1. I hate intermittent problems! You feel like such a spoon when it doesn't do it and the engineer is looking at it!!

The amp's been checked out and may not then be the issue...

A few questions pop into my head...

Does it happen in particular venues as compared to others or is it just all the time?
Could it be related to the venue wiring maybe?
Does your power come from a particular power reel?
Have you tried using the same power reel at home?
Do you use a power conditioner?

2. Hi,

I'm considering selling my 2007 Stingray 5, Natural, Rosewood, Tort guard, OHSC. The pickup was replaced in 2009 as a coil on the original had gone down. The replacement is also pukka EBMM and was supplied by Strings & Things and fitted by Stuart at Electromusic in Doncaster (he had to do a slight mod on the pickguard as the replacement pickup is the newer shape whereas the original ws the older shape), sounds fab, superb MM flexibility and organic mid warmth!

Would be looking for £950? or a trade for a Lakland 55-02 (natural/rosewood)...

didn't get to try the AC..??

I saw the AC on the wall, I spotted a Wal too but the one I saw was 4 string and I was looking at 5s...

Sounds like a great day out

Oh yes, I had a lovely time trying all the basses I'd been wondering about and Alex was really helpful keeping bringing me different stuff to try out, I think I tried most things in the shop!

He makes a good coffee too!

Yeah, every Lakland i've played (Only been 2 or 3 though) has been well worth the cash, and 55-01's are relatively low priced compared to some basses, and easily worth even more.

Absolutely!

I am very blessed to have worked part-time in a guitar shop for a few years while I lived at home and also had a 'proper' job so I had the opportunity to build up quite a bit of gear (at special prices) while I had no outgoings...it now means that I can trade a few bits to get something even nicer...it does also mean that trading is kinda in my blood too

That is one nice Lakland. I sometimes wish i could go in to a shop and come out with something like that, normally its a few picks or a pack of strings for me.

Thanks matey, it's very pretty! Sounds amazing too! Sooo good for the 'relatively' small price (same price as a normal 55-01).

7. So, I took my G&L L1505, Overwater/Tanglewood Aspiration 4 Elite and EBS Dynaverb to the Gallery on Saturday along with the Epifani UL112 that needed looking at and I left with...

2 x Epifani UL112 series 2 including nice padded covers
Lakland 55-01 Limited Edition Blue Burst

Happy times! Although lightweight cabs are only light feeling over short distances!

I wanted to try a Yamaha 6 string they had in to see if 6'ers would suit me at all and...they don't! I tried the Yam TRB1006 and a Warwick Streamer 6 and frankly they didn't do it for me, a whole bunch of notes 'I' don't need to play cos someone else is doing those...I mostly hold down the bottom end with a few forays up 'that' end!

I also tried:
Stingray5 - just for home comparison as I've got one at home...obviously nice enough but I was looking for a complementary yet different sound to go with it...
Lakland 55-01 - shockingly nice for the money!
Overwater Tanglewood Contemporary Jazz 5 - ok but nothing to excite me
Sadowsky UV70-RW-5 - simply stunning! feel and sound! utterly lovely! Way too expensive for this month though!
Warwick Streamer 5 - same old same old, slightly sticky baseball bat neck etc
Fender USA Jazz 5 Deluxe - dull, fat slow neck, nothing special at all
Sei Jazz 5 - nice, very nice, but not as nice 'wow' as I was expecting, sounded good though!
Dingwall 5 - kinda fun, felt dizzy looking down accross the frets, fingerboard felt a bit cheap and unfinished
Spector 5 - beautiful looking but not that exciting sounding
Yamaha TRB1005 - fairly nice but not a patch on the Lakland

All tried through the shop's Randy Jackson Mark Bass valve head and a schroeder 4x10 I think it was...I have to say everything sounded way nicer through my Epi cabs when we were testing those!

So, having tried just about every 5 string in the shop I brought the Lakland home while lusting after a Sadowsky one day!

i really want this, cant afford it!

lets see if i can sell stuff quick enough to fund it!

how are the lows on this? ill only be using it as a power amp anyway really if i get it
It's a valve preamp witha digital power amp so if you're just using the power amp rather than combining it with the pre I've no experience of doing that, would suggest you try one out first?

More and more these days, sadly; seems that a phantom switch per channel is solely the preserve of four-figure+ professional units now :)

Reading into it, I guess it's only an issue if your phantom regulating resistors are out, which condensers wouldn't be all that bothered by but which'd cause a d.c current through a transformer-less dynamic capsule; I was under the impression that removing the transformer would essentially unbalance the mic as the transformer centre-tap would be earthed, but apparently only the mic body is connected to earth.

Ignore me, it's been a long week :)
all good, I've had one too!

:)

A real mod, I would imagine, to be implemented only by eejits; you're right, phantom power will then be shorted across the capsule which would likely cause damage to the mic and /or the desk's phantom supply. Unless I'm missing something...but I'm sure I'm not (I came across a cheap Chinese fake 58 last year which had no transformer at all, wouldn't use it for that reason...)
Actually, the phantom power issue is not technically proven, I do know someone who has done this and he is well pleased with the results...

I guess some noddy desks have phantom power on or off for the whole desk but generally it shouldn't be an issue...

Thanks Bassace. I don't own the Stagg anymore as I was spending more time on fretless. To start again, would it be better to pick up a 2nd hand Steinberger or not spend the extra and pick up a second hand Stagg? I have read some horror stories regarding the Stagg in terms of build quality. Thankfully our one was fine. I think you can pick up a Steinberger for aroung £400 second hand.

I got my NXT for £450, I added a fishman platimun pro preamp and reckon it sounds close enough to my mates orchestral double bass when recorded that I'm happy with it

"What are popular mods for the SM57 (also works for SM58)
Remove the transformer. This is a 15-minute mod that was described in detail in the Mar/Apr 2006 issue (#52) of TapeOp; essentially, use boiling water or a heat gun to soften the glue holding the transformer in the bottom half of the mic body (note: do not boil the capsule), then connect the wires from the XLR jack straight to the capsule
This mod is reported to extend the frequency range of the mic, especially at the low end. It reduces the midrange honk. Some modders claim it improves transient response. However, it lowers the mic’s output by about 10dB (perhaps making it unsuitable for quiet sources)."
