1. I'd look out for a used Yamaha SLB100, it's the closest you'll get to a 3/4 acoustic feel wise, you can practise without annoying the neighbours, and you can take it on a bus.

You might not like the onboard sound but you can easily attach a pick of your choice to the adjustable bridge.

The Slb200 is a lighter weight option and packs into a smaller gig bag.

  2.
I've got a spare Underwood pickup. Works perfectly well but is surplus to my requirements.

    How much is it worth?

Or, anyone fancy swapping it for a fishman Pro Platinum EQ with cash your way?

    I'd like to know either.

    Thanks.
3. I'v e a Fishman BP100 that doesn't suit my needs.

Anyone fancy a swap for an Underwood, Upton Revolution Solo 2 or K& K Bassmax etc.?

    Or will sell.

    cheers
    Keith

  4.
I've got a Bassmax too. Quite happy with the sound but I've also got an Underwood that I haven't tried out yet. Will test and post results.

I read that the wooden card that comes in a cigar tube was good for padding out the slot. Worth a try and you get to smoke a nice cigar too!
If you decide that you don't like the Underwood I'd be interested in it.

  5. That looks cool Hugh,
I wonder if I should make my Wal 5 headless?

Seriously tho, I'm getting back into playing some fretless having just acquired a Steinberger, we must get together and have a bass night soon.

Can't wait to have a go on the Roadster!

  6.
Thanks for the replies.

Yes its understood that ideally a real one is the answer - but we dont (no really) have space to store it, and I think cutting it in half to fit it in the car may well result in a detrimetal tonal result!

Looked at the wav 4 - was hoping that would be the one to move up to though!

Although people do sniff at EUBs, as a practice tool, and to give him something to really get his teeth into I think that given our circumstances (available space, loonie 4 1/2 year old travelling at high speed all day with complete reckless abandon) its the best we can do for him.

Its a shame that the Stagg isnt up to it, they are right in the available funds slot....
The Yamaha SLB100 is about as close as you'll get to a 3/4 upright for feel, the arco sound is convincing, and has a headphone socket. Quite pricey new!

The SLB200 is more portable, less expensive, has a slightly slimmer neck and about 1/2" shorter scale.
They both suffer from a poor pizz tone unless you fit alternative trancducers to the bridge as I have.

I wouldn't go down the NS route for classical or jazz.
I had one for a few years before I got my first SLB100 and now realise how much it held me back as a double bassist.

  7.
Hi Keith,

It's an Eb neck with a low B (the only way to go if you ask me! :))and is 42.5 inch (108cm) scale length, so not too long considering the body size.

A 19th century german would be perhaps more what i had in mind if trading, but that said, when i bought this one i wasn't expecting to buy a new instrument, it was the only modern instrument i tried that didn't sound all "zingy", if you see what i mean.

I see you're in Harrogate, do you ever get a bit further south? as I'm a bit tied to my show (6 days a week)

    Cheers,
    Daf
Ah, I have a bass with that neck and scale length, it takes some adjusting to when one is used to 41.5"

I might be able to con the missus into a day out sometime
Where could I see the bass?

  8.
I've mounted a 10" Wizzy on a modified PA tripod so it plays at ear level. This is very useful when playing at low volumes so you can hear what you're playing clearly. It also kills any feedback that may be present. Used in conjuction with a Clarus this is as good (even better) as any PA, IMO.
I'm expecting a wizzy 10 sometime next week.
I'll look into elevating it, if I like the sound.

  9. I used that rig years ago with a 62 precision, one of the best sounds ever.
I later upgraded the speakers to EV's and got a 320 head.

Only sold the cab last year and it's still in use locally with Knievel http://www.knievel.co.uk/

  10.
I 've used one several times at The Avon Beach Cafe, Mudeford, nr Christchurch (on upright, with a blues trio). The venue have 2 (well, actually the earlier model with the dish-shaped base). I was really pleased with the sound, which was excellent, and seriously thought about buying one, but just can't afford it right now. Definitely on the wish list, tho'.

I was going to embed some video of us playing there, but the sound quality doesn't do the bose justice at all. If you're interested check out:

    cheers for that

I like the idea of having something at ear level, I've been experimenting with a small pa speaker on a tripod behind me, in addition to a cab on the floor, works well but it's extra gear to set up.
It's sometimes difficult to hear the upper registar when the drums & piano go up in volume.

    Cheers for the link.

Still interested in hearing from upright players

  12.
I've got an EUB. Does that count. Although it's not my first (of bass) instruments.
That more than counts
I just need to know what to take

I've got both SLB 100 & 200 Yamaha silent basses and acoustic upright if there's any interest
