1. http://janekgwizdala.bandcamp.com/album/it-only-happens-once here ya go Bilbo. From what I've heard from other people they feel the same, ie that the albums lacks melody and interest... I just found it an unusual release because so many of Janeks instructional videos he is talking about playing melodically, developing themes etc, but he rarely explores these ideas on this album.
2. I felt that about his last album, that the live versions he had being doing of the songs were much better than what ended up being presented on the album. I was actually involved in the recording of one of his gigs in Edinburgh but it didn't end up getting released due to the fact that Jojo was off his face on something, dropping sticks and beats! I felt there were some questionable performances from him on this album too....!
3. I've tried but just can't get into Janek's new album. On top of that I feel rather let down that this is what he has released. I understand the concept of spontaneous creation in the studio and picking players you hope will contribute to the project in a unique way and with today's technology the ability to play with things in post production can be really eye opening. However, the album really does sound like a jam, a cool jam, but a jam nonetheless. There are no real melodies or hooks, very few interesting basslines and a general lack of compositional ingenuity. I say this because Janek has so often spoke about the importance of melody and such like but seems to have forgotten about it with this offering. I was also disappointed with the lack of natural bass tones and solos from janek. He seems to have hidden away behind a wall of fx in the hope that this makes it different enough to be interesting. Not for me. And I love bass effects, but when they're used all the time, they lose their impact. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Janek hater by any means, I really respect him for what he's done for the online community and he is undoubtably a fantastic musician and businessman. I just feel that he has pulled a fast one on us with this album, I was really expecting a lot more than what he offered. What do you guys think? It's possible this is exactly the album Janek wanted to make and this is just how his musical voice has evolved, it's also possible it was an experiment that didn't quite work out... Please, I'm not here to start a fight, I'm looking for an open, thoughtful discussion.
4. To be honest the whole thing smelled like a rip off right from the start. They were touting the exact same articles and interviews available in other online bass mags and sites, but asking for money. I couldn't believe it when I visited the preview then to go further I had to pay. Ludicrous. I think people either want forums or site like bass musician magazine, no treble etc or they want a hard copy like bass player mag. Can anyone tell me if iBass had adverts in it as well? Cheers
5. Yeah! I first saw Dane warming up for the Vic Wooten clinic in Melbourne, Vic cam out and started asking Dane how to do stuff!! I've saw him a few more times since and apart from being incredibly humble, he is just a killer musician. There are coupla new vids going around with him and fellow Aussie Mark Peric (also frighteningly good) jamming with Damian Erskine at NAMM this year. Dane is also featured on Troy Roberts new album Nu Jive.
6. That is some tight ass playing man!! Well done, awesome tone, time and technique, the three T's! Good to see a fellow Epifani user too, I just got my rig and I'm blown away. Keep up the good work! C
7. Just came across this glowing review of Andy's debut album. http://www.bassplayersunited.com/2012/02/album-review-andy-saxton-evolution-of-the-thumb-2/ Well deserved I think! Hats off to you buddy! C
8. Excellent piece of music from a great musician!
9. Cheers guys! Did they really do Kind of Blue from start to finish in less than 9 hours?! Hats off to them!
10. Hey here is the proper link, http://soundcloud.com/stonecoldbass/mama-told-me-by-the-depot-funk-family let me know what y'all think! C
11. Hey people, I have just moved to Vancouver BC and after searching Craigslist I have two possibilities for buying a rig. One is a mint condition Epifani UL 502 with a series 1 ul210 and a series 2 UL15 The rig is in showroom condition with footswitch, rack case ad protective speaker covers. I can have it all for $1600 Other option is an all valve Traynor YB 200 with matching 210 and 115 Again, minto condition but I haven't had much experience with this company I can have the whole rig for $900 They are obviously 2 very different rigs and both great deals. The best rig I have ever owned was an Epifani 410 and an Aguilar DB750 so I'm defo a fan of Epifani. However that was a monster valve head, the 502 is a different beast. However, I have been using an Avalon U5 for around a year as a pre amp into and GB Shuttle 6 and was happy with the sound, and as far as I can tell the 502 is like a U5 with good EQ. And with a $700 price difference it's hard to decide! So basically, all valve goodness or insane pristine solid state power... Any help?!?
12. Check it out people!! This was pretty much written, recorded and mixed all in the space of 9hrs at the Depot Recording studio in Leith. It was such a pleasure to create great music with some old friends and make some new ones in the process. Download it, stream it, share it, dance to it! Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it. http://soundcloud.co...-the-depot-funk Bass was Lakland DJ 5 into Avalon U5 with and Ampeg 410 and Classic SVT head. Let me know what you think! Craig
13. I know what you mean, but I ask you: in what context was he playing? Was he just jamming away with no backing or was he with a band? I have learned to reserve judgement on players until I hear them in a few musical situations. It could well be that in a band he lays down a deep, tasteful slap pocket and on the occaision you saw him he was just 'chopping'. We are all guilty of it, and it's not a bad thing. It's hard to play 'for the chords' etc when it's just you!
i was with a guy earlier whos been playing bass for a while, that i had a conversation with about bass playing.... he started talking about slap playing.. he showed me his slap chops.. he was very talented in (what i call) a slap show case.. basically a slap riff that is repeated over a few bars...... i didnt want to be a dick and show him some slap wisdom.. as i couldnt.. but i know what is musical, and what is musical is really for the chords, feeling and timing.. it should be engrained in anyone taking up bass.. imo....' make sure you play for the music' ... i said maybe he should learn how to turn that great technique into something fantastic like reading music or.. i dont think he wanted to take it that far.. there is so much to be said about the musical approach to slap and i know its very obvious to some more experienced guys/girls, but i come across people who think its some sort of vehicle to attract attention... he was great doing his thing, seriously, he was amazing in his speed and note definition, he really blew me away, but missing the point is very easy when the ego is involved.. there is no right or wrong, but there is music and its boundries.. like i said this is obvious to lots, but not to others
14.
They're one of these bands who I'm sure I'd like but have never really listened to...keep meaning to pick up some albums but they all seem quite expensive given how long they've been out for...
Beacause the older music gets... the less valuable it is?!?!
15. Awesome! I wonder what the disappearance was all about...? I swear by my DJ5 with j retro, killer bass.
16. Hey folks, Here's what I got up to whilst confined to the house during the terror that was hurricane bawbag! Gonna work on this one a bit more to flesh out the chord harmony, but really happy with the groove and melody etc; http://soundcloud.com/stonecoldbass/purple-reign-1 Cheers! C
17. I recommend buying the CD from the record company website, ropeadope records. Not only do you get a lovely, Hi Fidelity CD for your cash, but you get a DVD with the making of on it and for $5 you get a cool ass T shirt! Sometimes old school is new school...or something C
18. If that '20 minute song' is powerful enough to connect with enough people to enable them to reap millions for the rest of their life then I think they are entitled to it!! Who can put a value on the creative ability to connect with people? Like you say it's the audience that puts the value to a piece of music, so the time spent on creating it is irrelevant. I'm sure countless songs have been conjured up in minutes, and equally some songs take an age. It doesn't make one more or less valuable.
19. I mostly agree with you but I think 'the whole point' is that we need to STOP recorded music turning into a promotional tool! We shouldn't just accept that nobody buys CDs etc anymore and we should be looking to fund ways in which if we like music, we pay for what we consume. You can't say that's not fair. Why should an artist spend days/weeks/months/years slaving to craft and create the best possible presentations of his music in a recorded format only for people to view it as a free business card? I believe there are equal amounts of worth and creativity in recorded music as there are in live performances. As for Spotify I agree with Steve that they should be much more transparent with the amounts and ways in which people get paid. Then as consumers we can make informed choices about how we wish to consume the music we listen to: either free streaming, paid downloads, paid streaming or actual physical items! C
I'm not sure if I entirely understand why Steve has taken his music off Spotify - the precise difference between the low payout per stream (which he doesn't object to) and the role of the majors in dictating the payout policy (which he does object to) is maybe a bit too subtle for me. I have a few musician friends who rail against Spotify because of the tiny revenues per stream and I can understand - on a gut level - why they'd prefer people to consume their music in a different, more profitable (for them) way. But surely the whole point here is that recorded music is no longer an inherently profitable part of the business - it now exists as a loss-leading promotional tool to get punters to come and see you play live which is where you earn money. If that's the case, surely the most important thing is that your music is as widely available online as it can be, regardless of the comparatively low income that may generate.
20. Yeah I'm a massive fan of them too. For me it's incredible how tightly orchestrated it all is but never sounds cluttered. And just huuuge grooves. Makes me smile
21. Nice work mate! good to hear some funk/fusion up here north of the border! Great players too. C
this was my friends drum exam that i played for. he's a f******g beast on the kit!, check out his cover of tiempo de festival on youtube
22. I went last year as well it is an amazing show! The guy is 60 odd and he plays for two hours solid. Non stop good time groove and entertainment from a man who is a true legend of the bass. I urge as many of you to go and see it just to witness how musical the man is.
