Had a gig with the ABBA tribute last night and boy, that little Sadowsky is one of the cheapest basses I own but it's very quickly growing to be one of my favourites. What an amazing instrument.

I love mine too, the purchase of which was inspired by your review. Thank you.

How do you find the Sadowsky (and I'm glad I'm not the only one whose brain immediately went to Tesco)? I keep veering between wanting one and thinking I should save up for a second-hand Japanese one (or go for the one brand new one still on sale - not saying where though!), or go a different route entirely.

Despite the crappy logo I really like it, after a good setup and new strings it works very well for me. I tried a German Metro Express recently, in Germany funny enough. It was very nice and felt like a more expensive bass, however, at three times the price I can neither afford nor justify the cost. I also think that I prefer the simplicity of the two band EQ on mine as I didn't really have time get to grips with the German one in the shop. If money was no object however...

  3. I have a USA one from 2006, which I love dearly. All standard, with the S1 switch, I can't think why I would change anything; it does the job very well. and is probably my most gigged bass.

I have a couple of Precisions and a Sadowsky Tesco Express fiver, which is my main squeeze with the current band, however the Jazz is the one I wouldn't part with.

We're with the in-laws. So far everything has been "just awful". Poor old Sam Fender on Beeb 1 was also talentless apparently.

Yes We watched a bit of that before the fireworks, It was pretty dire

  5. I tried the Sonicake briefly at a rehearsal last night and my initial impression was very good. It was easy to slip into  Dalek noises if the octave knobs were two high, but for a more subtle, and in the context of the stuff we were playing, more usable sound I had it set somewhere like this attached. First time I’ve used an octaver but seems a good deal for 27 quid and looks well made enough.

Chris Squire - generally from the first Yes album I owned, Yesshows, and specifically this bass solo from Ritual. At the time (way before the Internet) I only had the audio recording and I was convinced this was a guitar solo because in my limited experience, no bassist played like this.

I don't think I've come close in terms of technique and I don't own a 4001 but I do tend to play at the dusty end of the neck, often play with a pick and I like that gritty sound (where appropriate).

Me too, although I’m sure as a callow 15year old with a Kay precision copy that I never came close, despite jacking up the VS on my HH amp and playing round wounds with great speed and gusto with a nylon pick.

  7. I bought Brian’s Pedaltrain.

A smooth, efficient and very pleasant transaction, despite some PayPal muppetry from me. Well packed just as described and a very prompt delivery.

I’ve found that having the neck pickup on full, bridge pickup on  about 25% and tone on about 75% gets me a good almost Precision type sound that works really well for classic rock on my Jazz. This setup both reducing highs and adding mids As said earlier the CS62 pickups also help nicely on this as they’re quite full sounding.

This works for me. Stock USA pickups, I tend to use  100% neck 75% bridge, tone in the middle. I have a jazz with the S1 switch. Switching to series really does beef up the sound and output

Another and cheaper option would be to install a series/parallel switch on your jazz. Incase you don't know, a Jazz bass' pickups are wired in parallel (so they work as 2 separate pickups) and a Precision's are in series (the two halves of a Precision pickup are actually two single coils wired together to act as one whole pickup. This gives a P bass it's extra oomph). By having a Jazz bass' pickups wired in series, the bridge and neck pickups will then work together like a Precision's does and give you that extra oomph.

Usually achieved by having a pull/push pot on the Jazz neck pickup volume knob. It would still be your regular Jazz, just click up the vol pot for P-bass like fatness.

@Ki0gan is a basschat member that can supply such a thing very reasonably using top quality components that are easy for anyone to install.

I have the S1 switch on my Jazz  which does this, giving it quite a boost and more thump. It's good, however it still doesn't sound like a Precision; you need one.

I’d take the Thumper out of your bitsa and stick it in this. The wizard is a tremendous pickup, I love it.

I really like the bitsa as is

SX ash body, Mighty Mite Fender licenced neck, Gotoh hardware, CTS pots and flats. It’s my “funk machine” especially for recording.

I'm always curious about stuff like this.  What are you actually expecting from the swap?

The only swaps I felt were absolutely necessary were where the pickup was dead, had an underlying issue or was missing completely.  In a blind test would you be able to identify what pickup is in there?

I know my other P, a bitsa with a Wizard Thumper fitted, sounds completely different to this one and I’m curious to see what a better pickup would do for this one, especially if only £35 for the upgrade

This has been a lot of work, but this is our promo video.  This kinda started semi seriously to have fun playing hard music with my friends but I've decided to try and get out doing shows.

I'm Scottish, so my accent is wrong for singing like Mark King so I just tried to sing in my voice. I am also not a singer! There's obviously some autotune at work, but we probably only spent about 10 hours in the studio recording the audio for this! My singing is...passable live. My sister (who is filling the role of Mike Lindup) is an outstanding singer, who fronts my other band called Danger Zone (wedding/events band).

Level 42 splits people. Some people hate slap bass out of principle for some reason. For me, it's hugely enjoyable and highly expressive. So I'm aware I'm going to take flack for even attempting something like this! So be it. I'm well aware of the failings of this band (my vocals!).

However, the guys in the band are top notch and I want to show off our hard work. This has been a very challenging project from start to finish.

In truth, we don't sound much different live - thought obviously the singing is not a good. I can sing and play the parts no problem, the drummer is super humanly tight and our keyboard player is also a masterful sound engineer. We use  a Soundcraft UI24 which is awesome.

The bass was my JayDee through a Trace Elliot GP12 with what I think is the correct EQ setting. The only track with the Status was "Heathrow"

I'm trying to get this band out doing shows, but my home town of Dundee is dismal for live music. I guess I need a promoter or an agent. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated!

The work paid off; that’s really impressive. Good luck with the promotion I really hope that you can get those live shows on the road, I’d come and see you
