At our last gig, I really struggled with my sound.... The pub had recently fitted a nice looking floating wooden floor! I could hardly hear a note I played all night, with any amount of EQ'ing, which is not usually the case. Anyway... Someone mentioned that squash balls, cut in half, work well as cabinet feet to help reduce mechanical coupling (which I am assuming was the problem). Any thoughts or suggestions?
http://www.juno.co.uk/products/283809-01.h...ogle%2BShopping anti vibration pads or as my friend did with his bbc monitors..hung them from the ceiling with piano wire...a bit permanent though...but not a chance of vibes escaping also a concrete block may do the necessary

Different String Gauges - Does It Make A Difference?
mrcrow replied to Linus27's topic in General Discussion
i think with those gauges it could be marginal...the lighter ones can bend better but as you get a thinner G it tends to drop off the edge 45-105 i feel is a good set although i go gaga over TI jazz rounds which are a lot less on the E side i have used lighter and heavier over the years but always came back to the 45/105 unless a speciality string was more what i wanted as opposed to a choice of gauges i cant do slap but there is a need there for lighter strings ps heavy strings dont move much and the output seems less unless you belt them that is why for me TI jazz rounds have such a good output...the vibrate a lot with less effort required your set up of course needs altering a bit for them cheers -
Thanks for the reply. So... A 250 pot will cut some highs. The cap only comes into play when the tone is rolled off.... (which I don't do either).
hi Mt T regarding the 250/500 pot thing...i havent used 500 myself and found 250...as fitted standard usually is adequate my ears arent that good to notice the difference, but others seem to think 500 is necessary on bass..i dont i run full vol..no cut..if its passive bass and still get enough..sometimes to much sizzle and clank top end i play down low mostly...well under the octave...so upper highs arent really an area i am familiar with you wont be wrong with 250 and i think you will get your standard jazz honk with them leave the cap off if you think you really dont need it...i think there may be a case that the cap can bleed highs as well some pro bass players have even dispensed with the vol and just either connected straight to the jack or fitted an on off switch if you are close to your head/combo preamp you can do changes there...

I would like my passive P to sound like my Active P
Why would it make any difference whether the batteries and pots are in the bass rather than in a pedal?
you carry the eq with you as you move around the stage and the eq is more accessible...fwiw a pedal sounds fine...i have one and just set it and leave it be...although its a sansamp bddi....i prefer any +/- eq to be right under my hand pedals just as good...just my preference -
You know, on 2nd viewing I'm really liking that.
its a good fit and uses a decent bridge where did the pups come from...not a rick surely

semi acoustic design -
despite being both single coil regardless of pole design i think the rick windings will be different fatter and shallower the positioning and power of the pups on the rick are very different from the jazz the jazz having the disadvantage of being equal pup design so giving more bias to the neck as the major output pup on the rick the bridge is the beastie with the neck just adding some sub tones it would be interesting to see if a jazz body with rick pups fitted would sound like a rick..if you could buy them the through neck aspect shouldnt be a major issue modern ricks now seem to have equally shaped and sized pups but i dont know if they are matched to give similar outputs by loading the bridge pup to balance the neck jazz pups should be matched this way as well but i have never found that...the bridge always seems lower output so to sum up campers...a jazz sounds like a jazz and a rick etc....
So I don't have "true" active EMGs, I just have EMGs and a 18V pre-amp Oh well, it sounds very good. I can make my passive bass sound quite a lot like my bass with EMGs by using pedals.
you have a more controllable and modern setup for active pups emg do an active eq knob for their active and other passive pups your pup signal will be more enhanced imho by signal enhancement via an onboard active eq thats what stingrays are and i think they are very versatile in tonal range cheers geof -
how does it compare with the old bassist mag
They are unforgiving but with a good bass and good technique they are not in the least bit sterile or untoneful. Alex
good point...you dont just strap them on and expect your bass to sound like its coming through £20,000 of recording chain mine were to sizzly for me but the bass end was THE sound i liked...perhaps pure rather than sterile would be a better description...hi fi...as my SWR combo is...and its too bright -
I know the whole pot thing has probably been done to death, but hey..... The next stage of my custom Jazz (re)build is the electrics, I think the current plate is loaded with 'no name' 500k pots. I have fitted a pair of Wizard 84's and want to fit the best pots and cap that I can, to get the full potential out of the p/ups. Should I swap over to 250k pots? .... and what cap?
fender jazz use 250k but some people use the 500k for better highs i use my bass on full vol and like nickel string sound so 250 doesnt rob me of anything i dont want anyway so a good quality 250 with 0.047 cap is the norm for the jazz and P etc passive pups i dont use tone control on the bass..passive..so a cap is a moot point hope this is of some help geof
I thought that a lot of EMG set ups were passive pups with an active pre-amp? That's what it says about my schecter. In which case, you could install them with the pre-amp in a pedal or something.
that seems to be the case nowadays initially iirc EMG meant an active pup with the preamp in the pup...sterile and hot -
It depends on the scale of the performance. I agree that visuals can make a huge difference to a gig (one of the most enjoyable bands I've ever seen live is Kiss), but Slipknot or Marilyn Manson would look pretty stupid dressed in full stage gear playing to 100 people in the function room of a hotel for a wedding reception. I've got to admit, if I ever go somewhere that has a live band playing & they come out on stage in matching outfits or suits* I head for the nearest exit. It makes me think "Grumbleweeds" or "Barron Knights" , and that makes me cringe. *Jazz combos excepted.
and the shadows
