With that sort of budget, why not try the Ampeg PF500 (or newer PF800) which weigh about 5kg and fit in a laptop bag, through a lightweight cab. I'm going to suggest a Barefaced cab - but not easy to try-before-you-buy as they are sourced direct from the manufacturer. However, they do have a one month trial option, and if it wasn't to your liking you would sell the cab on here in less than an hour. Downside is the current lead-time for delivery. Alternatively, there are other lightweight cabs available - I see GK have recently released an updated version of their MBE range. Your budget will get you some quality lightweight gear. That's a real shame. Any chance of getting your money back? If you are still looking for a small but decent practice amp, I'd recommend looking around for a used Roland Cube 30 Bass. I've had one for a few years and it is phenomenal in terms of build, sound and volume. It also has several amp models, some effects and a compressor. You can run an MP3 through it, and use headphones too. Highly recommended, although proably a bit pricier than the Warwick. Cheers Geoff

I've ordered cabs, amps and widgets from Thomann, but not a bass. However, the experience has always been good. I've also used their returns policy which is also rather efficient.

I use a Boss LMB-3. It can do anything from gentle compression up to hard limiting, and I find the threshold to be a very useful range. The Behringer is a fairly good clone of the LMB, it seems to sound pretty much the same, but with a plastic body. If you can pick up a s/h LMB for about £30 or £40 it will be worthwhile, and will last forever. And if you decide you don't like it you will get your money back by selling it on here. Also, with the compression ratio set to 1:1 (no compression at all), it can be used as a booster. Cheers Geoff
