Altho i'm not a fan of Iron Maiden i read an interview where Steve Harris said he used 3 fingers which is why he is able to do those fast triplets. I tried it at the time to see and yep it made sense. Dave
-
I started to use all my fingers when i started listening to Jack Bruce back in early 80's. I was reasonably good at that technique too but over the years i've kind of fallen back to 2 fingers if playing with my band or gigging. At home i still dabble a bit for fun with all but my little finger. I don't use that technique enough nowadays to do it live tho. Dave

Not listened to that Rush song since its heyday. Forgot how great it was. Great tribute to a great drummer and band. Dave

What music really gives you a huge lift?

I find this album really cheers me up. Kind of happy prog -
I'm on my way to the airport right now, get the beer in the fridge. Have you arranged the flights for our 15 piece band plus support crew of 12 techs. Dave

Obviously some of the well known luthiers basses will be a lot cheaper 2nd hand if that's an option for you. I've seen some Overwaters go for silly money on BC. No idea why they don't sell for more on the 2nd hand market. I have 2 Overwaters and they are fantastic basses. Quite a clean sound tho and maybe not what you are looking for from a PJ style bass. 2nd hand ACG basses are worth a look too WAL are still silly money 2nd hand but they arent PJ anyway Dave

+1 Chris did some work for me on my Warwick Thumb and gave me a shot of one of his own basses and i was very pleased indeed. Knows his stuff. Dave

Stan Evans, wife's name is Carol. She used to be head of teaching in Argyle area i think. Stan worked at BOC Gases with me Dave -
I'm really sad and googled it. Seems its an original 4001S from 1964. Its apparently been repaired and refurbished several times over the years tho which Chris believed helped him achieve his particular sound. SAD i know but i'm still in Lock down up here and nothing better to do. Dave

I used to curl my thumb round the neck up until last year when i was getting cramp in my little and ring fingers. Googled it and found it could be because of bad technique. I now keep my thumb on back of neck and no problem since. Been playing for 44 yrs now so maybe its just age related that it makes a difference. It was only during long extended rehearsals or long gigs. Fine now tho.............well i was before lock down so back to square one again when we get back to playing in bands again. Dave

He was 6' 3" or 1.93m so probably quite big. Maybe Ric made a short scale bass back then ? Dave

What was the bass. Looks like a Jazz in your pic. If so i'm curious why you changed the pick ups and what did you replace them with. ? Post a couple of pics of the bass. Always good to see a professional bassists tools of the trade. Why not give us a we rig run down. Could be an interesting read. I like to hear what pro-bassists use and why, but then again i'm a sad old bass geek. Dave

That thought went thru my head too

I've broken a string once in 44yrs

Nowadays i would always have a back up bass at a gig more so for a quick change-out in event of a bass failing for any reason. I even carry a spare lightweight amp head for same reason. Dave

Love the Stingray tone but having tried one in 80's i found the necks a bit too wide for my tastes and it put me off. My hands have adapted a bit more these days so maybe i should give one another try. Dave

That'll teach you for going to school and learning to read Nice wee collection having 12 basses. I used to have 10 but slowly reducing them. Now at 7 and looking to move another couple on at some point but no rush. If i sell 2 i will buy myself a Precision (either a Fender or maybe a Sandberg) Dave
-
My VM4 is now my goto bass for everything. With a little bass boost and everything else flat (or mid point) it simply has the tone i've been looking for. If i want a little more mid bite i touch the pan towards the MM pick up. Likewise if i need that more P sounding bass a little touch towards the P pick up. I never need to move things much to get what i need for a song. I use it for all style of music. Its taken over from my Jazz as my Goto bass............at the moment. Dave

Not something i would usually listen to but that was very nice and refreshing to hear such a clear bass tone with beautiful technique. Thank you Dave
-
Nope. I have basses with sentimental value that i would never sell. If you're asking could i get by with just one bass then yes i could quite happily get along with just my Sandberg VM4. It does everything i need from a bass. Then again i do fancy a nice P bass Dave

Got the Toy Matinee album thru last week from US. Took 3 weeks to deliver. Fantastic album. If you don't already have it you should give it a listen on Youtube. Dave
-
Taken down due to technical issues

What are you listening to right now?

The bass player is well known on Youtube for doing bass reviews many of them relating to Rush of course but he is a phenomenal player who does pull some really fun faces while playing. -
For someone self taught you're doing a fantastic job and much appreciated by us. Dave

Been hoping you would do this one next from Cozy Powell album. Great to finally see the music for it. Will see if i've been doing it right all these years Thanks @Bilbo Dave
