The picture is a screenshot from a fragment of a TV show on "Amazing Journey - The story of The Who". I could not find any good pictures of that bass and went through my DVDs to find this. I want to build a replica with that extra knob and socket.
Great find, good work fella!!!.........Doesn't have the extra knob/jack, but this is my recent tribute slab build diary; http://basschat.co.uk/topic/187288-66-slab-precision-build/ -
Rick , where are you ?
Hi Chris, What discreet said above is all I know about this. Although it's the first time I've seen a pic of the configuration. Its odd that the other jack would be there though, I always assumed, wrongly obviously, that it would be adjacent to the other one, like on a stereo Ricky?? Odd. Great pic though!!! -
Welcome fellow Northamptonian....enjoy!!!!
More info please Rick!!!
Here's mine, will be listing it shortly, just took a few pics;

I had one, sold it on here a couple of years ago, ultra light, and very narrow EB type neck. Not exactly a 4005 in my experience though...far from it in fact. Mine was a Rose Morris import, from Italy, still had the stickers on the back of the headstock.
More info please Rick!!!
It’s a Fender Custom Shop, Time Machine Series model. Absolutely Mint, I’m taking some pics at the weekend of it, but it's basically the same as this one, except its Mint, not Relic; http://www.andybabiuksfabgear.com/fender-custom-shop-60s-relic-bass-vi-guitar-3-tone-sunburst/ It has the Custom Shop black tolex case, with Limited Edition embossed lining, all the case candy, certificate etc, and is more mint than a pack of polo's. I understand from Suzy at the CS, that it is one of 99 examples made, 50 were made in various custom colours, and 49 in sunburst. It's a beaut. The Japanese ones are fetching over a grand at the moment, and they're not very 'correct' by all accounts, these custom shop time machine one's are 'proper', and very scarce, especially in the UK, and still fetch around $5000 in the US. havent really thought about price yet, need to do a bit more research on that, but will be c.£2k i would guess? Rick

Not wishing to hijack a thread, but I have a Custom Shop Bass VI, which I will be selling shortly if anyone is interested? PM me. I will be advertising it on here properly in due course, but saw this thread, and thought someone may fancy it. Rick.
Thank you all for your feedback. Especially Richard (Rick's Fine '52), who is a very knowledgeable person in the world vintage. It is a pleasure to find people like that. The jazz bass of '62 is no place on Fender's most wanted and most requested by the musicians, and it is true that you have a general tone that is unique. The nicest part is the touch, and all the sensations that gives, is unique. But my dream is to always have one of the '60, with stack control knobs, maybe it's better or not, this is to see it and try it for yourself. In this vintage world is useless to tell you things are experiences that have to be lived in the first person, and I want to see it and be able to prove myself and to compare a '62 and a 60/61, then I'll be able to decide for my which definitely stay same. Thank you very much to everyone involved and made all private messages. We are all answered and wrote in public, now comes a man from France (Toulouse) and see and try the Fender, so I will comment and if you buy it or not. This I say so, because I have many interested with their respective offers, but I am committed to await this man making a sacrifice really important, and if you come home from so far away, we really are interested in this instrument. So now I will comment if still for sale or already have it. Greetings all, and excuse my bad English, really
Always a pleasure Max, hope your man from Toulouse buys it, and you get the sale you want! Its a ridiculously fine bass. -

Here's a 3-knob (albeit slab). The one advertised on here is MUCH nicer...and much cheaper though, and hopefully this link will add to the good value this '62 is. I don't think this '62 will be available for long. http://www.chicagomusicexchange.com/bass/fender/jazz-bass/fender-jazz-bass-three-tone-sunburst-1961/ I think the price on that '61 is a little high, given the front paint damage and re-located thumbrest though. Rare nonetheless. -
Rick, is there a search engine for this kind of data? ;-)
Not to my knowledge, although I'm not very techy.....i just use my contacts, which i've built up over many years, and the usual sources, such as gbase (There's 6 stackers on gbase right now). I'm actually looking for a '61-'62 Jazz, and put the word out, so i get quite a few emails from folk, mainly in the US, with stuff thats available, and there are far more stacks than 3-knobs out there. Rick. -
For sure. Even if this is not a slab board, but one of the very first curved board Jazzies :-) Congrats, Max - you have a fine piece there. Are you sure to sell it for funding a stack knob ? Think about it ... Albert Molinari (one of the very well known Vintage Fender specialists in the world) said once ago: "FIRST Jazz basses and Prototypes had 3 KNOBS and Larger Pickups too, they decided shortly after production began to go Back to the 3 Knob version, they decided it SOUNDED better - and it DOES!"
Yep. A slab board 3 -knob is the rarest, and most desirable Jazz out there, for the purists. The stack knobs have some exlusivity about them though, which is unfounded. There are 12 stack knobs currently available on public sale, only 2 3-knobs, including this. Also, they say that around 3/4 of all stack knobs out there are cut 'n shuts?? -
There was a JV on Gumtree this week that almost doubled in value in the space of just a few days.
I know, it wasnt a first series though, and it apparently sold for more than it was worth...most odd?

OK, my two-penny-worth. Firstly, like anything, choosing something for you, is wholly subjective, as we all like, and crave different things, not just from our basses. If it was my £1500, and your looking for the best playing, feeling, and sounding P, in my experience, it would be a Fullerton '82 reissue of a '62 Precision, or a 1st series JV, if you can find an example for sale of either...they do show up. They are the best built, most vintage correct you'll find for that money, and are pretty close to the real deal. Assuming you want the vintage feel of course. They also hold their value very well, and will probably continue to increase if its a nice one. If you want a brighter, tighter feel, then buy any new..ish bass. All the new (1990 to date) Precisions I've played, do not sound, or feel like Precisions that I know, and fell in love with, they just sound like any new bass guitar....to me anyway, often down to the quality and attention to detail on the necks. Sadly, if you want the feel and sound of a genuine old Fender, then thats what you have to buy, because newer ones aren't the same.......despite what many would like to believe. As has been mentioned many times on this thread, and rightly so, you have to play as many as you can, and buy the one that suits you, and feels the nicest...to you....you never know, the one that suits you may even be a Rickenbacker 4001...in which case, there are help groups available for that! Happy hunting though, the search can often be as enjoyable as the catch, and I hope you find the bass for you, whatever that may be. Best year for me?, difficult, for various reasons, as they vary so very much, and each period has its own merits, neck profiles, neck woods, pickup arrangements etc. If I had to pick one to play for the rest of my days, it would a '58, super slim maple neck, 3-tone, gold guard, my favourite combination visually, and the warmest, softest tones ever, on the easiest neck to play.
Would of thought its more vulnerable out of the case and on a stand ! I would keep it in the case if I were him , the chances of shagging the nitro are pretty minute I would of thought !
This. I've never heard of a case lining damage a bass's finish before. Its normally when a curly lead is trapped under or on the finish for prolonged periods when the damage occurs. Keep it in the case, stop the UV attacking and fading the nitro. After this amount of time, it will be dying to crack!!
