1. Not a bad outcome really, and if you buy enough second-hand gear the the good balances out with the bad in the long term. Anyway, once you get the cab working it'll make it easier to forget about the money spent.
2. Non-UK viewer, so had to look this up on YT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9gvJGBydRY
3. Difficult situation, but you need to find a speaker that matches the cab, not be looking at retuning the cab IMHO - at least, how would you do that without getting into running a lot of calculations, fiddling with the ports, and even then the cab size is fixed and the result might be suboptimal. What about contacting Fender Ireland / UK and asking about a replacement speaker (as someone suggested)? If it was me, that's what I'd do; at least find out how much it will cost you.
4. What amp is it, specifically? I did a search and came across this service manual for the Little MkII combo: http://www.eserviceinfo.com/downloadsm/51892/Mark%20Bass_Littel%20Mk2%20combo.html It details info on changing jumper positions for different line voltages, and I daresay all other class D amps from Markbass would similarly be able to be configured.
5. That is a great price- less than half the price of GK's 'other' Neo 2x12", and also lighter - 15.4kg vs 23kg. I can only assume, then, the wood in the 212MBE is a little thinner and lighter. I'm a big fan of 12" speakers, and look forward to a full 'gig' report.
6. Is the speaker connected with spade lugs, or soldered on? If the former, remove and replace them a few times in case there's a bad connection due to corrosion. If the latter, remelt the solder to make sure the connection is good. I've mistaken a loose dust cap for a broken speaker in the past - makes it sound very buzzy. So check the dust cap is attached to the cone properly all round. After that, try pushing the speaker cone in a few times. Can you feel if there is any 'rubbing' or resistance? I've owned a Big Ben before - great sounding cabinet, hope you can get it working again soon!
7.
This is so kind and generous of you.. thanks a lot for doing this, makes my day !
I can only take credit for finding the video, some other nice person uploaded the clip. It's tough being outside the UK with the (reasonable) regional restrictions on the BBC's content.
8. For non UK people: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEDeIsOe3Rw
9. Just wished to add some more thanks for these videos and the offer of transcriptions and advice with our own arrangements. I'm always surprised that more people don't express appreciation, because many teachers don't offer this kind of tuition or assistance, or it can take one ages to work things out on one's own. Anyway, many thanks, and eagerly following this thread.....
10.
But then it would be worthless...
'Relic' => make it look well-used without affecting it's functionality. Relicing a guitar / bass doesn't render it unplayable, so relicing a case shouldn't make it unusable.
11.
Then they advertise it as for sale with a "Brand new tweed case". Is that really authentic then, or is that to show you what you could have got if you had a matching guitar. Unbelievable!
The case should also be given the relic treatment.
12. Who is the ancient codger on keys? What was most impressive was Jaco holding it down during that trombone solo (and the associated jabbing at keys from previously mentioned codger). I guess now someone will tell me the keyboard player is <famous name> at his final concert and I should have more respect....
13.
Medleys? Cheeseville, Gorgonzola.
Exactly my thoughts. However, although being half Estonian, I don't know at a cultural level what works in the market here. And, as I'm slowly beginning to learn, 'cheese' seems to sell. Partially because of being shut up inside the USSR for so long, the music culture in Estonia is sometimes a bit strange and dated. I appreciate all the feedback. Perhaps this is a situation where commercial considerations trump matters of taste? For 50+ EUR a gig, and within a band that is well organised with gigs planned months ahead, I'd be willing to play almost anything!
14.
I generally hate medleys... they just scream Jive Bunny. They cheapen the song, IMO. As an aside.. would you mind posting some youtube clips to the classic Estonian tunes you mention? I'm genuinely intrigued to hear them. Thanks!
Sure! Here's a selection, but you'll have to excuse the imagery. A lot of the original video clips get taken down for copyright reasons, leaving just 'private' youtube videos. Aeg ei peatu - Apelsin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAfsYN64V3s Tühjad Pihud - Gunnar Kraps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnLvnqkulsE Imelik masin - Mikronid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSoFdbrikGw Insener Garini hüperboloid - Vennaskond: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYYP5eRyMVM Mis värvi on armastus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYwKFIdEdrc Linda, Linda - Vitamiin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjh6rtb5BJg This is a fair range; a number of tunes popular with the older crowd (40+).
15. I'm about to start playing with a covers band - the songs range in style from blues to rock to 'classic' Estonian tunes from the 60s through 90s. The band gigs pretty regularly (several times per month) and each member is paid pretty decently (for this part of the world). In fact, I've joined it mainly to make some extra dosh - 4 gigs a month equates to about an extra 200 EUR here, not bad (IMHO) at all. The average salary is about 500 - 550EUR month, so a couple hundred EUR (tax free) is very handy. However... today the band leader called me. As this band has been around for a while a few members are feeling quite jaded, and want to do some different songs. The problem is that no-one can really agree on what songs to play. In previous cover bands it was generally accepted it was necessary to play some songs you didn't like, and to my way of thinking this is a good compromise. Also, once you actually start playing the songs you 'hate' often they become more or less ok. Back to the band leader; his idea to solve all the problems regarding song selection was to play medleys - grab the 1 minute (or so) of each song that is familiar to people, and then beat / key match this 1 minute with a bunch of other 1 minute chunks. His idea is to play 50% or more of medleys in the set. My natural instinct is that this is a crazy idea; people want to hear the whole song, and chopping and changing so much will frustrate the audience. It's also, dare I say it, just lame. His reasoning also included the classic "no-one else has done this, so it's a good idea". I refrained from pointing out that no other bands had done it because it's likely a crap idea but anyway.... Maybe my thinking is off here. Can so many medleys work? Does anyone else's cover band do this sort of thing?
16. Thanks for the replies - much appreciated. The majority gigs are played with PA support, in which case the rig is used for on-stage monitoring. Most of the time, the setup I have is enough, but on bigger stages or outdoors I need to fall back to using a distorted sound so everyone on-stage can hear the bass. The 2x12 cab idea is one I'd been considereding. One issue is that I have no car, and so all transport is done via taxi - which is why the 2 x 112 setup is so good. Still, something like the Barefaced Super 12 looks ideal, and would be affordable, portable and seemingly loud enough. Hmmm ....
17. I'm pretty happy with my Shuttle 6 and GS112 / GS112NT combination. The Shuttle supposedly provides 600W into 4 ohms (which is the impedance of the two Aguilar cabs paralleled); however I believe this wattage to be a little generous. Would moving to something like a Shuttle 9 or higher wattage Streamliner, given I'd be using the same cabs, provide any benefit? I'm thinking likely no with respect to overall volume, but perhaps in terms of headroom. At louder gigs I'm using the Shuttle in a way that makes the red 'about to clip' light come on maybe 30 - 50% of the time.
18. I find it hard to believe the sound was setup in complete isolation .... maybe that's why live his sound is less than what it could be! Surely at that level of show there'd be lots of tweaks done (EQ / mixing / volume) on a per-venue basis?
19. I'm pretty curious about what class D module they're using for this, as - AFAIK - 2-ohm capability for the OEM modules GB and MB uses is not very common (in fact, I can't recall any of their amps working at 2ohms at all). Presumably some kind of 'off the shelf' class D module is also used in these amps.
20. I know Tal moved to the USA, but I bet she also would have found it easier to get on the breakfast TV show in the clip because she's Australian, and Richard Wilkins (co-host) has been very helpful toward supporting Australian music for a number of years. I also suspect some here might interpret that as 'unwarranted attention' also.
21.
I'm sure she's very good at what she does but I can't help wondering why players like this didn't just buy a guitar in the first place.
She did - Tal was a guitarist to start off with. Some pretty nasty comments on here. For me, it's good enough to see a talented young (and, seemingly, very pleasant) musican make their way in the world. And if she can bring a bit of attention to bass playing (and encourage more female musicans perhaps at the same time), it can only be a good thing.
22. I purchased a Digitech tuner from Tom, paid via paypal; he shipped via registered post to me in Estonia, and everything went very smoothly. The pedal was 'as advertised', and packed very well. Thumbs up!
23. Do the heads stay on under gig conditions? I've had my Shuttle 6.0 vibrated off the top of my cabs before. I had to buy a 'rock towel' (black hand towel) to place underneath it to hold it steady.
24. Wonderful. Chaka has long been the focus of my ... mostly music-related ... fantasies. I regularly play through this version of 'Tell me something good': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWcAUxIgXxc
