  1. I bought Girl's single Hollywood Tease, but for most kids with beer towels stitched to their jeans at that time they couldn't get past the thought that they were a bit fruity.
  2. I vote that the NWOBHM ended in December 1982. Simply because Def Leppard released Pyromania in Jan '83. I'll allow Dickinson in The Number of the Beast in '82, but May '83's Piece of Mind without Burr means it's finished. It was all stadiums and suchlike from then on.
  3. I saw Whitesnake once on the Come 'an Get It tour in '81. Once was enough, I thought they just phoned it in
  4. I vote no. Formed in '83 and after the fact. Not the young upstarts who did it for themselves
  5. Nah. Thunder got going in the late '80's. IMO the NWOBHM was done by '83 at the latest, '82 perhaps?
  6. The make or break for bands for me could come down to something as as trivial as a haircut and I rest my case with the Di'Anno/DIckinson wars. I suppose if you have something as unreconstructed as Uriah Heep and (pre Ace of Spades) Motorhead, anything else could come across as posturing fop-dandies I do remember being fiercely possessive of the bands I liked and pretty ruthless about the ones I didn't. So I can see how your cohort may see UFO as poseurs... which is a word I used to hear a lot then, but not much now. I recall it being a massive insult to a fan of whoever the poseurs were.. and the fans themselves. I remember committing the cardinal sin of having both a UFO and Stranglers pin badge on my school blazer and being called a poser by an older punk called Gums who was the bassist in our local punk band The Gimmicks... his real name was Julian Trought and I just said to him 'is your name Trout?' *Swish!* But, such were the battles in the Punk & Rock Wars.
  7. I really liked Exodus... they seemed to have a sense of humour
  8. Well, I think of myself as the target audience in 1980 and I didn't find UFO 'flash'. I thought they were down and dirty. Flash and rock-star-ish (for me) were the likes of Def Leppard who could burn as far as I was concerned. I always thought UFO an honest blues-hard-rock act with a wizard young guitarist and a bass player who was a bit of a character Absolutely how I felt about Iron Maiden until Di'Anno got the boot and the bell-end Dickinson got the gig. At that point it went from street reality to dungeons and dragons poppycock. Maybe it's something not discussed yet, but NWOBHM says Heavy Metal, but the bands I liked were what I remember being called Heavy Rock... Jeans not spandex. When the likes of Metallica came along I couldn't stand them because there was no groove, no blues... just earnest grimacing.
  9. Aye, and I felt a bit mean posting it.. I'm not having issues with people rocking out or those with drug and alcohol problems. But they were a band that could've done something if perhaps they'd got these things under control... The clue is in the name... music business. I speak with a little experience. There were a handful of bands I was in who could've been and nearly were signed, but dogged by drummers with personality disorders or guitarists who would rather get drunk before the meeting with the A&R man. I was often the odd man out who used to turn up (early) sober, do the gig, rehearsal, session or whatever and then party.
  10. Maybe, if their bass player was a businessman and not an alcoholic, and a singer who was a businessman and not a brawler.. or maybe the biggest talent not being an unreliable alcoholic. And I say this as a big fan of UFO and not keen on post Di'Anno Maiden Maiden were (because of Smallwood and Harris) completely focused on the business and the big picture.. Maiden and UFO is like the Viz's Brown Bottle coming up against Superman. Kap-pow!.... F'f'f'flipin' hell!?
  11. If it had a decent production it wouldn't be half bad,, but definitely contains the nascent NWOBHM DNA
  12. I was doing a bit of research and it turns out Motorhead recorded NSTH in March '81, so a year after the British Steel tour hit Newcastle in March 1980. I've done a bit of googling and Priest did 2 nights in Newcastle, the first at the City Hall, the second at the Mayfair. I remember this and believed the City Hall gig was added for under 18's as the Mayfair was 18+. So fair play to Priest as I was 13 at hte time I found these pictures from the recording of NSTH Motorhead City Hall gig 30th March '81, which I believe was the night I was there. All nicked from https://garyalikivi.com/ which is worth a shuffti
  13. Touched with what? 😉 For me it was a coming of age... getting out of Hexham and on the train doon tha toon. Walking up Northumberland Ave to the City Hall.. I can see the sky and smell the air (from the hops at Scottish and Newcastle) thinking about it now. Newcastle was always a good town for a show and a good rock town in general with the Mayfair, The Jubilee and the rest. Not long after that gig I saw Motorhead when they did a couple of one-offs at Newcastle and Leeds for what became the No Sleep Till Hammersmith Album. To this day that was one of the best gigs I've ever been too.
  14. Aye, from South Shields... Gan on Bonny Laaad!
  15. Found this thread, as from last night I'm looking for some new cans. Can't say I'm happy with the build quality of the PJB's, considering the cost. The foam pads and covering deteriorated quite early on and they snapped yesterday. Light home use.. mainly me at laptop watching Netflix as I have no compatibility with the missus TV choices and I've found it's wise to let her win. I bought these from Bass Direct with the Big Head (very well built) as a treat. They are are few years old, but sat in their box until about 2 years ago when I started using them, and the foam went in the first 6 months! Bit miffed to be fair Look upon my works and despair!....
  16. I always liked Girlschool. Saw them a couple of times and they definitely brought it.
  17. My first proper gig was in 1980 with Priest on the British Steel tour. Maiden supported with Di'Anno, Burr and Stratton. It was all about Running Free and they were pretty good. Newcastle City Hall was my stomping ground and we used to get down fairly regularly and see 3 bands for £2 or £3. I remember Girlschool, Angelwitch, Witchfynde, Tank as well as the big names like Motorhead. I'm proud to say I had a ticket to see Def Leppard on the On Through the Night tour, but I didn't go because I thought they were cr@p. Never regretted it, because it's a fact that they are cr@p.. Bombay Shite-Hawks as the NME would used to say. My prejudices were borne-out at Donnington in '86 when I finally saw their nonsense
