Does anyone sing or hum the bassline they are playing?
cheddatom replied to Paul S's topic in General Discussion
I love it when a player hums along. I really like it when george benson does it. The bassist for Ben Harper does it for a solo on the live DVD and it makes it so much more funky!! I can do it, but don't. When I play the drums I hang my jaw down like a fish and lick my toungue out occasionally. -
Anyone Ever Been Too Drunk Or Stoned?
cheddatom replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
If anyone thinks they play better after drinking or smoking or anything else, record the gig and listen to your timing. If tightness is your thing, you won't want to repeat that experience! Dan
Heh, everyone's different. I've been in the studio before and been too stressed out to play very well, so every time I record now, i'm stoned. Check out myspace.com/nologorock for tightness. -
If you want mental distortion and clarity then blending is the way to go. I would recommend you get a compressor to stick in one loop, and have it always on. Then have the other loop alternate between clean and mental distortion as you turn the dirt pedal off and on.

Does Anyone Know The Exact DBX 160 Compressor Steve Harris Uses?
cheddatom replied to StevieD_FenderP2009's topic in Effects
a compressor will only affect the dynamics of your sound, it wont affect frequency response. If you want to boost the high end, turn the highs up. Having said that, I suspect you will still like a compressor once you've got your high end boost sorted. I love compression. -
I think it really comes down to what quality is expected. A few years back I used my very decent Hi-Fi connected to a PC's on-board sound card's 3.5m jack input to put some vinyl on to CD. To me, the quality left a lot to be desired. Using a newer PC with a decent Creative Labs sound card made a huge difference. I would imagine that onboard sound cards have improved a little since then, but I would guess there can still be quite a difference in quality. Although I have never tried one, I can see how a dedicated off-board device with decent analogue to digital converters could improve the quality, just like a higher quality sound card would.
Ye, sorry, that does make sense, if a soundcard has crap converters then it will make quite a difference going to something better. FWIW I reckon most modern onboard soundcards will be the same quality as your creative card. I have m-audio delta 1010Lts which are nice.
The quality of the sound card can make a big difference.
I think when trying to record an instrument or a mic it makes much more difference than when you're recording a line-level input. EG (and please tell me if i'm wrong) they sell these USB turntables for ripping vinyl, which seem stupid to me as you could just plug your turntable through a hi-fi amp into the lin-in on a standard PC sound card to get the same quality.

The method you're using should be fine. It could be lots of things causing the noise. Perhaps the signal is too weak, or those particular outputs don't work properly. A headphone output on the desk would be ideal. It could be you're mistaking distortion for noise, and you're recording it too hot which would create horrible distortion. There should be no need to get another interface, your on board sound card should record line-level stereo at fine quality. I know mine does.

Cool! Thanks, i'll give it a go.
No. You laughed at my opinion and tried to tell me what I already know. I dont consider that respectful. Then the backtrack with the word respectfully.....again.
I did laugh at your post, yes, i'm not sure why. I think it's because a volume pedal is made up of so few components, that there is basically nothing to do wrong, and so "bespeco dulls tone" sounded a little ludicrous to me. Clearly someone else shares your opinion. Can someone explain to me what "quality of components" means? AFAIK there are no volume pedals using gold connectors. Like I said, a pot is a pot, so what's the difference? I understand the "taper" or "range" of a pot/pedal will vary from brand to brand, but what else? Could certain components really lead to loss of high frequencies? EDIT: When I said "lol" it wasn't an attempt to offend, insult, or make fun of you or your opinion, I guess the use of the word "respectfully" was to make that clear.

My kick drum sounds seem to be my biggest issue. Could I make a sub kick out of a hi-fi speaker and a drum?

When the thread title says "THE PREMATURE EJACULATORS" I get loads of maybes and I wishes. "Creep Joint"? F*%k off. Well f you basschat, I don't need you at my gig :snob: :(
Im sorry. I crawled up your fanny when exactly? Im well aware of what it is, but having sat in front of my amp youre well placed to question my judgement. Obviously you know best.
Jesus, are you not sleeping well? I RESPECTFULLY disagreed. My opinion is based upon the fact that I fail to see how one pot would sound any different to another pot of the same value. If someone can explain that to me, please do.

I should have been in incubus

BUMP I play the drums in this band so don't go freaking out the bassist demanding beer.
I found the bespeco dulls your tone a little.
Lol, it's just a pot! I respectfully disagree.

well, a week or two ago I was saying how i'd bought a budget bespeco one for £15ish and gigged it 1-200 times. It broke last week!! So it's probably worth investing in one of the more durable ones.
lol...
Heh, I just had a think. I used to gig using around 15 different distortion sounds regularly. That was using EQ pedals to shape/drive the dirt pedals as well though.
I need a custom flightcase building for my m13 and expr pedals nothing seems to be the right size stock.
Have you tried keyboard cases?
-
Explain dirt...? I would consider 'dirt' to be overdrives etc... I have an overdrive, a really really heavy distortion and a synth with squarewave/bit cruncher style distortions on it as well, so id say I have more than enough!... or do you mean something else?
You got it, but that only gives you 12ish combinations of dirt. Clearly everyone needs 50+ possible dirty tones on their pedalboard.
-
for a whole week, all food and drinks included, in a nice place in a decent hotel, £500 would be a steal!
-
Nice board! Needs moar dirt though.
-
It could also be your amp positioning etc, but obviously that will affect your overall tone, not just in distorted bits. I used to use distortion 80% of the time, and I never had trouble, but I had a guitar combo right next to my ear feeding me all the nasty high mids and highs.
