Yeah I had a few of those, one I wished I’d kept, I think they were around from about 2003 until 2008
I love mine. It's probably been played at more gigs than all my other instruments combined

Didn’t Fender themselves dabble with this (S1 switch) in order to allow Jazz players to run the pups in series and attempt a more Precision-like sound? Seem to recall it was in some mid 00’s instruments IIRC.
Yes I have a 2006 Jazz with the S1 switch. It works very well when you need a bit of extra thump.

There is a place about 5 miles away called Essex Amplifier Repairs who came very highly recommend by the guy I bought the Bass from, so I might start with a call them.
They’re great.Really nice guys and excellent service.
However if it was me I’d go for the Trace Elliot Boxer above.

I see. I personally I was referring to the onboard preamp with contol plate that for example here https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Sadowsky_Preamp.html states that pickups connect with solderless connection (not sure about the ground for the bridge but I imagine that could just go in the earth of the J pickup?).
So what I meant is: if I buy a Sadowsky preamp for £150 and I put it in my passive Squire VM J which sounds and play great as is, I get the preamp AND the tone control - if I understand correctly. If I buy the Sadowsky ME made in China for what I imagine will be north of £700 (pure guess, given they sell the ones with the old logo for £650) I do not get the tone control. One can buy and install the tone control for another 100 (assuming one has a soldering iron) but then brings the total to maybe £800. Now, the Sadowsky offers more than just the preamp, with lightweight tuners, high mass bridge and likely very good pickups. But then it is maybe £700 without tone control and £800 after buying it, so not cheap. I suppose whether the bass will be worth it or not will all go down to overall quality, and how the various parts fit together. Plus obviously subjective taste
Yes that makes sense if you have space for the preamp and battery in your Squier. I'd expect the build quality on these is in a similar league.
The 4 knob VTC on the control option, that I fitted isn't solderless though that must be an older model you're looking at. Having been a long time Fender P and Jazz fan I love Sadowsky basses for the reasons you mention, plus the light weight controls and neck feel I suspect the introduction of the ME series is a cunning plan as a gateway drug to the Metroline and NYC models !

I am sure these are great basses for many purposes but at the end of the day for what I understand they are jazz basses with boost only preamp and no tone control knob. From my point of view, that's not a very interesting proposition, especially as that preamp (with tone control and solderless connections) is widely available for not too much money
I believe that the VTC upgrade is no longer available solderless. I certainly had to solder mine; which was straightforward enough, although I also had to add a washer to the volume pot to clear the cut out edge on my Chinese ME, rather than get jiggy with my router. I haven't seen this as an issue on any other forums or the Sadowsky users FB page apart from my post.

Try it. I bet you wind up with a slightly lower output knob position.
More clarity with less volume is a very good thing.
I’ll give it go at the next rehearsal

How do you like it? Is it worth the effort ($$$)?
Definitely
It gives a much weirder palette if usable sounds, particularly using the bridge pickup.

Always stack 2x10"s vertically. Makes a hell of a difference to your sound. Regardless of make. I've been doing this for at least 10 years now.
Stops combing effects and dead spots as you walk from side to side, and because the top 10" is next to your ears you can hear it properly.
Plus the addition of the cab and coupling effects means the volume increases out of proportion to what the calculated power drop of the amp, due to increased impedance, implies.
I bought some rubber feet from B&Q and put them on the side of my cabs.
I would if I had two 2x10s but I don't want to stack the combo on it's end

Honestly considering e-mailing Warwick to see if they'll sell me a new neck with the Sadowsky logo on it. I like my 1st gen very very very much but man. That logo.
Me too, especially since I fitted a VTC plate

I have the LM2 head in my combo and feel pretty much the same. Are they better than the newer class D ones? I’ve had this setup for quite a long time and often toy with the idea of changing, eg V4B or Handbox valves intrigue me, then I gig this rig and think yep that’ll do. I like what I’ve read and seen about the Cali compressor too.

In that case you ought to try it for bass too.
Works great both as a bass preamp and as a bass drive (and a lot of people actually use it as such, either/both).
I imagine it would be good for di recording bass to add a bit of warmth like I do with guitar. I tend to use a pretty clean bass sound live.

Oh, and this one also on fretless. What a great bass line IMO 👌🏼
I found this a real challenge to play and sing vocals over the top, but one of my favourite 80's songs 👌🏼
I used to do this one too in a previous band. Busy bassline isn’t it ? Can’t imagine trying to sing it at the same time. Kudos for that !

Nicely done Mike, it's a great line to play 👍🏼
Our guitarist plays the muted trumpet solo on his Roland guitar synth, we see some puzzled looks on faces when he does that on guitar 🤭
Thanks that’s kind of you. The drums on this recording were programmed by the keyboard player too!

This is an album which is part of a project featuring tracks by Derek & the Dominoes,Grateful Dead, Little Feat, The Band and all sorts of other early ‘70s stuff.

There is also an EP featuring the original instigator of Rootsy Blue, a good drummer friend and long time musical collaborator of mine, whose aim was to put together a collection of the music that he grew up with, for his grandson.

I’m really pleased with these.
BTW I much prefer the quality of the Tidal streams.

My band do New York Minute first half, gives me a chance to play my Cliff Bordwell fretless I bought from @Clarky
That’s a cracking Pino line isn’t it. A few members of a band I used to play with did a lockdown recording with me using a borrowed squire vm fretless, which I really liked.

The original version of this song always makes me happy and playing it even more so. It was a privilege to be asked to play on this and a delight to record and film. It’s not a hard line, but that doesn’t matter to me.
That's great, I really enjoyed that thank you. I'm a huge PG and Tony Levin fan and this is one of my favourites tracks from one of my all time favourite albums. I love what you've done with it

I've been here since the 100-member days of BassWorld. Hell yes it's a community, at least IMO. I've met some really lovely people through this place, and whilst I don't see any on a daily or even weekly basis (more's the pity) it's always lovely getting together with them at the Bashes.
This is my experience too

They really need to jack it in. They're just dreadful, in the studio and live.
In the meantime, Jon Anderson is on the road having a whale of a time with the Band Geeks, playing Yes stuff with energy and enthusiasm (and apparently Boris Johnson on drums).
Thanks WOT. I enjoyed that far more than the new one

Squier VM fretless are about the same money used (£200?)
I'd certainly endorse these. I had one on a long term loan from a friend for a while and really didn't want to give it back.
