1.
Seems pretty abusive to me...
Really?? Perhaps opinion based threads should be banned in that case, which would result in 90% of the forum disappearing. I've just read the entire thread again, and there are far more things people could take offence too. Jeeeeez.
 2.
IIRC that particular bass actually belongs to a member here. While it's possible to have a laugh poking fun at what we might consider the less attractive instruments, I think actually singling out a particular individual's bass for abuse is a bit too far...
Ugly is in the eye of the beholder, and completely subjective, most basses listed are also in the most beautiful bass thread, almost every type of bass has been mentioned here, along with many pics, all of which have owners. I don't care if Fenders are mentioned (Which they have), if someone thinks my basses are ugly, then fine by me, thats what this thread is all about. I know what I like, and care little if someone else thinks its ugly. Thats what's good about a forum, it's full of opinion, (especially threads that actually ask for an opinion, like this one) otherwise there is no forum. Lets be honest, anyone buying a bass like that, isn't going to be offended by someone thinking it's ugly are they, and they will be very aware that it's going to attract some comment, from people who love it, or not, it's hardly subtle is it. Also, there was no abuse, as you stated, I just think it's ugly. One man's meat..,,,etc.
 3. Here's another one, with which you should seek immediate psychiatric help, if you like it in any way...
 4. Should I stop playing a slap version of 'smoke on the water' then??
 5.
JV88** or JV00** ? I found the other photo of the scratchplate you emailed ages back. It seems to be cut at a shallower angle than curent scratchplates too. ahem, form an orderly queue
It must be JV088**?? I would guess neck date of first week of June '82? Looking at the thread, I think I'm first in the queue if there is one? Joking aside, it's lovely.
 6. Loving this, '78 natural 'Ray, with matched '78 beige tolex 120 (One Twenty) bass combo, and original coily lead. Lovely stuff, how rare are these amps! Great to see a matched set like this, thought it was worth a share! And if you wanna buy it, 3300E http://www.ebay.it/itm/MUSIC-MAN-STINGRAY-VINTAGE-1978-MATCHED-COL-SUO-AMPLIFICATORE-115-B-ONE-TWENTY-/130829070804?_trksid=p4340.m444&_trkparms=algo%3DCRX%26its%3DC%252BS%26itu%3DSI%252BUA%252BLM%252BLA%26otn%3D6%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D4783870432307621594 Someones gonna be very happy with this!
 7.
Odd detail in the Fender-logo Jazz compared with the later JV is the scratch plate is 3 ply rather than the 4 ply of the later one. I wonder if Rick's is the same and when it changed over.
Guy, The very first '62 reissues were all 3 ply - Black/white/tort (Large Fender decal), so I believe the 3-ply was only used for the first 9 weeks, before they changed the specs quite considerably. They changed quite quickly though. I've seen an August '82 bass (large Squier decal), and that was a 4 ply, and very poor tort. Fender have never got the tort right on reissues, in fact they still don't, a point that spoils even expensive custom shop reissue jazz's to this day. These first JV's, and the very first Fullertons are not bad at all, but thats it. Some of the latest CS '64 relic's have terrible guards on them...and they still want $4k for them! Do you know the neck date of yours? So, when are you selling yours?, it looks a bit rough, but I'd take it off your hands! Seriously, very, very nice.
 8.
A lot of my popular music exams through college and uni so far have been concerned with 'popular music since 1960' as it differentiates from 'classical music since 1900' ...not ideal, I'd have said somewhere between 1945-55 would have been a better start date, or for this at least from '51 when the first P was introduced.
That's fair enough chap, was just curious. Popular music really changed in '54 when "That's Allright" was released, and the first mainstream electric bass, as you say was late '51, so 1960 seemed to be an odd choice, but then if thats what the courses these days start from, then who am I to comment. Good luck with the dissertation anyway, interesting, very broad, and very subjective subject, that you could sum up in 3 or 4 paragraphs, or a 4 volume book series, no doubt yours will be somewhere in between. I wish you well, can I reserve the first copy when you're finished?
 9. Also, may be worth contacting Bootzy, as he has one; http://basschat.co.uk/topic/116578-precisions/page__st__540 He's called it a; Fender P55 P/J Custom Shop, which would be right with the contours, despite it being a top-loader. Is yours also a top-loader, or large ferrules?
 10. That decal on the back of the headstock looks like the later version, not from '94. During '94 they were the embossed versions, not decal's. I'm assuming the certificate that it would have been issued with is long gone, which is a great shame, and will reduce value quite a bit unfortunately. It will have clear dates on the neck heel, and in the neck pocket of the body, which will show properly the exact dates anyway. I must say, it looks like a 2001 to me, as has already been suggested. I have a 2001 CS '51 P, but it's a different model entirely, and limited, with different serial system on the bridge plate.
 11. Why have you chosen to start at 1960? Any specific reason?
 12.
This deserves to be here - Fokus Pirat (Czech)
Is that a John Merrick signature bass? Sorry, I'll get my coat.
 13. Ibanez SR ( )
 14.
I don't like a gretsch..... This one to be precise....
It is hard to beleive that a guitar maker famed for making some absolutely stunning, highly detailed, and iconic hollow bodied guitars over the years, even thought to make that.
 15.
You can't not like a Gretsch.
Really?, have you seen the 'Billy Bo'. And even the nice one's, have this as their headstock! I rest my case.
 16.
Those Gus basses, looks like someone has found something they shouldn't have in their mum's handbag they should and decided to use it for styling.
17.
I think one of the most beautiful guitars makes the most horrible bass...the Les Paul.
This is very true, it's funny that the scale just doesnt work does it. I think if the headstock was the larger, fanned type, like the guitars, then it would be better, but it has that slimmed, epiphone LP style headstock, but something with the ratio's just doesnt work.
 18. Oh, and they are japanese, from very late 60's, to late 70's.
 19. Pics, different bass models, but you get the idea..I'm pretty certain it's one of these, as referred earlier, just took me a while to find the evidence! They made very cheap copies of all kinds of basses, and there was little or no consistency between them, very roughly thrown together, absolute shocking instruments!
 20.
Pics seem to have vanished - I'll see if I can fix. In the meantime here 's a pic of the original packaging - anorak anyone
Very cool, what SN# is it? Nice, if they did anorak's, I'd have one!
 21. I think its a Jedson.
 22. Nice played-in bass there, mojo in spades! Good luck with the sale.
 23.
Aaaw, come on!
Of course, I forgot to mention those snow shovels, keep 'em nearby though, may need them in a couple of weeks!
 24.
............. a hideous squared off canoe paddle instead of a head Sorry Wal owners
This is true, ruins a good bass.
