1. Bought an EBS Octabass pedal from Steve. Bargain price, great to deal with, kept me informed at all times, well packaged, and arrived exactly on time as stated. Top marks. Cheers, Pete.
2. Bought an EBS TD650 from G Major on Saturday......so...... Merry Christmas to me, Merry Christmas to me, etc.etc.
3. Come to think of it......Talk Talk - It's My Life.......fantastic bass line and very much the lead instrument for me.
4.
A great line or... as it actually is, two! and nicely played by Herbie Flowers I think
Aye.....t'is that. One on upright, one on electric. Probably one of the most famous bass lines of all time.
5.
Bernadette - The Four Tops
In fact, an awful lot of James Jamerson's work..... For Once In My Life - Stevie Wonder Reach Out I'll Be There - Four Tops Darling Dear - Jackson 5 Road Runner - Junior Walker and the All Stars etc. etc.
6.
I agree with all of that.... except I wouldn't go so far as calling G Major a tool though, interesting or otherwise.
Doh! Never spotted that wording. Maybe worthy of an edit!
7. I suppose when I'm practicing, I tend to play mostly over the bridge pickup (Marcus Miller Jazz). But as I play in a covers band, I move my position depending on what the song requires, plus I'll use a plectrum. As I've also left the neck pickup cover on for aesthetic reasons, I'll either play in front or behind the cover again depending on what the song requires.
8. I can't recall whether I visited Bassworld or not, and have only recently (in the past few months) signed up to Basschat, so I have no idea of the history of it all. What I can say in the short time I've used this, I've found a lot of it very useful. I've found some interesting ideas towards playing. practicing, etc. I've had some very thoughtful answers to a thread I started about covers bands and/or original bands. Yesterday, I even met up with G Major to buy an amp from him. So in a very short time, I've found this a very useful and interesting tool. So for some of the more regular users that were part of Bassworld to think it's not worth signing on is a real shame. Lots of people like myself must be signing up to Basschat on a regular basis, and I'm sure the majority of them are not of the persuasion to use "HATE" etc. about styles of music, playing, types of basses, or even particular artists. I hold some very strong opinions about music, but I'd like to believe that I can put those opinions across in a reasoned way. I'm also prepared to let someone try and convince me otherwise. There are styles of music I'm not keen on, there are artists I don't like, but I won't say I hate it/them, I suppose I just don't understand it/them. So to dismiss an entire community because of a few extreme views is a little over the top.
9. I absolutely love Melbourne. Got a brother-in-law that lives in Mooroolbark, and the wife's cousin lives in Lilydale. Oh to up sticks and be granted a residential visa! I always said that if I got the opportunity to emigrate, it'd be there. We'd probably sell everything to help finance the move, but my bass gear would have to move with me. Gotta earn a buck or two somehow
10. Bought an EBS TD650 head off Alex today. I drove from Manchester, him from London, and we met at Coventry. Went out of his way to help me. Great bloke to deal with, and would have no hesitation recommending him to anyone. Cheers once again Alex.
11.
Check out Bobby Vega on Bassplayer tv.
Man, that's opened my eyes. That's some serious playing. And come to think of it, it makes perfect sense. Most "funky" guitarists use plectrums, so why not bass players? Gives a completely different definition to the sound than fingers only. And that Jazz of his could tell a few stories!
12.
Is that guy very tall or does he have a small bass and tiny guitarists?
Ha ha ..... a bit of everything I think
13. Used to a cover of Average White Band's "Cut The Cake". Great track, not a difficult bass line, but funky as hell. I'd never thought of "funky" players playing with plectrums before (as I played it with my fingers), but this proves me wrong. 14.
Stage direction is a big part of it..... I play in three bands..... two of which are playing functions.... one band is pure funk/disco the other is more party type music.... but for both we have stage direction. Both bands are upbeat and the aim is to keep people on the dance floor all night.... and we do..... it's very important and it keeps the punters very happy and thats what its all about really.... If your being hired in by a large corporation to play at their summer ball or xmas celebration then they want to make sure they are gonna have a good party. Nothing worse than having a band stop after every song..... try extending songs.... try medley's .... just keep the people on the dance floor and you'll be guaranteed a re-book.
I play in a covers band. This year has gone rather well......starting to get bookings directly through our website from people that've never even heard us before, etc. We're always looking for ways to improve the band, whether that's material, stage presence, or just general attitude. The big no no for me is leaving too much of a gap between songs......regardless of the reason. We recently did a Xmas party for a large company, and the drummer's bass skin split about 3 songs into the set. We just got the DJ to fill in for a couple of minutes, whipped it off, put half a roll of gaffer tape on the split, put it back on, and started playing again. That kept everyone up. Then in the second set, the guitarist leaves a gap of about 5-10 seconds inbetween two songs to make a minute adjustment to his sound. And it feels like an hour to me. Rather than make the adjustment, just go with it and keep them dancing. I can't bear even the tiniest of gaps.....because it's enough to let them walk off the dancefloor.
15.
im seeing bernie on friday, i could ask him
That'd be greatly appreciated. Cheers for that.
16. That's exactly the same as the first serious bass I bought when I started working after leaving school. Same wood, black scratchplate, etc. I look at that now, and it makes me absolutely sick to the pit of my stomach that I let it go! Beautiful instrument. Well done.
17. I really love the Marcus Miller Jazz I bought this year, and use it as my main bass now, but I suppose I'd have to go with my Warwick Thumb 5 string, as I've had it since brand new around 15-20 years ago. I doubt I could ever sell it, let alone have it burn!
18. My Fender Jazz Marcus Miller Signature and my Warwick Thumb 5 thru-neck I also own a Warwick Streamer 4 string (thru-neck) in cherry finish and a 1976 black Fender Precision with maple neck.
19.
Sound Control are EBS dealers - although wether they have any on demo is something else. You should have gone to Bass Day.
I did, but sadly each time I got near it, it was being hogged! I really should learn to be more forceful (maybe I should be a guitarist instead!)
