with regardless...
