I used to do exactly the same thing with my acoustic guitar until I turned up at one gig and found that it had accidentally re-tuned to DADGAD. I took me 18 months to get out of Fairport Convention
LMAO
Reliced indeed. It's Road Worn.
No. No No. No No No. Are you and Dad3353 related by any chance?
Thats the one! He still uses it now and its actually very good for intonation and setups because of the analogue needle I bet there a few quid on eBay and by that I mean a few like 2 or 3
Only if you include a battery as well...
Motorway? You were lucky. We had to take a B road in an old Commer van.

One mate at school had a Seiko analogue tuner that we all used to gather around once a week to get back to the start, Then over the next week some terrible ear tuning would result in them being about a semi tone out but in tune with themselves and this went on for about 2 years! Seriously, Ha.
I think that was my first tuner - had a mechanical needle that you had to get dead vertical? They cost about £30 when the average weekly wage was about £100 - so that was quite a few years ago... I only stopped using it about 3 or 4 years ago because it was hard to see the needle in the dark.
Pitchforks? You were lucky. We only had an old mouth organ.
Mouth organ? By 'eck you was posh - we had to tune up in a cardboard box on t'motorway...
one of the best bands i've ever been in had a guitarist who was 21 when i was 37... be both thought a lot of each other's playing so it was never an issue. sadly a lot of people see it as an obstacle...when it doesn't have to be.
For me it's not been too difficult as it seems to be very much a 'genre' thing. No, I wouldn't 'fit' in one of them there grunge thrash prog rock bands, but I wouldn't want to be there anyway.

I think a lot of this 'it goes out of tune in my gig bag' or 'it doesn't go out of tune in my gig bag' is due to the angle of the machine head key relative to the head when the bass is in tune. If it's parallel then it's going to stay in tune, if it's at a 45 degree angle then the weight of the bass and bag is going to try and rotate it until it is parallel when you lay it down on the back seat of the car...
I found this very old picture out of me and a mate , this was my first bass but i am ashamed to say i cant even remember what make it was but can remember the day i got it from a second hand music shop very clearly!
It's an old Kay - there was a thread around here about them a few weeks back IIRC.
Seriously though, its a pain innit, I'm lucky in that I found a couple of good bands of all old gits like me, but it took a while. Dunno about you, but I wouldnt be comfortable playing live with a band noticably much younger than me.
Doesn't really bother me too much, I've just picked up a job playing with a singer/songwriter that hasn't quite hit her 20th birthday yet. I'd like to think that I got the gig based on my charm, wit, sophistication and youthful looks...

The biggest point for me has to be the sellability of the product - I'm not into 'gigging' in rehearsal rooms or putting a lot of time and effort into something that there's never going to be an audience for. The musicians have to be of a certain standard - I'm happy to advise on arrangements but I'm not going to muck about showing a guitarist how to play an Em7. The ability to retain information - I accept people make mistakes but my patience wears thin if the same mistake appears time and time again. Personality and a sense of humour is a 'nice to have' but I'm more than able to play with people I don't partucularly like.

Or even one 8Ω cab per channel and then another 8Ω cab per channel for luck.

Some instruments seem to be more prone to going out of tune in transit than others: I know my JB will need tuning, I know my 6 will have a flat C and I know my NS EUB and SR will stay in tune. I don't bother tuning up prior to leaving for a gig. When I get to the gig I setup my rig and tune the basses at that point. I then recheck tuning just prior to going on stage. During the interval I check tuning again - even instruments I haven't played (I don't want to grab a spare instrument and find it's gone out of tune).
How many people on this forum could be given a pitch fork in A and tune accurately to that? Happens a lot in many musical genres and any musician worth their salt should be able to do it.
When I started playing, electronic tuners were rare and very expensive - pitch forks were the standard we all worked to.
We've all had them. You know the ones where you were convinced you'd get stabbed before you could get though the last song. Or you've turned up at a gig to play with a band you've never met before for a gig in front of a thousand people and you've left all your chord charts at home on the kitchen table.
Never had a truly disasterous gig. I suppose the nearest one would be at an outdoor carnival a few years ago where I was DI'd straight into the desk and the engineer forgot to add me into the foldback mix. Trying to play in time when all you can hear is the slapback from a building about half a mile away is quite an experience...

Colin Greenwood Sig Precision, Just a fanasy of mine
Why not just get a normal Fender Precision with tortoise shell plate and maple 'board instead? It's not like there is anything special about the bass-it's just a stock P-bass.
+1 Was just thinking that myself. -
Wouldnt mind getting a fretless to have a go on but would have to be lined as i have never even tried playing one before but do love the sound of them . how easy are they to get into after being used to playing frets and would i get away with playing one all night at a gig for rock numbers where a fretless wouldnt normaly be used. i guess i would just have to have another bass ready to to do some songs that didnt suit it !
Some things suit fretless far better than others, I've seen players using them for rock and, despite what the player may think, they sound cr*p to my ears. Slower ballady or atmospheric type stuff seems to work far better, but you need to not be afraid of wandering up into the area above the 7th fret if you want to make it sing instead of just grumble to itself in the background. Don't worry too much about the lines or you'll limit the number of basses you can choose from - I found them useful for the first week but have pretty much ignored them ever since and just use the edge markers if I need a point of reference. They confuse the audience as well - I have had several bass players coming up to me after gigs asking how I get a fretless sound. Thinking back to my first fretless foray, the hardest part was getting enough precision to be able to play consistantly - even finger angle on the fretboard can make a note flat or sharp.

Perhaps try slackening the screws and shoving a little bit of foam rubber between the handle and the cab before doing the screws up again.

We put everything (except drums) through the desk and use AUX1 to set up the monitor mix. Although we only have one monitor amp, we each have a monitor with a volume control so we can adjust it according to what we want/need. Once we've got an on stage mix using backline and monitors that we're happy with only then do we then set up front of house.
Sorry if this seems a strange post but i wondered if anyone else keeps there plucking finger nails a bit long to get a little more attack, i cant seem to get on with a plec so its just something i have got used to i think i am not talking girl long long but just enough so i canstill play smooth if need be with the finger tips but also nail it if need be !
Yep. Not hugely long though, just enough to catch the string.
Hoping to pull the trigger on an Ibanez Promethean P5210 combo soon but was just wondering if anybody has any ideas of how I would use effects pedals with it, bearing in mind it doesn't have a loop. Obviously, plugging straight into the input is one way, but for your chorus, compressor type pedals a loop would be the best thing to use. Any ideas of a way round this?
There is no practical way round it unfortunately. Bit of an oversight on the old design front I'd say...
