  1. When i use my index finger as a pick i find the rhythmic feel with my wrist is definitely more of a groove than when using fingerstyle but i just can't translate that feel when using a pick. I also noted that i have a percussive thing going on when i use the index finger as a pick. No idea how that happened but i liked it and just went with it. It fills a song out a lot more altho not ideal or suitable in some situations. Maybe that's just down to practice as i started using my index finger more as a fun element when doodling in the house but i enjoyed it so much i found myself doing it a lot. Obviously the increasing use of a flexi-wrist can be helpful in other aspects of life. 😂 Dave
  2. I play fingerstyle but i'm not snobby about it and enjoy good bassists no matter how they do it. If its good, its good. Simple as that. I started with a pick for first few yrs then got into Jazz rock and changed to fingerstyle but i was caught between both styles and chopped and changed depending on what i was listening to. I liked Jazz rock but was mainly playing classic rock or prog. Eventually i settled on fingerstyle and just found it easier. I can play using my index finger as a pick but struggle with an actual pick and end up getting cramp after a few songs. Dave
  3. I'm with you on that. Most people don't want to witness a complicated bass solo unless they are extreme bassists themselves. I personally don't want to hear a bass solo at a gig unless its RUSH of course. Dave
  4. What you played for a solo was perfect for that song Daryl. You don't need to over-complicate a solo to make it entertaining. I'd rather hear an entertaining bass than a flash one with no groove or feel to it. You nailed that one for me. Dave
  5. Liking that Daryl. Bass sounds nice with studio headphones on and its actually quite a nice mix. That's a nice wee bass line too. Maybe vocal could be a touch higher but otherwise its good to me. How's the ankle now. ? Dave
  6. I was very curious what this was Rob and had to open it. To be fair i really enjoyed the song. Do you play guitar too ? Dave
  7. My apologies that i didn't pick up on that point. I was too focused on bass things. Congrats and hope all went well for both baby and Mom. Dave
  8. The Brother to Brother album was a turning point in my musical direction when it came out. Not just the bass but the drumming was exceptional and the full production was clear and distinct. Just a perfect album. Have a wee listen to Vannellis recent bassist Sandin Wilson's solo album "Into My World" which is pretty good. He was coached by Jimmy Haslip for a bit and Haslip suggested what fretless to go for. Dave
  9. Looks great Daryl. Oddly enough i don't see you working there at the back of the van or were you getting the beers in. ? 😂🍺🍺 Dave
  10. We did Burn which is / was one of my fav DP songs to play. Also Stormbringer (also the name of the band) Copy of band set list from 2012. Dave Set List #1 - Ivory Blacks 20.7.12.docx
  11. very nice indeed. Dave
  12. Sounds good and curious what the bass is ? Dave
  13. Bet you're glad to be bacck at it and that is one nice rig you have there. What's the bass ? Dave
  14. didn't know you were tackling guitar charts too Rob. Not that i play guitar but it impresses me even more how you can do all this work and i know you generally make light of it but if it was that easy why are we not all doing it, including me ? Dave
  15. Yep def one of my bass heroes along with Neil Murray, Jack Bruce and of course Jeff Berlin. Also loved his tone on A Live Record. Dave
  16. Altho i saw them with Bernie Torme and John McCoy i cant say i was a big fan of them. Dave
  17. I meant Breathless. Cheers Mickey, now updated on original post. No idea where i got Pointless from. ? Bit of a Doh !!! moment there. 😂 Richard Sinclair was an incredible bassist / vocalist with some amazing techniques. I personally love "A Live Record" where you get to hear his playing. My fav album by Camel is actually "I Can See Your House from Here" which is the only tour i've seen them. Liked the "Nod and a Wink" album too but i think that was a bit of a tribute to Pete Bardens. Dave
  18. Oddly enough we didn't do any Gillan songs altho we did talk about Ted the Mechanic. Dave
  19. Hi Rob just listening to Camel Breathless album and there's a nice catchy wee riff on The Sleeper if looking for ideas. Dave
  20. I was jesting of course. Nowhere in Scotland can hide from the rain. To be honest i don't really mind the rain. Not been in Pitlochry for many years now. I generally stop at the outdoor adventure centre cafe in Ballinluig on my way North. Its approx half way to Loch Ness for me. Dave
  21. Never rains in Pitlochry. Its the centre of the known universe. Gorgeous area, one of my fav areas to drive thru. I no longer stop at Pitlochry these days as its always too busy. Maybe i should visit in winter months. Dave
  22. Rain here so at least its cooling down a bit. Hope the cold isn't too bad for you during the gig. Nothing worse. Dave
  23. I'm actually glad i'm not playing this weekend with all my Glam gear on it would be very warm. Today i will be mainly loafing. Dave
  24. Makes you work for your money on the night. 😂 I used to play in a "Friends of DP" tribute and we covered any band that was directly linked to DP which allowed us Rainbow, Whitesnake, DP and even Sabbath thru Dio. Loved playing Stargazer, that was one of my all time favs. So much energy and emotion in that song for a bassist. IMO of course. Dave
