Picked this up on eBay last week. Been in the hunt for a P/J or a P/MM. Having played jazz basses for the first 10+ years before moving to P, I knew I'd be comfortable with the jazz shape and neck. It's been kept in great condition with only a few tiny dents. Was a little over budget but I did get a nice tweed hard case and spare scratch plate and pickup so can't complain!

Action was quite high so I lowered it a bit and loosened off the truss rod a little based up on some YouTube advice. Plays better now but it's going to be a definite investment to get a guitar tech or Luther to give it a proper once over. Can anyone recommend anyone in west Yorkshire?

The model P pickup is nice but it's difficult to blend with the fender noiseless bridge pickup. I may have to have a look at what pick up I have in my squier CV P bass because I love that. In case the chap who sold it to me via basschat in 2012 is reading, can you remember?! Don't rate the preamp that much but I'm a passive guy anyways. I'll leave it in and just run passive. The battery ran out within the first hour of playing so the active/passive switch is now a more convienient kill switch. Some electronic experimentation required!

Neck is really nice. The shape will take a little getting used to, it's a little deeper than my pbass but comfort will come in time. Has a lovely satin finish.

Anyways ... boring stuff over, here are some photos!

not sure how many setup work or repair work they actually take on but i'd definitely recommend getting in touch with alpher

Yes, she’s a beaut and in amazing condition. The serial is 4 lower than my Pro IIE and mine is a Sept 1979 build date (verified by Pete at Wal) so Aug/September 79 is a likely date.

Love my Pro - they have their quirks but are still the second most amazing sounding and playing instruments (first most amazing being the Custom Series Wals, of course🤣) .

Someones going to be an exceedingly happy bunny when they snap this one up.

PS @fretless , you do realise that 6 or 12 months down the line you’re going to wake up one morning, sit bolt upright in bed and scream, “Aaaarrrggghhh!!!! The one that got away!!!!!” 😉

Hi Trevor , people seem to acknowledge you as the "Wal Geek" here, or did i get it wrong?

i've personally not seen an active wal pro.  What. are the controls?? are they same as "real wals" ?

    cheers

have seen the other thread.  Ignore :)

Very good, I thought the moons were quite heavy, obviously not! 👍🏻 Lovely bass.

early ones can be 5,5 kilo ... they go lighter in the 90's

    been around since. 78

Don't mind, but I think that even with used basses regardless of their age, they have to have a certificate to prove that they are in fact, pre cites.

I'm worried that if I were to import one and it doesn't have the certificate, then it will end up being seized by customs and I could end up losing my money. 🤔

anything coming from USA or Japan (used or new) will need certificate if it's a commercial transaction.

107 pages of content, including: opinions; problems; advice and porn, makes this a completely viable thread IMO, no matter what its origins. My Maruszczyks have been great and have consigned my 4003s to being merely decorative.

In other news, I’ve been toying with swapping the necks of my Elwood Ls over for a while. Today I thought I’d check the hole alignment. Yeah, that’s not happening, they are not the same. I shouldn’t be surprised, Adrian has said in the past that (at least back then) that each body and neck are made for each other. Hmm, other GAS reducing tactics must be employed methinks.

yes indeed , i can confirm that each body and neck are STILL made for each other from scratch. No "assembling" going on. Still 100% made at Mensinger Factory.

For example you cannot really fit a gloss neck with a neck pocket that has been cut / fit for a satin body and vice versa....

Seems an odd compromise to make though (given the many many colours and pick up combos) - surely lots of J players want 38mm..? or maybe not?

Yes. Of course .... up until recently Maruszczyk was doing probably... 30% / 40% Custom shop instruments and 70% of Standard basses (all with 40mm in order to save time and money i guess)

Now the Balance has shifted to probably 90% custom shop basses (around that). Which on request they can build you 38 or 40 or 42 even I guess. Always could do it.
