Played a jam session in Bristol the other day and someone recorded it using a cheap tascam handheld recorder, its a bit rough and ready but you can get an idea of the sound.
Its the first track on the myspace page-

Anybody else on Gut strings? How you getting on with them?
Nice, very retro, reminds me of Jimmy Blanton - Mr J.B. Blues, or Oscar Pettiford

A freind of mine in Leeds has been using gut strings bought off ebay India for less tha £100 IIRC

    I'll do a search.

What are they like under the fingers?

  2. Thanks for the reply.
I quite fancy the Kolstein but it's a 39" stop, which might be ok but as you say it's larger than the Eminence.

I prefer to play an acoustic upright when I can, but sometimes I have to fit keyboard + p.a. along with my bass gear and passengers in my car, or play venues where space is restricted, the Eminence would suit better sizewise.
The Gallery in Camden have an Eminence for sale - bargain at £1700.
I think it's overpriced for second hand, Thomann have them at £1796 new!

  3.
I have one. It's great.

    ..and I'm not selling......
I was just about to order one when I was recommended one of these

How do you find your Eminence for feel & sound?

So who has tried these? At the price I'm sure a few people here have given them a go - what did you think of them?

  6.
Would also be interested in a 1x12 combo of similar value. Tubes would be nice.
These are fantastic amps for those players who switch between upright & bs/gtr.
I can plug direct with various urb pickups without the need for a pre amp, and they sound amazing with fenders or active basses.

    Highly reccommended.
    And lightweight too!

And Gareth is a top guy to deal with.

Does this bass have a small right angled patch of spruce replaced on the top just out of the picture?

I remember Paul selling a bass where he had removed a knot from the top and the grain of the patch didn't quite match.

    cheers

  11. Hi Geoff,
a friend of mine has a Yamaha SLB 100 that he loves, but would like something lighter and more transportable.
    I'll send him a link.

    take care
hey steve, it sounds great, honestly as good as any other EUB ive tried, im afraid i dont have any of me playing it. Hope lifes good, cheers Geoff
12.
Shame it's not being played, as it deserves to be. Seems it's destined to be a "found in my late uncle's attic" and sold on ebay as a 1959 Fender experiment in good condition with the usual dings for an instrument of its age. :)
I've a few desirable basses that don't get played, and probably will be found in the cupboard (attic) when I'm dead and gone, but while I'm still alive & kickin' there's always that chance that they might come in useful again, so I never get round to selling them!

I've withdrawn mine from sale, so good luck with the sale of yours.

  14. Some interesting posts while I've been busy gigging and living.

However it went back in the cupboard last week as I haven't the time to check in every couple of hours.

So as a value cannot be put on this bass I might as well keep it for the novelty value, unless anyone has anything interesting to swap?

    cheers all

This project sees acclaimed saxophonist Snake Davis teaming up with singer Helen Watson. Helen has a unique style and strong distinctive voice, crossing the boundaries between jazz, blues, soul and folk. The two first worked together many years ago when Snake played on Helen’s Blue Slipper album, which also featured Albert Lee and members of Little Feat. This project, now in its fourth year, includes Dave Bowie and Mark Creswell from The Suspicions. With no drummer in the line-up this is an acoustic show – great songs, with poignancy, passion and fun. With Snake Davis on sax and flute, Helen Watson on vocals, Dave Bowie on double bass, and Mark Creswell on guitar.

  16.
I remember playing one of these doublenecks when they came out. It was pretty good, and I nearly bought it. It wasn't anything like £1000 though, I think it was about £500 or thereabouts....
When I was searching for a double neck back in the mid 80's I visited the B.M.F. (British Music Fair) at Olympia.

On the front cover of the brochure was a picture of some guy with a double neck.

After asking around I found out it was a Washburn.

I went to the Washburn stand and asked if they had one I could try, and was told that only six were brought into U.K. and they had all gone, and the retail price was a little over £1100.

I'm not making this up, why should I?
I wouldn't have paid that much for any bass back then.

A friend spotted this one in a shop in Blackpool and borrowed it for me to try.
I got a good deal on it over the phone.

That's no good to anyone in U.K.
    It's left hand drive! :)

  19.
That was what became a real issue with the one I had: that f****** clamp! They obviously couldn't get a licence from Steiny so they made that thing. Bad design on an otherwise great bass.
I actually think the Washburn string clamps are better than the ones on my 1982 L2 Steinberger.

Ive never had a problem with them whereas on the Steiny I fitted a new set of T.I.'s (about £45), trimmed them off and had to put them in the bin because the centre core slipped inside the winding.
I've left plenty of afterlength with the set I have on now.

That doesnt happen on the Washburn, the strings are double clamped by a screw and the retainer.
