2. Steve Berry is up that way.....
3.
I came up with the bare bones of something for this last night... I was fairly pleased with it however I've just realized that it has the EXACT same rhythm as one of my other pieces. Totally different tonality but an identical plucking pattern.
Never bothered Steve Harris
4.
Can't wait to hear/see? your next entry, Rob! I'm trying to create my own composition this month, but being pretty much limited to midi instruments and also being an absolute beginner at programming midi instruments, and know very little theory other than what's relevant to guitar or bass, this make take a long long time, and still sound absolutely crap. Also, most the midi instruments just sound like a piano that sounds a bit like a bass, or a guitar. They don't actually ever sound like a bass or a guitar.
All theory is relevant to guitar or bass...
5. Wow. I only missed two so that's 8 compositions plus the onesI do for my trio. I am prolific
6. Played with Jim Mullen last night. Great playing butended gig with a splitting headache that stayed there until this morning!
7. Skol, urb, donnie and the lady who sang.
8. I have several cds of Jarrett's on my ipod and some are absolutely works of genius. But some of it seems to be pointless. A bit like a photographer who prints everything rather than one who selects the best image. I downloaded Jarrett's Sun Bear Concerts, 6 cds of improvisation. In some ways it is great, in others, interminable. I love his Still Live LP (I have it on vinyl, the European Quartet stuff with Jan Garbarek, etc, ), some of his 70s stuff is ok. What do others think?
9. I have two Says it all.
10. What is apparant, to me at leadt, is evidence to support the old idea that creating great music is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. I can't find more than 2 or three hours a month to spend on this whilst others spend more or less depending on circs. The results are probably commensurate.
11. I scored 81.1%. I lost a bit of ground because I was late with one set of peer assessment. I recommend the experience to anyone who wants to learn the basics of improvisation.
12. Interesting to hear it 'dry'. Actually sounds easier than it does in the actual 'Graceland' track.
13. You don't need a bass book. Go to a charity shop and get any book on music theory and then transfer the information to the bass. It'll cost you £1
14. Done... I gotta vote! Go me!
15.
Have you listened to the others..?
One or two. Will get to the others today.
16.
You were in my final two.
Damn! Should've added a backbeat!
17. You guys just don't get me, do you?

20. Start with Jamey Aebersold playalongs. Google it.
21. At the end of the day, all of the theory in the world won't make great music. 'Knowing' what notes you can play won't tell you what notes you should play; that is what makes you you and not a computer programme. I remember discussing the study of comnposition with someone who had already studied it at university and he said that the teaching offers you techniques and processes you can use but, fundamentally, the ideas that define the composition were as elusive to him as they are to me. It is the same with theory. I know loads of stuff but making a great solo work is still hard.
22. Everyone grows out of metal eventually. It is just that some people die first.
23. I don't disagree with what you say but would suggest that reliance solely on either method is potentially problematic. The ear only works if the ear is educated, rather like the mouth I hear a lot of fledgling jazzers over-relying on pentatonics that 'nearly' fit. Their ear can't hear the detail in the harmonies so it lets them down. But, yes. You are fundamentally correct.
24.
How long do we have to wait for the paperback edition?
I haven't the faintest idea
25. Reviewed by Brian Priestley in Jazzwise magazine. Some legitimate criticisms but also some welcome positives. Happy to be part of the debate. If someone writes a better bio, I will be first to buy a copy
