Cleaned up the neck and headstock and did the rough neck shaping. I need to finalise the shape, but at least most of the wood is removed.

I am back to thoroughly hating my router. No major upset thankfully, but I had a kick whilst trimming my neck and darn well nearly took a chunk out..... luckily I literally just grazed the wood so it will sand out. Not much to show as I only rough cut the neck and still need to trim the sides properly, but I guess I can show you the trussrod and carbon rods installed.

It is larger than normal, something like a 1x1 cm, sizeable but manageable. It is hard to give you “proper” advice, but myself I would not be thinning more than a few mm.

Forgot to snap pics..... but thinned the neck to the right dimensions, routed the slots for carbon fibre rods and truss rod. Time is still tight at the moment, but at least we a still slowly moving forward.

The neck finish I understand is a mix of melted wax and lemon oil. These are readily available and it should therefore not be an issue to redo the neck after thinning. And indeed, different grits and steel wool. Wrt how much you can reduce depends on several factors and I would take it slow. You can always reduce more, never less. Do you have a picture if the neck? If it is a 1995 I imagine this is the rather large slide in trussrod, which actually limits how much you can thin the neck quite a bit. A couple mm max.

I feel you ..... great tool, but you know they will bite you on occasion. Absolutely great build mate, I am well impressed.

Had half an hour, so cleaned up the neck blank I made. Looking rather good. I do need to reduce thickness still, but the glue up is pretty much perfect in any case.

Exactly! I have to admit I at the time was not a fan. But the fact he made a video to explain why/how especially for us and the way he conducted himself made me change my mind. You do not become that successful online without playing the online marketing game I now understand and Scott showed himself to be a true gent. He has my blessing (not that he needs it).

Yes, I use if for our Faithless Tribute. Works really well in a few songs, especially for that swirly filter thing. It is pretty “specific”, but what it does it does well.

Unfortunately time is going to be in short supply the next weeks. But we’ll get there. Still a bit bummed out that my 5 piece was much heavier than planned, but since this bass is for me it needs to be max 4kg.

So as per the above, the weight of my 5 piece was concerning, so I have reverted to my original plan, maple neck with wenge centre. Not as beautiful, but better in weight and I think it should work well for fretless with an epoxied (or CA finished) wenge fretboard.

Funny that you say this.... for me weight is an issue. I’ve weighed it and I am changing configuration 2 cm quartersawn wenge centre and 2 maple sides. Still giveS me the warmth of the wenge (also have a wenge fretboard) and makes it much lighter. The 5 piece Config will be used elsewhere. Not as “sexy”, but my back will thank me.

I order it from Portugal, slow sometimes but the wood is always very good. Interestingly I asked for 10cm wide, but they sent 12cm wide. I may go with a flat sawn Wenge centre, Maple Quarter sawn strips and then quarter sawn sides. More than enough wood.
