They probably couldn't make the headstock too Thunderbird-y for legal reasons. Gibson aren't quite as trigger happy as Rickenbacker but they've got form. I don't have a problem with the headstock, or the tuners.

Have any reformed bands made a really great album?
neepheid replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
would "brave new world" by iron maiden count? it wasn't a reformation as such but did mark the return of adrian smith and bruce dickinson and turned out to be a pretty darn good album
I was tempted to say the same with exactly the same proviso -
Try different types/shapes of plectrum? I don't play pick often, back in the dim and distant past I was having a stab at playing guitar and I remember these: http://www.reidys.com/pr/guitar-accessories/rhm-plectr-o-sample-pack-1532/ Hole in the middle might make things better, or maybe make things worse!
As usual I seem to be the only person that's come across this problem
Is it the combo or the bass which is picking up the interference? Keep the combo where it is, and play the bass far away from the iMac? Have you tried leaving the combo physically where it should be but getting the power from somewhere else in the house (like where you plugged it in and had no trouble) via an extension cable? Just trying to get a handle on whether or not the problem is coming through the mains or through the air. Dunno what that means but I'd spray permutations at the problem to try and narrow it down.

Perhaps I should mention more prominently in future communications that we're reliable, sound check quickly and get off stage quickly when we're done - from what you're saying that's almost more important than the music!
i've always found it easier to go to the promoter or the venue directly... that or book my own gigs. i've never relied on an advert to attract gig interest
Aye, if the f'kers ever get back to you. I for one am getting real tired of being ignored and I'm not assertive enough to do the repeat emailing, just think we must be crap and I don't want to pester them further. Does nothing to dispel the perception that certain cities are like little private clubs, and unless you know someone, you won't even get a first look before your email gets deleted. Either that or as I previously alluded to, we're actually crap.

If you have to sell one of them - tricky. If you have time I would definitely take that time to weigh things up. You should take both to a band rehearsal and A/B them in the same sitting so you can make an informed decision. I would say don't listen to what other people say about the looks etc. - it's not their bloody bass! Base your findings on important stuff like how it sounds, how it feels to play and how you feel about the looks. If the Bongo wins (I only mention this because it is the newcomer and the underdog), then you know what to do - keep sentiment out of it and go with the winner. Sentimentality doesn't make a bass sound or feel better, except in our heads.
Touché Are you saying it's not a wasteland up there?
The words "frozen" and "wasteland" often go together, but I assure you it's only frozen at the moment.

What do you do when you've found The One?
neepheid replied to Skinnyman's topic in General Discussion
-1 I play the same ham fisted, club fingered way on all my basses EDIT +0.5 My Gibson Victory Artist inspires me to stay still while I'm playing more than the others because it weighs the same as a small moon. -
The reverse split P always made sense to me if I didn't think too deeply about it - if what I think is true that in general, the further from the bridge the pickup is, the "bassier" it is. Fatten up the D and G a little and calm the E and A a little - but is it any better balanced than before? Maybe it's worse! Maybe it's all a lot of nonsense, of course - people hear what they want to hear sometimes...

I suspect some people make up these tabs when they're nowhere near an instrument - as long as it's the right note, that'll do.

If your friend put the power wires directly onto the battery and it played fine then why would there be a problem with the preamp? Don't worry about it until the battery is back in a properly wired up battery compartment.
Is there a safe option for posting without a hard case? Couriers chuck things around so carelessly don't they?
Yes, put it in a gig bag (or double box it) and pack it well with soft stuff like bubble wrap, air bags, foam, even scrunched up newspaper. Surround the bass completely with the packing materials. Pack it tightly enough that nothing moves when the box is shaken, but not so full that you risk bursting the box. Use good parcel tape. Use a good courier - I've sent many basses successfully using UPS via Interparcel (Interparcel's Economy/Standard/Premium services).

It's bogus, mate, it's got no strings for starters! Only kidding, I have nothing useful to add.

Amateur band music scene in Northern Ireland (and a bit of rant)
neepheid replied to IBWT's topic in General Discussion
Can't help you with Belfast-y advice, but here in the frozen northern fortress of Aberdeen, I have never used any of those find a band websites. All bands I've been in have been organically grown* by good old fashioned luck, circumstance, talking to people, networking, hearing about opportunities, going for them. I think working behind the bar in a music venue helped - got to meet some of the contributors to the local scene long before I got properly involved. * I did once use Gumtree to look for a singer, we got one guy who we auditioned but passed on. -
It's an SB-300 which has been customised a bit (neck pickup changed, three point bridge added instead of the original which was rather flimsy with soft saddles, looks like it has been defretted and refinished) Optimistic price, considering it's not a particularly sought-after model and with the modifications.

Agreed - on Friday I gigged to about 20 folk. But they were all dancing around like lunatics, so it felt like 200 and I had a great time
-
Stories are everywhere, and they don't have to have anything to do with the size of the venue, the number of people there or the illustriousness of the rest of the bill.

Backup Gear - Anyone take a spare cab with them?
neepheid replied to Lozz196's topic in General Discussion
No. Suppose I'm being "unprofessional" -
That is exactly what happens to us, there is a set list which the guitarist usually ignores, and often calls one song then plays another, while our harp guy (who's is rather deaf) is asking what key it's in...and somehow lip reads E as G or D. Somehow we haven't gone completely off the rails on stage yet, and I quite like the confused spontaneity of it all.
This would do my nut in.

I ditched my separates for one of these: I don't understand the witchcraft employed in making something this small sound as good as it does, and I'm OK with that
