So spoke the Wizard in his Mountain home. The Vision of his wisdom means we'll never be alone Dave

Sorry FAKE NEWS.

I've never been a huge fan of Yes but i liked Close To the Edge in its day but can't really listen to it now. My fav album of theirs is Going For The One. For me the production on that particular album sounded better than the others. I do like Gates of Delirium but i need to be in the right mood for it. Some parts of Close to the Edge i can listen to now and again. Oddly enough when i come across them when sifting thru Youtube clips i always enjoy them. I really like Jon Anderson's voice. Did see them as Yeggles in Glasgow. Was good but not quite the same. Dave

For me that's more about feel for a song. No expert and hopefully someone will come along and explain in more detail.
-
Its not something i think about when playing. It just sort of comes naturally but knowing my own personality and style of playing i know that when i'm driving a song it powers thru any minor mistakes. I tend to shut them out and just keep going no matter what. However i am versatile enough to follow a change in structure when a mistake is made. Perhaps its a case of "if you look like you know what you're doing others won't notice the mistakes" Dave

I've only ever known a few drummers that were 100% confident enough to add fills properly but they were the drummers i enjoyed most. It seems to bring out a more creative side of me on bass. I can add fills over some of their little fills. Dave
-
Was he suggesting you were subconsciously dragging a bit behind the drums. I'm talking milliseconds here and not something an audience in general would notice. That's just my curiosity asking. Dave

Think i should have added that to the options. Its probably more realistic for most bands. Dave

Why do bassists seem to be so obsessed with sustain?
dmccombe7 replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
Not something i've ever really bothered about. Typically my bass notes will sustain for a bar or at end of a song just run out but even then its usually just a few bars worth. Dave -
Can you give us a bit more detail
-
What i have noticed is that i don't count bars from start to finish but certain parts of the song i will count thru the bars. Usually the vocal parts are easy its the guitar solos i tend to count bars. Dave

Not sure this has been asked but will go for it anyway. Within a band set up do you follow the drummer or do you lead the drummer. In most cover bands i've been in, i tend to lead more than follow the drummer. I think its because i put a lot into learning my part that i am very confident when playing. I take my timing from the drummer at the start and just go for it. In originals bands it seems to be the other way around and i love following a good drummer. Again its maybe down to how i develop and learn an original bass part. Think a lot depends on the how good or confident the drummer is. Dave

Your guitarist is a better bass player than you!
dmccombe7 replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
Can't say i've ever really come across a guitarist that was a better bass player than me. I did know one guitarist that showed me how to play slap bass but that was all he was good at. That was back in my early days. Current guitarist did play bass in an Ozzy tribute band but he freely admits he's not a bassist. He did a great job with them tho. Current drummer has stated i'm one of the best bass players he's ever played with and he's done a lot of serious touring including arena gigs. That was probably my best compliment over the years. Used Bass Direct few times and was impressed enough to drive to the shop from Glasgow area and wasn't disappointed. I've never been disappointed in any way. Dave

Cheers @Bilbo always loved that bassline. That little run down from the D to A he does every now and again was always the hook for me. Great album often forgotten by many Camel fans. The production on it was first class. Dave

Not heard that in a lot of years Rob. Nice one. Dave

If its 2023 i think many musicians will lose interest in their bands as they find alternative hobbies or pastimes. More than likely i could be one of them. I'm already falling into the "cant be bothered practicing the set lists. Dave

I still have my old separates still in use today. Sony record deck - 1976 Nad 3220 power amp - 1980 ish Sony CD player - 1980 ISH Phillips CD Recorder twin deck CD - 2000 ish Mission speakers Bose speakers Speakers run in parallel. Still have all mine and my wife's vinyl and CD's. I very rarely stream or download albums. Only occasional songs i need to learn for bands i'm in.
