I read he was very ill/had a dreadful accident some years ago. Great player, give him my regards from an insignificant fan.
For those of you that may not be aware, Alan is perhaps one of the industries finest bass players - he is one of my main heroes and to say that he nearly died after an horrific motorway accident in 1988 he was out playing again following nearly a year's stay in hospital around 1990. The doctors told him that he may never walk, drive a car or yet alone play again and he proved them completely wrong - the guy is a legend. I told Alan that one of my fave basslines is `Kool in the Kaftan' by BA Robertson - yes, Alan played on it! His Shadows connection of course gave him more of a visible presence but he has played with thousands of name artists as well as film and TV scores etc. I will give him your regards Neil. -
Me too. Allo I too played the Wal at the Bass Merchants yesterday! I've had Wals in the past and for certain things, they are spot on - very fruity sounding - there are (as already noted) certain `dodgy' sounds available too but they are unique instruments and very well made. I wish I'd kept one in the collection; I worked in a shop at weekends in '87 and we had nine in stock - all different woods etc - would be worth a fortune these days. Awful slappers (pullers) though (imo!) - too much space under the strings for me.
Met Nick in a good old Basschatter's favourite venue - a motorway service station car park! Really nice guy & just one of those people you know you can trust with any sort of deal From a brief 2 minutes watching him acoustically trying out a bass I have a sneaking suspicion that this man can really play. . .
Aww! Barrie is of course absolutely correct!!! Cheers!
Y'know, there's not many places where you can get direct contact with the original artist to sort out a transcription issue! f***ing RESULT!, Dr OTB, you've got a drink on me, if you ever come by Newbury!
Gawd bless ya! We don't f*ck about here mate - `...you wanna know the licks and tricks, then stick with Nick's mates!!' Alan will be more than happy to help - if he's still in the country! Not sure when he's flying out. I'm depping for him this Saturday with the singer Mike Berry! -
Took a trip down to South Mimms to meet Barrie earlier today to exchange an envelope bursting with bits of paper for a lovely Status Series II bass. He actually threw a case in with the deal and so he will receive some strings in the post! Seriously, we'd never met before but feel like I've known him for years - top man! Cheers! Nick

Looks pretty ok. I know the guy who played on the record (Alan Jones) - he's in Germany this week - pm me your phone number and I will pass it on to him - I'm sure he'd be able to help.
Does anyone have a decent tab for Love Really Hurts Without You by Billy Ocean please? I've got to learn it fairly quickly for a wedding. I've had a quick run through and it seems to revolve around the following (or something similar plus a key change obviously towards the end). Am I on the right lines, or even anywhere close? Verse F/F/C/C Gm/Gm/Dm/C Chorus F/F/C/C Gm/Bb/Dm/C Cheers John.
-
..I've read in interviews that Chris Squire's project `XYZ'* which featured Jimmy Page (and also Robert Plant at one point) formed the basis of some of the Firm's tunes! After XYZ, Chris was introduced to Trevor Rabin, the rest is history! * XYZ = Ex Yes Zeppelin I had contact with Tony some years ago, we (the Yahoo JD group) were trying to track down a black Roadie fretless that he'd had nicked. Really nice bloke.

Mad moment, 6 great basses for sale
wow, there are some great looking basses going here. that jazz is one of the nicest looking jazzes i've seen (i love bright basses though, i'd much rather a sparkly blue jazz to a classic looking one, in say sunburst or white). those peaveys are just great looking basses in general. and do those yamahas remind anyone else of the ibanez ATK range?
Those Yamahas are excellent - much more versatile (imho) than the ATK (still good tho) - the Yam BB1500 predated the ATK by some years. -
Only knowingly seen Nick (D.O.T. briefly (but effortlessly), Chris (Angryman) and Muppet play. Steve is as solid as they come and Chris is VERY melodic. Nick just makes things look so easy!!
...must be the `peterborough effect' ! In fact, this area has quite a few players, including of course Colin Hodgkinson who is the man! I've not heard you play but you have a great taste in gear! Chris is a great player; I've never heard Steve play but he is held in good regard - in fact, I meant to add Stu Clayton, Mike `tights' Brooks* and my good mate Slacker42 to my original list of fave Chatters. * only joking about the hose mate! -
Apols if this has been done before but having met quite a few fellow chatters, here's my list of favourite players! In no particular order and without prejudice! Each of these players has a definite quality to their playing that I've personally enjoyed - its not a question of how fast someone can play Mr Pink... Urb Funkmunky Me (of course!) Do you own the most expensive bass on Basschat
doctor_of_the_bass replied to steve-soar's topic in General Discussion
Hallo! I just love the way these threads run - in answer to the OP, then who knows? In terms of collections its probably Cetera as many of my fifty or so basses are cheapos such as some of my Arias and Washburns etc - these were purchased purely down to a nostalgia for all those basses that I wanted back in the 80s... However I do own a very old '74 Alembic LS-1 which I think may once have belonged to a very very famous player, in fact a legend - its value however is only measurable by the price someone would pay for it, as a bass its probably worth two or three grand but to a true collector, it might be worth a lot more. The ex Mark King Jaydee Classic that I owned cost £6k - again its value being driven by its association and at that point in my life, I had the money to buy it. If someone has a passion and can afford to spend money on that aspect of their life then great - even if you are starting out on the instrument, go for it - if in 6 months time you don't get on with it, sell it to me!! -
Oooooops! I didn't realise that the string retainers would slacken off enough to appear from under the cover... (doh). Thought it was a strange design. Thanks guys.
If you slacken them too far, the tuner knobs will unscrew from the retainers - just to let you know! Funnily enough, Guitarist magazine's review of a Series II model back in '84 did a similar thing - they took the cover plate off to change the strings - then put an `addendum' in the following issue to say that the string changing system was the quickest on the market. I really must get out more eh?!

I heard somewhere (from someone in the business) that the original Lodestone prototype basses were designed and built by Martin Sims - with no input from Status at all, even though they (Lodestone) have plagiarised the T-Bass headstock. Can't personally comment on tone or playability but they look a bit too heavy too me.
