A brand new six string wal.... i wonder how much that would cost ?? i've lusted for one ever since i first saw one..
It will be interesting to hear what the prices are. There's certainly a lot of demand. All the pickups are essentially the same design and, (IMO), the pickup has a lot to do with the unique sound. So 6s, 5s and 4s should all have that Wal tone. dunc
 2.
The pickup on mine was very high, and mine was a bit of a beast.
I want to take the pickup cover off of mine. Can anybody tell me how hard that's going to be? Do I need to remove strings first?
 3.
I don't know what the "official" colour is/was. It's sort of a trans-cherry red. It is a complete refinish but, best I can tell, it's a perfect match.
Finally. I'm not great at this and it's a cloudy day so not enough natural light. But here goes...
 4.
Cool. Actually, now you mention it mine's a bit on the quiet side, so i should maybe raise the pickup somewhat. I reckon it could do with a bit of a refurb too after 35 years. It's on my list. Looking forward to seeing some pics, not many of them around anymore. What colour is it?
I don't know what the "official" colour is/was. It's sort of a trans-cherry red. It is a complete refinish but, best I can tell, it's a perfect match.
 5. I took my recently refurbed 75 4000 to practice yesterday. Wow, I'd forgotten what it sounded like loud. I think I need to lower the pickup the signal was so strong. And what an agressive almost distorted sound. I could barely calm the beast down. It cut through like a knife. Promise to gets pics up soon as I can.
 6. More news... http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/walba...y/message/11350
 7. That Harlot R type does look good, as do the rest of them. Very nice reviews. I don't know that it helps me decide what I would like since there are so many good options!
 8.
I hope so, Nik! I have had some woods for facings with Pete for about 3 years. Hope to hear from Paul that he is ready to continue work on material that has already been sent like mine
I'm curious to find out what the new price range is. I suppose since I have to ask, I couldn't afford it. Can't wait to see a pic of a new one coming off the line. dunc
 9.
'New Year gas' will have a very different meaning this year for many, as the big utility price rises kick in.....
I don't buy much but watch Wal prices out of curiousity. For at least a few years, prices always climb as Christmas and the new year approach starting about now. June and July seem to be prime for low prices. Of course with financial market collapsing, who knows.
 10.
Nice one. I notice we've got a few favourite players in common, like Burnel, Entwistle, Foxton, Lemmy, Wobble. Thought i was the only to notice Lee Gorman at the time. Didn't even know a bass could be played that fast back then. :-)
Interesting timing on this thread. I just got back my repaired '75 4000 last Saturday. Years of sitting idle in a case with Roto Swing bass on took it's toll on the neck. That and the fact that I had it routed for a neck pickup at one time, (only to be removed). Anyway, the set neck was pulling forward and needed to be reset. So it was a major repair. This was my 1st bass... probably got it in about '79 so I was will to pay. It is gorgeous now, main difference from new is no finish on the fretboard, at least not like it used to be, and Hipshot tuners. I will post a pic as soon as I take one. At times I also think it's a bit lacking in the low end. Depends what you compare it to. I'm sure I'll get plenty when I crank it up. In reference to Leigh Gorman, my 2nd bass is a Wal ProIIe. When I got it the low end blew me away and I switched to it almost entirely. Now I have both, plus a Jazz (type), making it easier to match the bass to the musical style. It's all good.
 11.
I got a message back from Paul yesterday and thankfully he is honouring Pete's waiting list and I'm on it. Now's the time to be patient and wait for my Wal creation!
Great to hear from someone who has heard from Paul and that the list is being worked!
 12.
You asked for it.... My Mk III was one of the last two basses Pete made. It was very special for a number of reasons, not least because I supplied the facings he used (picked up on a ski-ing holiday in Vermont). This is the only spalted maple Wal in the world.
Pete made a lot of great basses and he clearly put a lot into this one. It would seem he really wanted to do one more special one before closing up shop.
 13.
Morning! I've got two cabs running again, and was wonderin how to get the most outta 'em. My head's got two speaker outputs, and both cabs (one 2x15, one 4x10) have got a socket for an extension cab. I would usually just run off the speaker outs on the head, but is there any advantage (like more oomph/better response/power handling etc) to runnin one cab off the Ext.Cab. socket of the other? Cheers in advance! BTW, the gig is a real ale festival in Newbury, Berkshire...come along if you wanna get pissed on high strength homebrew
Can your head run both those cabs? I would guess both are 4 ohms so you'd be running at 2 ohms. SS head ususally don't like that. - dunc
 14.
The name is on the headstock - just google it. What this forum needs is a smiley for DOH!
http://www.jandd-guitars.com/jd-ra4.htm Horrible web site. Harmony-Central had one review where the cost was 270 euros. They sell a LOT of models. Didn't take the time to find an exact match.
 15.
Bear in mind how busy he must be! There must be hundreds of people who have either been waiting for news on a Wal order, need spare parts or are desparately keen to get their hands on a Wal that have all been denied any point of contact for well over a year now! I realise this is frustrating - I need some bits myself, but I'm sure he will get in touch with you in due course. I hope you have some luck soon FWIW I would also be interested to know if anybody has actually made successful contact with Paul via email.
Keep in mind that I think we're coming up on two years since Pete had to move out of his shop. Plus he had been slowing down for a while. (I assume this is the case based on what's been said on the Wal forums.) So there was very likely a long list in "the book". Paul has to get many custom parts made, (bridges, knobs, pickups, electronics!), and fill that long list before he advertises anything. Hopefully he'll get to the point where he can deal with parts etc... soon. I hope all that stays the same.
 16.
A friend of mine that emigrated to the States a few years ago used to play bass and has decided that his Fender Jazz would be better off in my hands being gigged. He doesn't want any money for it and it just needs me to pay shipping - does this just need marking as "gift" for shipping or will we have to produce some kind of proof of value and pay duty on it? Does anyone have any experience of this. Cheers Sean
Fly over for a visit and carry it back.
 17.
Do you mean the actual pots or the knobs Rich? Only Chris at Harrow Audio has been selling replacement knobs for the Pro models a while now..
I thought the knobs were gone, gone, gone. Chris would have to say though. Pots can be sourced but require a minor mod if you're replacing the original Radiohms.
 18.
brilliant tone, thanks for that
+1 great tone
 19.
He bought that vintage Jazz in late 1999 -- he's playing it in the Californication video. Or perhaps it's not the same one...
The rumour I've read a couple of places is that a record Co. exec gave it to him as a gift.
 20. Why does someone like Flea need a sig bass? Is it just the ego? Can't be the money. Personally, I'd play what I wanted if I were him. btw - I think his Jazz tone is great as was his MM and Wal tone. I'm not hip enough to know his Mod tone on record but I'll bet it's great as well.
Absolutely. Mark King stopped using GB's cos Bernie would not give him a handful of Rumours. Good call by Bernie? How many King basses have Status sold?
21.
The look is really growing on me actually. I think it's easier since mine is a subdued colour. Perhaps if it was desert orange it would be more difficult to love it! The white pickguard on that bongo 6hs really does make it look like a loo seat though!
The shape hasn't grown on me yet but I have heard they sound great. I would get one in white with a black or "water" colored pick guard... or dirty yellow??? sorry...
 22. Colin Moulding used an old one on the last 2 XTC albums (I've heard).
 23.
I think from looking at the headstock shape it was a Wal Custom.. Is it just me, or is the singer in the clip really, really irritating??
I agree. A black MkI. I've never seen a Pro without a paddle headstock. Every body Wang Chung tonight!
 24.
Dunc - Please! I want it!
I think you have me beat by a long shot. What color is that one front and center... salmon? And with the leather guard... WOW! Not bad lineage either.
 25.
I might try that, although won't adjust it much as it isn't my instrument.... yet! If I decide to buy the bass, then il get someone to go over the electronics for me, and check the transistors. I remember my friend saying that it was the two little clip things had broken on that one pot. It isn't much of a problem, as its set to a beautiful tone as is now, but it would be useful to know how/if it could be fixed. Hey Rich... il give you £350 if you want to get rid? £20 profit to you, I know im losing out.. but I wouldn't mind that !! I wasn't going to post the serial, if its safe though.... Its PB1260, which dates it at '78 roughly is it? It is heavy I guess, but I don't notice it one bit, as its a similar weight to my Overwater it seems. I have never really done alot of playing on lighter basses, although if I use the Precision or the RBX Yammy thing in college, they feel like toys.. !! There certainly is a lot of interest in this bass, and Wal's in general on here... is there a 'Show your Wal's' thread, or 'Early Wal Basses'... hmmmm.. It would be great to see everyones early Wal basses. I think the Mk III basses are stuning though, id love to get one of them!! I've seen the picture of the rare 6 string Mk III, now that would be right up my street!!
Lots of pics in the Wal database old and new(er)
