Indeed... it got me very confused on my first one, someone less cautious than me might have created some damage!
yes , i'd have to agree. I've heard of troubles happening in the past on orders

Ah - that'll be why, then. I guess they must be confident that enough winds on the tree will do the job..?
I'm not gonna answer for them but i've seen drastic differences in "buzzing" (usually on open strings) with more winding. I'd personally advise the full lengh of the peg , or about 3 turns + .... and then wonder about the rest (string tree or whatever, even if that's too a very small fix either way)

Tried the string, slight improvement, filed the nut a bit, took a bit longer than 76 seconds, but all is good now as long as the string comes out from the base of the tuner.
I think it is probably lacking one of those string tree things to hold it down, I suppose that is a problem with a non angled fender style neck.
Maruszczyk standard heads are slightly angled so you specifically do not need one of those but you must have enough winding and sometimes some minutes of nut filing are needed.

I have a file, and more than 76 seconds, so I will give that a try.
There actually isn't much winding around that tuning peg - is that a problem?
"isn't much" is hard to say but can be yes indeed ..... so try changing strings and put enough (more?) winding around the peg before going for nut filing

I have a rattle on mine at the moment, which I think is related to the lack of tension across the A string (as I can just push it out of the slot easily, which I can't do with any other bass), and it goes away when fretted (anywhere).
Action everywhere is fine though (on an elwood 3+2 24fret neck)
all you need is a round file and 76 seconds. Take off the string and carefully make the nut "deeper" on the A string. Step by step ... until it goes away.
I have had that 3 times on customers basses. 1st one went to a local luthier and got told it needed a refret / levelling for 300 euros. Adrian sorted it in 39 seconds at his HQ.
do make sure you have enough winding around the tuning peg.

Thanks both. Appreciated. I always thought you tightened truss rods clockwise but I guess not.
I wonder if I was just unlucky ( as well as being a numpty) with the neck. They are quite a soft wood so must be prone to more movement? Has anyone else had problems with low action consistent across the fretboard with Elwoods?
Such a shame because as everyone says, the sound, feel, look and quality for the price is great.
I have emailed Adrian. Let’s see if he has the Christmas spirit.
hard to say. 1st time i hear about such problems as a dealer and a customer however if bass was bought used i suppose its hard to know what happened to it before you owned it.

So here is a tragic story. Acquired a lovely Elwood from this site about a year ago. Action has never been right. Mid to upper positions appreciably higher than first position. I hate that. Neck isn’t straight. Truss rod tightens anti clockwise and was already maxed out when I bought it. Bridge saddles can’t go any lower.
So being the idiot that I am, I took the neck off yesterday, loosened the truss rod then re tightened and, bang, the nut came off with an inch of rod with it. ?
I will contact Adrian tomorrow, I guess my options are limited to ordering a replacement neck unless miraculously someone can fit a new nut as the break is so close to the nut..unless it’s a welded unit.
if anyone has any experience of a situation like this, knows a great fixer in the London area, knows what the nut size is, or has bought a replacement neck from Adrian, I would be eternally grateful for any advice you can provide.
These basses have a lovely sound and nice feel so I do want to sort unless economically stupid.
Thanks, David
Martin Petersen at the Gallery is still one of the very best I have met. If somebody can fix it in the UK its definitely him.
If you wanna order a new neck be aware they'll need the Body anyways.

The only ones who haggle are the Americans. They're the only ones making offers below dealer price on a very regular basis.
Last one offered me 1240 USD on a 2000 USD Elwood I have in stock. And then gets sort of offended when i turn him and starts PM's me on Reverb swearing he's gonna give it a good home....
Actually not even "haggling" in my books , just plain rude and offensive -

Are there any Stenback owners on basschat? I love the look of these and every time someone plays one it seems to be like some sort of bass spiritual awakening.
I know they stopped taking orders and there is no website anymore, is there a huge waiting list? He also mentioned exciting developments which they never said any more about on facebook.
Just interested to know more I guess.

Well tom is building 15 basses per year roughly so the more time on emails , the less time building , and he's alone ....
-
if thats the ones i think about they're not walnut but tainted ash.
i had one in stock , amazing JB , sounded nuts but on the heavy end of things -
built between 82 and mid 84 roughly , after went on to be "A serial" ...... from 84 to 86 ... etc and so on

Nice. Been looking for a lefty version for over a year now.

good luck , from geeking around they estimate that 10% of JV instruments were done lefty.... -

I'm liking these ideas!
I might have to start with the 2 necks option & then at a later date, get a 2nd loaded body built.
you'll then need to send the neck to adrian or to the shop , to make sure the neck is perfect fit ....
(i had a customer asking same) -
Adrian told me the configurator is very complicated to do and program , more options and things will be added as they go along
there's a FB group "public peace configurator" where you can go and post your feedback
I'm a little disappointed the configurator isn't fully complete yet, I'm not GASing for a jazz style bass, however I am DESPERATE for a decent P currently and some of my wants are very specific.
The configurator however is a phenomenal idea and something more brands should look in to adding to their website, it'll simplify the process of getting any custom bass ordered!

The custom configurator is now live guys ! ;-)

I had a customer asking for the same sort of vibe , it came out a sputnik with solid color is a bit cheaper ...
Just asked , bolt on is not possible ... so solid color is the only way to bring price a bit down.

I have no idea but he can eventually do a bolt on? No idea, you need to ask him
Question, I really like the Sputnik, but I notice it's always the most expensive model but does anyone know if Adrian could cater for a more budget Sputnik? I guess the price comes from the premium woods used for the Sputnik so do you reckon he could do it cheaper with non premium materials?
I'm probably best off emailing Adrian but thought I would ask here too.
