Rick's Fine '52 replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Ah, just realised its actually at the base of the neck, what I was looking at was the random brown blob where it would be on the headstock which now makes me wonder why the blob is there?
'Blob'? Love it, made me smile, from now on, the walnut cap, will be called 'The Blob'. -
I just want to dust off the little bits of sawdust on the front of the body where he's undone the screws. Grrr, that's really got my OCD going.
Jeeez, how do you get through the day, must be very stressful??? I jest of course, I think we all have varying degree's of OCD, and my Wife and Son would happily share the list of all mine!! -
Sorry for pursuing this is your FS thread, but that explanation isn't logical or remotely consistent, or supported by any sort of corroboration by Fender employees, records, or anecdotes. Who is the quote from anyway, I'm curious? I understand this to remain a mystery even to the most dedicated experts, and I've yet to hear an explanation that is borne out by any evidence. Please take the nitpicking as a bump for a gorgeous instrument. I have a LPB '66 P without the stamp and a '66 S/B J with one, FWIW, and IME many of the best Fenders I've payed are from that year.
This is not my thread, so please PM me for a response, as I have no intention of hijacking someone's sale thread of a very fine bass. In your PM, please give some introduction about your experience of vintage Fenders, as there's little mystery about these marks. Having said that, there are some oddities within Fender, particularly the pre-CBS era, where myth and legend do occur, and some acceptance that no-one will ever know, must prevail. Thanks, Rick.
Good luck with your sale, that'a an US price for a real beauty! Where did you hear about the ES stamp's meaning? It has been a subject of debate for years and I've never heard a reasonable explanation. They appear on a good number of '66 Fenders but AFAIK not on other years' instruments.
Reliable Quote: 1966 and the "ES" Stamp. In 1966, Fender used the "ES" code a lot on their custom color instruments. At least for 1966, the ES code was used as some sort of default for custom colored instruments (be it Teles, or Strats or Jazz Basses). This two letters ("ES" for "Enter Special") seems to denote a special order, at least for 1966. Again this is has been seen lots of times on 1966 documented original custom color instruments. I have also seen the "ES" stamp on some 1966 sunburst instruments! (Perhaps these guitars were special show models, so extra care was taken in their finish.) The 1/2" tall 2-letter code were a factory color code, and are completely different than the 1/2" tall three-digit codes. The two-letter code appears to be CBS/Fender's way of specifying bodies to be painted a custom color for a special order once the body was in the spray booth. If a guitar has a two letter code on the body *only* (and not the neck), again this confirms the 2-letter code was an original factory color code (and does not indicate a factory refinish order). But then there is this question: why do only some 1965-1968 custom color Fenders have this two letter code and others do not? It may have to do with how many custom colored guitars were being painted at any point in time, and the 2-letter code was applied to avoid confusion. Or it was applied just for particular special orders (like a Fender NAMM show guitar or a special dealer/artist order). Rick

How much?,these normally fetch £4-500? Its not limited, and it's not a '54. A sunburst slab precision is just wrong, and isnt a reissue of anything Fender ever made? This still has almost 2 days to go, and its £820? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251196240138?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1426.l2649 Even the blonde '54 Jap reissues (Which are very rare BTW, don't fetch anywhere near this one)

Does this count? Always wanted one to match my '58 P, love it, they're actually much smaller than I thought, cute little tweed case too; -
(routed all the way through, every hole was filled with a resin-like substance, logo scratched of the headstock with a chisel, no tuners,... Was it worth it to restore it? probably not, as this thing isn't really worth much, but the satisfaction of saving this thing that was destined to end in the dustbin: priceless!
Routed all the way through??? Brilliant, who, or why, do people do such things? Congrats on saving a perfectly decent bass, great job....as always! -
how have you not soldered it together yet? I no way have that patience! I wee build I'm doing the only way I knew that I would let the finsih cure for long enough was leaving it a week before ordering the parts!
Good things come to those who wait!! I have two weeks off at xmas, starting next Thursday, so will have a look then, I still need to locate a good picture of what wires go where, it's been a while! Been playing it unplugged today, it's awesome!
Hi Rick, What can I say? Brilliant doesn't really cover it - if it sounds anything like it looks it'll be just great. For My money you made absolutely the right choice with the Rotasounds - you can't whack 'em. This is an instrument that is meant to give off pure unadulterated raunch - the vulgar (I use the word advisedly) uncultured tones are the perfect 'bottom end' for any rock band on the planet, in my humble opinion. As you know I recently stripped one down to the pick-ups for the first time since I bought it 35 years ago, and there was a bit of a disintegrated mess where somebody had put some pink foam rubber under the pick-ups. Under one pick-up there was still what was left of the original black foam, which I assume was fitted in the Fender factory. My question to you is - what kind of foam did you use under the pick-ups, as I really need to replace it?
Thanks for the comments Wally. I used late 60's grey bottomed pickups, and they came with the original brass ground plate, and the rubber, albeit sticky, was pretty intact, although hardened somewhat, so I just used that, and I'm hoping when it's soldered up, it will sound as it should. You can get reissue foam pads, like the one here. You can get them on there own, without the brass plates, which would only cost a few quid. I'll try and PM you a link. I may even have some, I'll have a look over the weekend, and if I find them, I'll send you them.

OK, I received the tuner ferrules today, so finally got to string her up. surprisingly it needed little setting up. The neck was straight, and perfectly aligned within the neck pocket, so no shimming. Very slight saddle height adjustments to match the slight radius of the neck, and we were good to go. Nice low action, no buzzing (The neck is new, so wasnt expecting too many issues there). It plays and sounds lovely unplugged. The only thing left to do is to solder the grey bottom pickups onto the '66 pots, and then fire her up. This can wait until the christmas break, when I have a couple of weeks to do it properly. Delighted with the results. The body and finish are nothing short of spectacular, if not perfect from the brief I gave. The neck has surpassed my expectations when i set out on this, and the rest of it is original '65/'66. I'm a happy bunny. Here's the pics just taken of the tuners, and it strung up. I'll try and get some nice pics that show off the finish in the daylight at the weekend, although some of the pics on my last update post show it off pretty well. heavy, but still transluscent white blonde, medium weather checking, lovely and veiny, just right. Thanks for looking, and everyone's comments along the way. I've enjoyed this more than anything else I've done, probably because it was so difficult, and therefore challenging, and ultimately rewarding. I'm glad I stuck to my desire to have original components, despite urges along the way, (Fuelled by my imatience to finish it), to use the odd new reissue part, and hopefully this will result in the closest possible replica/tribute bass. Hopefully the next update will be some sound clips, or worse still, a dodgy youtube upload! I wish all subscribers to this thread, and all of basschat of course (Although they won't see this), a very Merry Christmas, and I hope Santa brings you what you want!! Cheers, Rick.
Hi Rick, Thanks for the post. I was looking around on google earlier today, and came across your BassChat project about building a replica Precision. I found it very interesting, and I thought that I would send you a post on the subject, but now I've logged back into BassChat I can't find your thread - perhaps you could drop me a link. Thanks
Wally, Here's the link, I've just added some update pics this evening, an interseting read from the beginning, it's been a long labour of love for me, having not managed to get a real one. Not as interesting as yours though!!! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/187288-66-slab-precision-build/page__fromsearch__1 Cheers, Rick -
I think the idea was good, and appreciate all the work that was involved, but the informalness of the marketplace, is kinda nice.
Woah - really? Do you know where I might find one for sale? I must have one!
I'm amazed Luke's is still for sale, best fender bass for sale on here for months.
booger, teaches me for opening my mouth on things I know nout about. I should stick to japanese copies of this bass from the early 80's....
IMO, the JV's are better...in all categories, and more accurate necks/bodies.
I don't think the saying 'its worth what someone will pay for it' applies to a quality instrument. Its worth whatever the seller WANTS it to be worth, and if people can't stretch to it, they don't get it! Simple as.
Also true, especially applies the rarer things get.
................(though to be a pedant this isn't a '57ri)
Actually, it is, albeit rare finish. Original blonde/maple/gold '57's are exceptionally rare. I've only seen 2, and this is the second; http://www.gbase.com/gear/fender-precision-bass-1957-see-through-blonde Fullerton, in '82, made the; 3-tone '62 reissue P, 2-tone '57 reissue P, blonde '57 P, and, starting in December '82, the stack knob Jazz, in 3-tone. Lots of other finishes followed later.
It's a Fullerton RI. Fender were at the top of their game around this time, and that's why they command good money. Yep, the price is on the high side but if someone wants one, they'll pay it.
This. Best USA reissues ever, by a country mile. Price is high though, but that finish is very rare.
