1. The beauty for me is in the compact, efficient and simple nature of my rig... My gigging set up that serves me well! 2. BIG thanks to all those who have replied and helped me out with my choice here, and huge thumbs up to the Barefaced company for being so helpful. My Super Midget arrived today, along with my GK MB500 head... I'm blown away by how light and loud this cab is, and the tones I've got so far are great for me. Just to help others who are thinking of buying, measurements are one thing but seeing things together always helps me in terms of perspective! Here's my trusty Markbass CMD102P right next to my new EVEN MORE lightweight and compact rig.
3. Haha no worries there for me Conan, I have the skinniest fingers known to man, but thanks - Alex actually said the same thing to me on the phone about the controls being very close together. I can sacrifice that for the lovely slim width!
4. Hi again Alex - ah fantastic, thank you so much for the help, nice talking to you and honestly the advice was much appreciated. Obviously it was ten mins well spent as Ive gone ahead and ordered the next day, so hopefully that helps make talking to someone who hasn't got a scooby doo about amp heads a little more bareable! Alex (or anyone else who cares to answer) one more thing - lots of guys speaking volumes on the Tec Amp Puma 500. Would this be a suitable 'partner' for the super midget? Hilarious moment by the way when I phoned the music store and said.... 'Hi, do you have a barefaced midget in stock...?' I only realised afterwards how this might sound to the uneducated ear!!!
5. Hi Alex - just ordered the super midget from a stockist of yours, should be arriving with me tomorrow! I'd have ordered direct but obviously you guys have a small lead time, where as this was next day. The helpful guy I spoke to yesterday on the phone said that lots of guys are using a GKmb500, which gets really good reviews on line - any thoughts on this? Really looking forward to getting my new cab tomorrow anyway, and whilst you are on the staff member I spoke to at your place was incredibly helpful and really explained things to me which helped in more laymans terms. Fantastic customer service!
6. Thanks Paul - alot of guys tell me that TC power outputs are still very misleading?
7. TC BH550... anyone else care to expand on this? The only reason I like TC (and my only experience of them) is because I play with a sprectracomp compressor pedal which I think is amazing. Any other thoughts on the heads?
8. Thanks for all the comments here guys. After looking at as many options as I could, I called the Barefaced company for there view also. Not sure who I spoke to but they were incredibly helpful, really took the time to find out what I needed, asked me what strings I use, what bass, pickup config, what amp I use now, how I generally have it set... the knowledge of whoever I spoke too was frightening! They have actually said that although the One 10's would do the job, for my requirements I'd be better off with a super midget or super compact for what I'm doing. +10 points for Barefaced on a customer service level, truly brilliant and the guy couldn't help me enough. ANYWAY..... Looks like I'm going with a either the super midget or the super combo, with possibly a GKMB500 head. Anyone want to weigh in with any more appreciated advice before I take the punt haha!
9. Also looking at Barefaced amps... two of the 1 x 10 maybe, stacked up - very versatile as although it's two cabs they are both tiny and can squeeze in the car around other gear? Possibly ran with a mark bass head?
10. Thanks for all your replies so far, all very much appreciated!
11.
How small and light do you want to go? There are 2 Bergantino AE112's in the classifieds. They are fantastic sounding light weight cabs. I'd also checkout an Aguilar amp (TH350 or TH500) and 2 Barefaced One10 cabs. You can't get smaller or lighter. I like the TH500 so much I bought another as a backup and I know a keyboard player who uses a BF One10 to handle the bottom end in his Hammond/piano rig, in a loud rock blues band. I'm a BF fan and I was pretty sceptical about the One10 until I heard that keyboard rig.
Thanks Chris - I'd like to go as small and as light as possible, without comprimising sound. I'm DI'd literally every gig into our QSC rig with a nice bass bin and two tops, so I'd like to go as small and light as I can get away with!
12. Hi all, I've been gigging with a markbass combo cmd102p for about 5 years now. It's awesome, light, and I generally love the sounds I can get from it. If at all possible, I'd like to go even smaller and lighter than the Markbass... and I've seen the TC electronic combo, the RS210C. Every time we gig, I'm D'ID into our Pa (QSC gear) so really the amp becomes my on stage monitor. We play weddings generally, anything from 100 - 300 people. Could anybody advise me on... 1) How the amps compare in terms of sound? 2) How the amps compare weight wise? (mega important to me, gigging two or three times a week every week, dragging big heavy amps about is my pet hate!) Thanks to anyone who helps!
13. Bought a nice P/J bass from Davy a couple of weeks ago, good communication, fair price and met half way. Top bloke who can be totally trusted.
14. Hi Lozz - sorted. I took it to a guy who I know who is great with electronics and it looks like the pot has been bypassed and the wiring all altered, esentially leaving the bass with a Duff 'tone'. It's either been used by a big fan or a guy in a GnR tribute I would suspect. Getting fixed anyway, so should be sounding as good as it looks before long! MoonBassAlpha - I know, I can't believe I didn't just compare the two like for like. what an absolute idiot! Thanks for your help guys.
15. Haha I make a much better brew than I play bass lines believe me!! So it seems you're hunch was right, the sound is totally different through the white jazz special, though the picks ups do look different - the poles are smaller. I can get a classic P sound, a J sound, and a blend - probably like the black one should sound. That TBX is either bypassed or broken, or there's a problem with the wiring somewhere. There's a guy near me called Nigel Stockbridge who's an absolutely incredible luthier so I'll book it in I think and get him to take a look, and see what he can find. Me opening it up is a recipe for disaster! Thanks for your help and advice, it's much appreciated.
16. Thanks for all your help Lozz, brilliant, you even got the part number - I thought you might have went one step further and bought it for me, and even installed it?! Haha! I'm starting to think it's been by passed. That pot is totally dead, it has no effect on anything no matter what else I do with the other two pots or the three way selector. Yeah I always wanted a black and a white one, for me the look of these things is brilliant, and then when I tried the neck I couldn't believe my luck - mine are both the clear necks with the stripe by the way, not the black necks Duff had. I bought them both blind, the black one which I suspect is older (it's certainly more used!!!) from an advert in BGM, the white one from a music shop in the Netherlands strangely, took a punt on them both really buying blind. The black one is the better of the two in my opinion, but the neck on them both is absolutely for me the most comfortable I've ever played. Just had a thought. Why the HELL have I not just compared the white to the black sound wise, plugged them both in and tested side by side?! If I had a brain I'd be dangerous... will let you know! Thanks again for your help buddy.
17. Hi Lozz, thanks for that! I'm starting to wonder if the previous owner has somehow 'Duffed it up' as you aptly named it, and played with the electronics to make it always sound that way! Been messing this morning and the pot furthest right seems to do NOTHING at all when I'm turning it, no natter which was the three way selector is. Is that the tone control on these basses? Thanks again, Steve.
18. Hi thanks for replying - I'm using D'Dario strings, sometimes I use Ernie Balls. Both pick ups work but the tone is just so 'clunky', not like s normal P bass at all. Any suggestions? I don't know wether it's just the pick ups on these basses and how they are made to sound!
19. Hi all I was originally drawn to these basses watching Duff Mckagen as a youngster, and when one cam up for sale 5 years ago I took a punt and bought it - and it's been my main gigging bass ever since, I have played 99% of my weekly wedding gigs on it! I love the look, and most of all the feel. The neck is incredible and just feels perfect for me. However, I'm struggling with the sound a little, and can ignore it no longer! It sounds 'twangy' and 'clunky' all the time, like a really good Duff sound, very mid and treble. If I was in a Guns tribute it would literally be amazing, but for the stuff we play it's not ideal - but I don't want to play anything else. I'm a major novice when it comes to equipment and pick ups especially. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice? Do I change them and go for a diffferent set, could it be a problem with the tone circuit... any advice appreciated. Thanks!
20. T
Pretty low by my standards but i'd be happy to take some height measurements above the fretboard if you had anywhere particular you wanted me to measure the action. Yes your just down the A19!
To be honest Davy as long as it's low and can potentially go lower if needs be I'd be ok with it, is that cream neck binding? How's the neck, P bass style is it and how chunky? Haha yeah just an hour up the glorious A19, my main route to what seems like evey gig!
21. Really fancy this, what's the action like? I'm just down the road in Stockon, could come to collect if I went for it...
22.
Another Ibanez SR fan here. I only have a 505 & a 605, so fairly modest instruments, but still brilliant. Would fit your spec and price range perfectly, but aware that the string spacing (on my two at least) is around 16.5mm (this is an extra plus for me, but not everybody's cup of tea).
Which is the better of the two count bassy? Both string spacing the same? Are you saying for some people it might be a bit tight?
23. Thanks all. Coincidentally I bought a Cort cheapo last week, for £180.00 - just as an experiment. For the money it plays incredibly well but wouldn't hold up to to the gigging and the pick ups aren't great (but good for the cash!) I may look at a more expensive Cort, and lots of people talk about the ibanez stuff!
