1. 3 that spring to mind are John Enwistle, Peter Hook and Pete Steele (JJ mentioned earlier). All instantly recognisable. Having said that, they are all players where their sound is very upfront and part of the whole recognisable sound of the band. Most bands don't require this from a bass player. In m y younger days I was always trying to find a sound the would allow my playing to push through as a signature sound for the band, now that I have mellowed with age the tone that I look for is one that melds with the overall sound of the band. That doesn't mean that the bass has to sit in the background, it can still have presence and drive the grooves.
2. After a rehearsal the other week me and the drummer got asked to jam with these guys who were doing some synth type setup. Rather than get my bass out one of the guys suggested I use and old set of bass pedals that was laying around. I really loved the sound and the way it made me re-think riffs (it only being a single octave). Inspired, when I got home I dug out my old MC-303 which has a good selection of bass sounds and very editable. Not keen on the button style keyboard but have been thinking of including it in my band's setup.

Epiphone EB-0

I have one that I modded. Dimarzio model one at the neck, routed and added a fairly cheap select by EMG mini humbucker at the bridge, replaced the bridge with a Schaller 3D and put a set of Status flats on it. Solved the neck-dive by using a suede strap. I have to say it is a dream to play and there is plenty of range in the tone. It may be the honeymoon period but I am using it more than my old Washburn Status.
4.
If it's too loud, you're too old. - Ted Nugent posted by the guy who has been using earplugs since age 18
I'm way too old
5. As a child I suffered serious ear infections which left my hearing damaged. The top frequencies in one of my ears had apparently gone though I couldn't tell in everyday situations. During a 16 year hiatus from playing in bands I worked as a DJ and upon returning to playing bass I find I cannot hear the rest of the band unless I am right by their individual amps/drum kit, they are constantly telling me that they cannot hear the bass but to me that is all I can hear. Having said that we have recruited a new very talented keyboard player who sometimes has his instrument so loud that it actually hurts my ears, he is cool though and turns down when I ask him. Protect your hearing!
6.
I thought Paul Barker played bass for Ministry, but I lost contact with them after Psalm 69?
He played with them in the mid 2000's i believe.
7. Wasn't really Trying to compare him to Youth. Just wanted to put a word in for Mr Raven for his work with both Killing Joke and Ministry. The first 2 KJ albums are in my collection and are among my most played.
8.
In between being Paul Gadd and becoming Gary Glitter he was Paul Raven. No relation to the Killing Joke guy, presumably
I bow to your superior knowledge of Mr Dodgy Glitter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnpwuRlXbhk&ob=av3e
9.
Er...wasn't that Gary Glitter's previous stage name?
err. Don't know about that mate. Was refering to Paul Raven (the late) of Killing Joke. I think Gary Glitter's real name is something like Paul Gadd
10. Me to drummer "if you're struggling with that bit perhaps we could try it a different way?" drummer: 'there's nothing wrong with my drumming i've got it nailed", me: "ok, sorry mate, let's do it then" drummer " hang on, let me just work out how to do this"

12. Don't know if he's been mentioned here but I was blown away by Steven Terebecki of White Denim when I saw them at The Electric Ballroom.
13. Steve Coogan once asked me if he could play my bass once ( he was "inspired" I said no ) proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlhQ3iC54QM
14. Yeah, I did a bit of web research on this yesterday and have decided to go for the heavier gauge Status flats
15.
The is no necessity to bring any basses or equipment just come andsoak up the atmosphere, have a chat and look at the gear. If however you have something that would be of interest to the others then bring it along.
cool, may well see you there.
16. This sounds like a really interesting event. Having not been to one before, just wondering if it's essential to bring gear or I can just come down to experience what's going on?
17. Had John make me up a wiring harness for an EB0 project. Excellent quality work, very helpful and a pleasure to do business with. Paul
