  1. Most of my prejudices are based on aesthetic features:

    Single cut basses

Coffee table finishes, often goes with the above.

    Relic’d basses

    Headless basses.

The look of Alembics, apart from John Entwistle explorer one, although I’m sure they’re superb basses, if a bit extortionate.

    Ditto Wal and Warwick shapes.

I play four and five string basses but have never felt the need for a six.

  2. Lovely gig on Friday in Debenham, Suffolk, at the  Community centre. After a horrible 11/2 hour journey cross country we were really well looked after with BLTs and tea by the team there. Nice stage and excellent sound, courtesy of pro sound engineer Peter and his wife running the house rig plus some of his monitors. It’s a big room with a high ceiling but Peter really did a top notch job.

A decent sized crowd, packed dance floor and overall a very friendly place to play. It’s only the third music gig that they’ve put on and they deserve to do very well.

Lots of nice comments afterwards from the audience and on social media.

    Guitarguitar still have one…

I played that in Edinburgh in August. it’s been on the shelf for ages. Not sure why as it felt and sounded great  I was quoted a best price of £1400, although the ticket still said £1799 so maybe  that’s why. If I’d been in the market for another 4 string jazz I’d have brought it home.

  5. Last night with The Gray Project was at the White Horse in Beyton. A regular for us they’ve been very supportive of the band and it’s always a fun gig, if a bit cramped sometimes. Nice local crowd and the icing for me, in addition the the lovely pre-gig steak pie and chips, was going to the bar at the end and a chap, who’s seen us a couple of times, buying me a pint and both him and his mate shaking my hand telling me I’m a superb bass player. He said he played bass in a blues rock band and couldn’t play the half stuff that I did. Surprisingly neither of them appeared particularly drunk either. Which was nice. I’ve taken to using my rig upright as advised in several posts on here. It definitely sounds better to me and my band mates have also commented positively.

  6. Lovely couple of gigs this weekend. Yesterday A very friendly village pub in Suffolk who laid on a marquee and barbecue and very sensibly scheduled us to play between and 5 and 7pm. It was like finishing work at lunchtime and going home early. Which was nice. Flattering comments about both band and bass player from the very receptive crowd.

Today was Bnatural Festival in Bildeston. Band on top form, plug in and play and another early finish. I’d forgotten how good an SVT sounds (so long as someone else carries it) on stage The sound engineer says he also has an 8X10 but it was a bit much for the stage today. With 4 subs out front, and the SVT and 1x15 classic cab my bass sounded huge.

I love playing my bass especially when I'm having a good night. However for me, there's nothing like playing and looking out at a sea of people dancing and having a great time.  That's when I feel like I'm contributing to society.

That’s our job. Great feeling isn’t it !

Looks like I’m in a minority here, but I have found that it’s best to never write anything down or have any notes for learning a new band set.

I had never believed this would work until I went for a lesson with an internationally renowned jazz guitarist and tutor.

We sat down, I got out my instrument, and then a pad and pen, and was told immediately to put the pad away. If I wrote things down then “the paper would become the knowledge”. He said that if I came away with only 10% of what we went through lodged in my head then that would be the best result.

Since then, I have just relied on my brain, exclusively, when learning new material. I recently joined a nine piece band being formed from scratch. On our first meeting, we had ten tunes to go over which we’d be given in advance. I was the only one in the room with no notes, but it went fine and I’m still there.

Jazz jams are a different thing entirely mind you, if everyone has a lead sheet then at least you all know what’s supposed to be happening.

    Me too Rob

Once I’ve written it down I have to rely on my notes.

  9. I just tried the above Japanese RV4 Metro Express that’s been hanging around at GuitarGuitar Edinburgh (I’m on holiday)for a while now and have to say I’m surprised it’s still there. Lovely!  I’m a very happy Chinese Tesco Express owner,  I’m intrigued to try the new line.   At £1400 for the Japanese one, if it had been a 5 string I’d be sorely tempted in fact I think I still am.

This is the stage set up for the support band. My kit is hiding behind after we had  sound checks.

It was great fun, good sound, nice monitor mix, a great sound engineer and  small-ish but very friendly appreciative crowd. I was very tired, having had a 4:30am start for my day job and then playing from 9-10:30pm straight through, fuelled by a massive kebab and chips after sound checking, then loading out and driving home arriving after midnight. A proper coffee and carbs day.
