1.
If someone were to put out those songs as an album, although perhaps change the lyrics, it would probably be better than most of the stuff out there at the moment. Also, great bass playing on the second song (it's how far i've got through listening). You definitely manage the whole being supportive, but without disappearing role which is what i aim for.
All those songs are realesed on various albums it just that the whole Christian thing puts people off so they only get seen in Christian organisations...I've just heard from a friend that when Chris Moyles was talking about it he said he wanted to play "Happy Day" (the version from yesterday played during the baptisms - not the original) on the radio cause he really liked it. "You definitely managed the whole being supportive, but without disappearing role which is what i aim for." Really appreciate that...that's exactly what I aim for too.
you could probably listen to his show again on the BBC iPlayer thing, just skip to about an hour an 10 minutes into it...
will do...thanks
2. Hey all, thanks so much for all the kind comments... It was quite an experience which I doubt I will ever have again...great fun! @docter_of_the_bass your right...I do remember you being there when I tried the head out, you told me I wouldn't regret buying it...I bought it and didn't regret it...I also got the Markbass 151p speaker cab too all of which I used yesterday...I'm really please with the tone as it came over on the TV...I don't know if you remember the cab I used to try it out, but if you do you'll be pleased to know that I have since covered it so that it no longer looks like a coffee table. @philsimmonds Hey Phil, long time no see. Mimo was playing on the middle two songs if you get a chance to catch it on the iplayer. Unfortunately if you came to the church you wouldn't actually see me cause I've had to move about 20 miles north of Peterborough now (for work) so I go to a local smaller church...Strangely no-one else in the entire church will play bass (playing in that venue is a bit intimidating at first) so they asked me to come back for this. A few of you mentioned how it isn't your cup of tea...to be honest its not my cup of tea genre wise...but obviously as I Christian I enjoy it from that perspective. The first two songs were fun to play but the more ballad-type ones can be a bit of a drag. I'm more into jazz and funk so I just throw in a bit of funk when I get the chance. The Electric guitarist (standing next to me) is also a bit of a funk fan so we have a laugh...check out his James Brown Chords in the Bridge of the second song...you'll know it when you hear it. Unfortunately there's not much of a scene for churches with funky big bands, anyone fancy setting one up? @benwhiteuk Is that true???? my life is complete....I usually listen but I believe I was changing my sons nappy at that point this morning. Overall it was a great time ...despite the 8 hour rehearsal the day before...and I'm well chuffed with the tone on the TV...I'm just please I was in tune!
3. Thanks all, yeah it's gonna be quite an experience...don't worry I won't be sneaking any solo's in, although the first two songs are pretty funky so I will be getting my groove on!
4. Hi all, In case anyone is interested I'm going to be playing bass live on BBC1 on Sunday morning between 10am and 11am. I play at a big church in Peterborough called KingsGate Community church and our Penticost Service is going to be broadcast Live on the BBC...I'm very nervous but I'm sure It will be great fun. It's not your traditional sort of church so lots of lively/funky music...I'll be the one with the bass (6 String fretless Warwick and MarkBass Amp) so take a look and any constructive (or not so constructive) feedback gladly received! BBC1 Sunday 31st May 10am-11am
5. I'm sure a lot of you will have heard of the new scientific based search engine "wolfram.com" which lets you search for facts instead of websites...Have a look, its really interesting. Well I just noticed it has loads of music theory information which could potentially be very useful for all you theory/jazz geeks out there, and beginners who want a quick definithion with out having to bay a 4000page "Chord encyclopedia" For example: typing in "C Dorian" it will show you the notes in manuscript/keyboard and by name...but interestingly if also lists things such as Related modes...I haven't tried it yet cause I'm at work but there is a button which will play the notes and chords too...I just thought people might find it quite useful...it works for complex chords too...it me that "Cbmin7 chord" is made of Cb, Ebb, Gb, Bbb...(it even get the note names correct e.g. Ebb instead of D!) Anyway just thought I would point it out in case anyone would find this useful...especially for learning theory. (N.B it is still in the first stages so it doesn't know 9th chords plus) "C Dorian" Related modes: Ionian mode on Bflat Phrygian mode on D Lydian mode on Eflat Mixolydian mode on F Aeolian mode on G Locrian mode on A Alternate scale names: Gregorian scale 8 Eskimo heptatonic Kafi Thaat 2902 (12-digit binary) Hope some one finds it useful
6. Our church has a Ultrabass combo as its "in house" bass amp. I had never used it until I couldn't find my cables on Monday night (house move) for my Markbass rig.... so I just plugged my bass into the behringer combo....I nearly vomited!
7.
1215 with 12-band valve preamp instead of the usual solid state jobbie, from the early 1990's.
I used to have this: Its the 15" 12band eq and valve pre, it was called the 1215-12 and had the GP12X head. peavey still have a link to a picture of it there and you can see the head (with useful manual) here The full list of legacy products is here: But I cant see any 1215V so Im guessing it is the 1215-12...in which case it's a great amp....I loved it, I only got rid of it because I went towards the minimalist amp route and got a markbass LMII. It is extremely flexible and lush tone....no real negatives except weight and sometimes being lost due to too many controls. The 1215-12 has more bells than you can shake a whislte at and I just wasn't making use of them, it had: passive and active input 12 band eq (+toggle bypass) pre-shape swith (the trace elliot "smile" eq) which can be combined with the graphic eq valve stage (to get the most of if you need to use a combonation of the gain and a seperate valve stage "valve drive" dial) harmonic emphesis (never used that) a very nice dual compression noise reduction effects loops swith mute DI out (pre/post swith) foot switch effects loop with paralell/serial switch and seperate level control two signal outs (one dedicated tune out) it also has a useful three point input level gage with a very classy thumbs up thumbs down picture lol hope that helps
8.
and they have all the variations you can imagine covered....
except a LMII with mute
9.
Oh and if you paint the surface with black paint underneath where the joins will go, it kind of disguises any gaps you can see where I painted along the intended joins
Don't tell any one but on the 1mm gap I had left a ran a black permanent marker down it ....voila....it vanished
10. Yeah, on the whole I'm really pleased with the way it turned out...it was a bit tricky at times, but everythign was nice and neat, it was just the bits where the two edges meet that was trick...they all went well except the last edge...I ended up with a small gap on the back (less than a milimeter and hardly visibly...but very annoying when all teh rest went so well. To be honest I doubt anyone except me will ever noticed so yeah I'm really pleased...the best tip was on the CPC website which suggested "rolling" the cab over the carpet which worked really well. I just cant believe how nicely it fits in with my markbass cab now, really pleased...and it sounds awsome!
11. Hi, Thanks for the tips on getting carpet...I always think its good for people to report back after following advice. I've finished the cab and its gone from being a coffee table to matching almost perfectly with my markbass rig. I actually built the cab before I bought the Markbass gear but amazingly it is exactly the right size for a nice 500W 1 X15 and 2 X 10 stack....NICE...really please with the outcome of the CPC black cab carpet...now I just need to look after it so that it doesn't get scruffy! Thanks again for the help...(sorry camara phone photo)
12.
as far as hearing the bottom end I you really need to make sure you have professionally moulded ear pieces with decent monitors.... The moulds are gonna cost you the money.... you can get decent monitors from about £100 upwards...
I'm not sure of the exact model but there are proper in ear monitor ear buds...so the moulded one's really make the difference? intersting...thanks.
13. This thread is really intersting...didn't realise how many people were using IEM. I play at a big church (2000 seater Auditorium with top PA) which only use IEM for all musicians. So they have the full pro inear setup...I have a couple of questions for you guys though: 1. any of you guys play a fretless (especially 5 string+) I've been playing with IEM for years so I'm well used to them but I've never been able to hear enough low end to keep my low notes in tune (especially on B string), so even in this situation I have my cab on stage to give me the low end fill, anyone else find this? 2. I've only ever used IEM in this big auditorium situation with a dedicated Monitor mix engineer, I like using IEM but never thought of using it in a situation where I don't get a dedicated mix too...how do you guys work with in ears if you dont get a full dedicated mix with it? I'd be intersted since the idea of using them in other situations is appealing Cheers, appreciate the feedback
14.
The CPC stuff is fine, I used it on my O10.5s
@andyonbass Thanks for the pic...its really good to see the stuff actually on a cab. Any tips on getting the stuff on as neat and tidy as yours is?
15. Thanks for all the help guys, that blue aran site looks good unfortunatly they didn't have any of the stuff in stock so I went for the CPC stuff...I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for all the help!
16. I've had my LMII for nearly 3 years now. I really love it. (only ever played the head but the combo has exactly the same head.) I guess the important things I would suggest you think about (and make yourself aware of) are: 1. It is a vary natural sound....if you like the natural sound of your bass (and have a good quality bass) then I get a feeling you'll love Markbass. 2. The DI is post EQ only on a lot of the modles (Since I run my amp fairly flat this is not a problem and doesn't "Over Colour" the sound...never had a sound guy complain but some dont like this (you can mod it to pre EQ yourself with an internal switch) 3. No tuner mute. This is the biggest complaint you'll hear about a lot of markbass gear...I just use a Planet Waves circuit breaker cable. MarkBass have just release some new products as NAMM 2009: LMIII: I think this is similar to LMII but has Post/Pre EQ switch on the DI and a line out level dial Little Mark 800: As above but with 800W (instead of 500W) Little Mark Tube 800: As above but with Tube pre and the very much needed Mute (why are they not on the other models....I'll never know) it also has phantom power. You'll have to ask other people for views of things like the the digital power amp and tube amps...I've never used them.
17. Hi, I'm a reader but dont alwasy get chance to post...since I read at work! but could really do with some help sourcing some carpet to cover a DIY cab I built, Originally I vanished it but it's starting to look dated and rather like a coffee table so I'm looking to cover it. In the sticky on DIY cabs I saw: "Cab covering and grille were from www.allangordon.co.uk, I much prefer it to the round ones that Maplin (et al) do. [RichardH note - allangordon are now sadly not trading - I understand retirement was the reason]" and the pic this went with was the sort of thing I'm looking for so if anyone knows where I can get it (or tell me if the Maplin stuff is any good) that would be great! N.B. the closer it can match my Markbass cabs black carpet the better. Thanks!
18. Just seen this...man would I love that bass...Unfortuantely my new born baby is practiacally eating all my money....unless you want to swap the bass for a 3 month old pooing/crying machine (ready supply of milk nessecary).
19. yeah thats exactly my thoughts, could be alot of hard work for a little gain (or gain taht could be solved by the drummer learning to keep better time). Also not all song have drums from teh start but i guess we'd just have to have hi-hats for some timing, thats what we did in the old band.
20. Hey people, Just looking for any knowledge on using click tracks on a live stage. Here's the situation. My click track experience: I spent a year an a "gap year" in a band which play chart and pop music,we used a mini disk player with a backing track and the drummer had a click to keep us all in time with the backing track. I've also used them during recording (obviously) to keep in time with the track. So I have reasonable experience of using them but always as a tool to stay in time with the backing track/recording. The current situation: I play bass in a church band (big church , for the UK) its a 1 year old purpose built 2,000 seater auditorium its great to play in with quality gear, we all use in ear monitoring on the big stage...usualy about 9 musicians and 5 singers. Our drummer is an awesome drummer, he is serisouly good for some one who drumms only at church, however the old joke is true (how do you know if a drummer is at the door? the knocks get faster) So the powers at be have decided to try to add a click track in order to keep things a bit tighter and to stop some of the irratic speed changes which happen every now and again. Any thougths on this? 1. Is it a common technique to use? I've never heard of using clicks for generic live work unless its for a backing track but I guess if its the only way to get your drummer in time? 2. Should all musicians have the click (have any of you bassists ever had a click in your ears for live work) 3.And the main question is what technology to use, My experience of using it was in a band with a 25 song set list so it was just a seperate click for each track which the drummer started from a minidisk player next to him, but at church we have hundreds of songs (most do have a tempo mark thankfully!) so is it just a metronome??? is it the drummer who controls it, 4.Church music often has to have seamless links between songs...how does this work if a new beat has to be set up...its not like a mini disk play where you just hit track 5 and go?? a slick..surely going straight into another song at adifferent tempo is near impossible unless teh click is sounding at the new spend at the end of the 1st song. Sorry this is so long, unfortunatly as the only one who has used clicks before they're all looking to me? Cheers
21. Also just thought....my old bass tutor used to ALWAYS play his warwick with 'bass tone control' on full... It wasn't my preference but worked for him and was certainly a 'meaty' sound. Maybe this sort of 'drastic' EQing will suit you too?
22. Warwicks are the sort of bass where you love the sound or hate it, Warwicks are very well made respected basses and unless you got a dodgy one you shouldn't be needing to modify it...I would certainly never dreamof modifying mine!! (unless its a rockbass...im guessing its not) You might be able to get the sound you're looking for through modification (I'm not an expert on that) but if you dont like 'the sound of wood' which is fair enough...sound being so opinion based...then you'er probably wasting you're money trying to pull the warwick character out of a warwick. Why not fined a bass you do like the sound of and flog the warwick...warwick a popular it should be too hard to sell and even you cant afford your dream Fender there are plenty of quality basses out therewhich cost less, especially if you look secondhand?
23. +1 on the ebay thing... My warwick streamer LX 6 string fretless was £850 off ebay...less than half price and new condition!! I love my warwick but they're not exactly cheap from new!! plus the older basses are considered better builds (I cant remeber the dat but somewhere around 2000 the build process changed ans the die hard warwick fans (not that I'm one of them) swear by the older warwicks (the neck is meant to be the main difference)
24. Hey there, hope you are getting the cone problem sorted!! just wanted to say (regarding the head situation) That until a year ago I had a TE combo (1990's 15" 12 band 300W....) I absolutley loves it...I was a die hard TE fan (pre gibson and peavey) but then came the great day that I heard a Mark bass amp!! within 2 weeks I had sold the entire combo for the LMII head and I will never look back!!! Seriously if you looking for a quality head which I've never heard any bad reviews about then go for the LMII!! Going from the rediculous features of a TE (12 band eq, 3 band compressor, harmonic emphesisor(never did found out what that was meant to do!), the list goes on) moving to the simple eq and 2 filters of teh LMII i thought I would but restricted but quite teh opposite, I love it. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert since I've never had the oppotunity to play the other heads which you have mentioned but you certainly wouldn't regret the Mark bass...I garantee it! All the best let us know how it goes
25. SimBass
