1. Thanks guys! Jake - Yeah I experimented with playin the G and Ab up on the B string but found the tonal difference too noticeable. Plus I kinda liked the challenge of fitting it all in! Fatgoogle here's the link to the original thread where I got the PDF http://basschat.co.uk/topic/175450-anthony-jackson-clip/
2. Hey guys So after getting that PDF to work I set to work trying to get the 1st section of this tune down. Here's a decent take I did, some of the runs are still a little bit sloppy due to rearranging them for 5-string fingering. It's great to get my teeth into something exciting again and I'll hopefully get the whole tune finished in a few weeks. Let me know what you think! PS looks and sounds pretty cool in 1080p! 4. Cool! 1hr and 17mins, basically the whole gig! That's my Sunday evening sorted then...
5. Hey guys, posted this in the Bass Guitar section, but so far no luck so decided to stick it here in case it's gets more attention. Hello people! I bought this bass around 10 years ago from a music store in Glasgow, Scotland. It was my first foray into playing a 5 string so I wasn't wanting to spend a lot of money on it in case we didn't get on. I saw this hanging on the wall and thought it looked like a pretty nice bass, obviously a Warwick inspired design. I plugged it in (it was active) and although the neck felt a bit a bit chunky it sound pretty cool. The name on the headstock says 'Ventura', the guy in the shop said it was a prototype for a new line they were considering getting in. I played it all through Uni, and it has quite a grunty Warwick-y type tone. I guess the store never got the line in because I never saw any basses with that name in there again. I got it defretted about 6 months ago and the guy also thinned down the neck a bit which makes it way more playable. I also ripped out the active electronics so it's now just got 2 volumes and a tone control and sounds fantastic! So my question is, can anyone tell me anything about this bass or the company?? I have tried extensive google searches but nothing really turns up. Does anyone else on here own one?? I've attached some pics and an mp3 of the bass. 6. The way he makes it sound so easy! Yes he doing what a lot of pros can do, that's coz he is one. But I think listening to it you still know its AJ, those cascading descending runs are very typical I his playing. So not only is he supporting bad drive a huge ensemble, he still manages to put his unique audio stamp on it. I'd say what more could you want from a big name pro player??

8. I'm curious what album this is from? I have it on the One More Once album but it's a slightly longer and different arrangement, also it's a tad slower...
9. Ah yeah got it to work by telling it to open with Adobe. I have a Mac and it doesn't seem to recognise that as a PDF file for some reason. Sweet, off to the shed!!
10. Yeah there is no questioning AJs skills! Stevie Glasgow and Johnny Copland have a great bunch of his transcriptions. I would love to have a go at Not Yet Phil, but that link you have there doesn't seem to work...?
11. http://soundcloud.com/stonecoldbass/lush-featuring-pw-farrell A tune I've been working on for while that the supremely talented PW Farrell took the time to lay down a mean-ass bass solo on. Still a work in progress but thought I would share the music just now anyway!
12. Aren't you using EZ Drummer as a plug-in in garageband? that way you can just use the midi grooves from ez drummer and loop them for as long as you want...
13. I see he has juts posted another reply on Talkbass. It's very obvious that he has been keeping a keen eye on what people have been saying on this thread too. Hey janek thanks for taking the time to reply.
14. Yeah, I feel this thread spiraled slightly off topic but that's ok, all in the name of open discussion etc. I respect that Janek never shies away from encounters like this, in fact he seems like to make a big deal of them (if you have read any of his blogs you may have come across various 'fan mail' pieces...) and his plan to make that thread into a blog post is no different. The only thing however, is that he didn't address one single point I made in my (albeit lengthy) reply to him about his album and listening to music. He decided to use it as a jumping off point to talk about 'trimming off dead weight' and the state of the 'four walled bedroom youtube commenter'. I know what he is getting at, you see it all the time on both of these forums, but that has nothing to do with my OP. I kinda feel like he 'changed the subject' away from discussion of his album and subsequently how we perceive and admire musical worth to a bit of a rant at the 'online bass micro community'. I was not comparing him to Matt or Hadrien, I don't hide behind screen names (you can visit my homepage and see what I do from my sig) and I 'get' subtlety in music. But I suppose he must get soooo much of the comparison thing happening that he felt he had to address it. I'm still trying to get into the album btw.... There are good moments for sure, but that's it. An album of frameworks that have some good bits in them. And some not so good bits. Which is TOTALLY COOL! It's exactly the music he wanted to make and he stands behind it, but he almost said it himself that his live shows are way better than his studio albums, maybe that is what separates the good from the great: being able to convey equally powerful and honest music both live and in the studio....
15. Scott Henderson also played in Chick Coreas Elektrik band.
16. Glad you guys like the discourse going on over there! I think there are threads like that here, but all too often they devolve into 'this guy is better','I don't like his tone' or 'he bores me' threads, when actually the root of the discussion is much deeper than that. I'm just really glad I managed to get a response from Janek and have the chance to respond. I guess that is both the blessing and the curse of these forums 'they're open to everyone an everyone can contribute and say what they like...' it's a double edged sword.
17. Hey guys, Here is that link for Talkbass http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f19/janeks-new-album-870390/ Check out the replies!
18. Yeah i hear you man! I think beneath it all is honesty as well as conviction, they go hand in hand. And I suppose you're right in terms of composition sharing the principles as an improvisation. I haven't seen the scott henderson vid but vic wooten does the same thing where he plays a solo using only the 'right notes' but bad timing, phrasing, dynamics, tone etc; then he plays one with all the 'wrong' notes but the rhythmic conviction and mastery of the other elements makes it sound so right.
19. Hey guys, you might want to check out Janek's reply to the post I put up over on Talkbass, interesting response. I have replied as well but still waiting to see what he has to say. Healthy discussion all round! I'm kinda glad it didn't turn into a 'this player is much better than that player' discussion...as has kinda happened here
20. Great stuff P-Dubs! In the video you say basing your solo on the melody is key, but at the end you say that basing your lines on rhythmic patterns is also key... I guess the ultimate is then rhythmic patterns based off the melody?? Can't wait for the next one!
21. This is Hadrian playing with fire...
22. There's nothing wrong with making albums that differ greatly from each other, however each has to be judged on its own musical merits and I feel this latest one falls short on many accounts...
23. Hey Chris, I agree pretty much with everything you've said. There just doesn't seem to be the fire that guys like Hadrian or Matt have. I've been really enjoying Tony Greys music lately, he seems to meld the groove mentality of playing bass with electronica and melodicism in a really listenable way. I'm not sure about the creative bankruptcy thing though, check out my friend Pat Farrell from Australias album here: http://pwfarrell.bandcamp.com/album/the-life-electric An obvious student of Willis and Garrison yet with his own distinctive and honest voice. And all self produced.
