EEK. It's my debut on backing at practice today...
OldGit replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
About 200 years ago I saw a TV thing about a woman in a band singing for the first time and the line that stuck with me was "Go on, show them what you can do" We Brits are usually too shy and retiring for our own good. Your average American would be full of "look at me" bravado and just go for it. Now and then we have to do that too. This is one of those situations ... I didn't used to sing at all. My voice was weak. Then I discovered that my real singing voice was not the one I'd been using. Rather than the thin and wispy mouse like vocals I was doing I tried my full on, loud, dark brown baritone, reminiscent of Scott Walker and previously reserved for silly "sing like an opera singer" days at home .. it sounds so much better and "like I mean it" that that is how I sing now. Sarah, you just have to find your strong voice, fake it 'til you make it and ignore the jibes ... if you are the only woman in the band your female voice will be a great addition to the sound. The singer's probably afraid you find that out and steal the limelight ... -
Try an extra long Hercules,BUT they are fragile,Ive never had one I didnt break, they dont like heavy useage. BEWARE OF PLASTIC PARTS!!!
Which stand was that, Ross? Mine are fine but I'd like to know if I need to take care of certain bits
What do people recommend? Not sure what I'd need to be able to hold my Dean explorer but most of the stands I've seen wouldn't fit it.. Any help would be much appreciated!
+1 on the herculese neck Auto Grab hanging ones. I have two GS414B's and they are very stable - I even hang my Stag upright stick on one with no problems, even on bouncy stages .. Mark at Bass Direct (Poptart on here) was doing a Basschat deal on his - free postage I think .. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp..._Auto_Grab.html Or use a MarkBass Bass Keeper strap thing to tie it to the side of your amp.

PMT Southend-On-Sea charging £10 for a used cardboard box
OldGit replied to peted's topic in General Discussion
I always get shipping boxes from my LMS .. Sometimes they give them to me and sometimes they are a fiver for the staff buns fund .. Either way is fine with me but that guy seems to need a bit of a reallty/customer relations check. -
Have to admit - we only did 30 mins and I was struggling with the arm fatigue - don't envy you the full night - good luck Andy
Yeah I'm planning a week's worth of intensive training at least 3 30 minute slots per day, Lots or powerball work and pasta supper beforehand; Plenty of fluids on the night Actually it's a very laid back band and as it's a trad ceilidh there will be plenty of arm rest between each number. They also like me to play root 5th in G a lot so that's easier, open strings etc ..

" does anyone listen to the lyrics?" er, no...

Delberthot siad: " I used my acoustic bass for the first time for this song which sounded good but fed back when I got anywhere near my cab. I would invest in one of those covers that goes over the soundhole but it is oval and I've never seen one that shape before." Crafter BA400? I had one before .. There's a feedback control switch marked "phase". If you push that in it "moves" the feedback frequency to a different one Well that's my interpretation of what happens, and sometimes that fixes the problem for a particular room/stage/amp combination
Nope... that's the honest price for replacement Warwick parts! OK you have to add on P&P but it's reasonable and if you are buying a whole bunch of stuff then costs are distributed. I'm buying a few bits and bobs next week (grub screws, bridge saddles etc) so I'll let you know what the service is like
I guess you don't need a third party supplier then ... Quite fancy those knobs with the pip on top ...
I think the Jamerson / Kaye thing is a WHOLE BIG topic on it's own. Looking at some US sites they get VERY het up over it. S
Been covered ad naseum on the forum .. have a fertle in advanced search and have a read.
Ok, so this may be a little controversial but I really like Michele Stodart of the Magic Numbers.
+1 here. Very nice bass lines. and, is it Christmas yet? Sod it, I'm not waiting another 5 months .. Tracy Wormworth's greatest hit (IMHO) "Since the demise of the Waitresses, Tracy Wormworth has probably been involved with more high profile pop records than any other band members. Her list of credits include Sting, Wayne Shorter and B52s. "
We played at a wedding last night. We decided to keep "St James' Infirmiary" off the setlist...
Playing a wedding on Friday depping with a band that does this nearly every gig - no vocals though just a wonderfully melancholy violin melody .. We drop in "Shotgun Wedding" if appropriate ...
Hello Bass-chatters, Thank you for airing BGM in your forums. It's virtually impossible for me to respond to each and every item of comment and will be difficult to even follow up from this mail as I'm now in the final stages of the next issue production. As most of my time is spent with the magazine you'll only find me dropping in occasionally - no offence meant if I don't reply to a post! I do read the forums and many others that take the magazine as a topic. There are so many issues raised that I think I will have to pencil in the next available Bass Bash to say hello and take on board what's been raised. Communicating one-to one or one to many (!) often reaps greater reward than a misinterpreted post in my opinion. It's impossible to please every bass player all the time but we do strive to reach as many players as possible and if Bass Chatters feel opportunities are being missed I always try to put those matters right. There are however some commercial realities that sometimes tie our hands and to be compared to other publications that have publishing budgets running in the millions is something I can't do a great deal about. I'd love BGM to look like Autocar but we'd need a lot more money! No other UK mag feels a bass specialist mag is worth it. Even the US Bass Guitar Magazine has pulled the plug for low-enders last year. We are celebrating our 6th year and want many more! I hope you'll find our next issue exciting and refreshing. There's some product exclusive reviews, a MEGA stomp box feature and much more. The cover artist will of course inspire debate... So Guildford it is - schedule permitting - and I guess I'll have to bring a bass or two... Adrian Ashton Editor Bass Guitar Magazine
Adrian, Welcome and well done for being brave enough to raise your head above the parapet here. Lots of ideas already for you to chomp on and lots more in the general bass bits of this forum, just take a sample of the current hot threads Shuttle Vs MB, What is a tweeter?, Jazz Standards, I guess you do already but monitoring what we are nattering about on here will give you ideas for small articles. Some of us will also be happy to write them ..., Why don't you sponsor a special area here for things related to your magazine? This is a terrific direct channel from many many UK bassist to you and I am sure that would be invaluable in garnering ideas for the content and thus presenting what people would like to read in the magazine. Now, as a regular reader I would just like to raise one point about the last magazine: Was it not rather ironic that your editorial was basically one big rant about everyone else going on about the gender of women bassists, rather than their bass playing, culminating with you stating your gender in the by line? Why mention their, or your, gender at all? I enjoy the mag every time. Keep it up. OG
Just got back... ...playing Purple Haze during the set to a typical wedding crowd wasn't a great idea. Any other 'classics' to avoid ?....
Eh? I play the intro to Purple Haze at nearly every wedding gig we play ... Ok I confess we don't play the whole thing, that would be silly
Of course the biggest kick in the teeth is that you can buy the Warwick ones direct from the Warwick shop for about £4.50 each (+P&P)! http://shop.warwick.de/index.php/cat/c48_o...pare-Parts.html
Wow There's some good bits on there for projects .. Knobs for 4.6 Euro? That's about £3.50, or am I missing something Stack knob sets for about £4?
I love that conversation with the hotels. "The meal starts at 5.30, speeches are 6.30 and you're on at 7 for the first dance. You can set up after the speeches". "Remind me the number of guests?" says I. "120". "120 people, 3 course meal in an hour. Speeches lasting negative 1 hour - impossible. We'll see!" I seem to remember starting the first dance at 9.... We ask for an absolute min of 1 hour but prefer two. Tomorrow we have 2 hours to set up and soundcheck before the meal, then we get to prop up the bar and eat food for 3 hours before the first dance
ha ha yeah Hotels must do 30 weddings a year and they still can't time them correctly. They never seem to work out that it takes 30 minutes to move 120 people from one room to another, 15 minutes to do a 5 minute best man speech, 45 minutes to hoik the guests off, clear and roll out the three big circular tables they have on the "stage" area ... . We have a bunch of tips we send out to anyone one asking us to play their wedding (including the gigs we can't do) It incudes "time everything carefully then double it. A laid back wedding day with loads of extra time is much better than fretting about people not being in the right place at the right time" and, of course, that way the band gets in on time, gets to play on time and gets to go home on time ..... It also includes "leave some time in the day to be alone together, say a clothes change The rest of the time you'll be too busy schmoozing the relatives to get any special time to yourselves... and it's your big day as a couple too." That always, er, goes down well, as it were.
Cheers will do. I remember it from the BW days coz you pointed out all our sites failings then but we just haven't done anything about it I'm embarrassed to say. Time for me to take executive action!!
Well only if you want people to find your website and book the band, otherwise just relax
Yes they did - bizarre that - it went down really well with the fairer sex. The feedback was generally really good anyway, but the ladies loved it... any idea why? I have a sudden compulsion to play it more frequently Andy
No idea, don't care why I'm planning a whole quiet wedding dep gig on it next Friday .. I'll take a EBG too in case of extreme arm fatigue but upright all night is the plan
Ironically "the flash we paid someone to do" is the whole fooking site. So I need a preety damn quick fix which looks nice, maybe I'll start designing it next week...
hummmmmm Best have a trawl through my band websites thread then (linked from my sig) sorry I've not edited it since the move from BW, hey, it's only been a year Worth the read though, or so I am told.
Pics?
Sure I have one of my working area, amp, cabs, EUB and stuff .. is that what you mean? I'm afraid the others are for our private collection/band website ... She was extremely nice and chatted to us old guys - how rare is that for a very attractive young woman - and told me all about the Scots (Scotch?) diaspora and working as a croupier in one of those posh wedding mobile casinos ... and she was sober
We just keep getting weddings, and to be honest, we don't want to do them, but the money's too good to turn away. We're doing Muse, Foos, Stereophonics, U2, Chillis, and we keep telling people we're not wedding music, but they keep booking us. I just get fed up with looking into the audience and seeing pensioners with fingers in thier ears, and children sliding across the dance floor on thier knees, while we're halfway through My Iron Lung by Radiohead. It's bizarre.
Yeah sometimes you have to manage the client We make sure they realise that it's the mothers of the bride and groom who are the ones to please, no matter what the B&G think themselves ... And we say no if we don't fit, or treble the fee .. that seem to work quite well ...
You have to make sure your website works properly too Ours is shockingly tempermental and getting worse with age; I'm going to get rid of all the flash that we paid someone to do coz it's not helping anything!
Good idea. Flash is a pain for all sorts of reason. Mostly to do with google but a lot of people don't like Flash websites... Little bits of Flash are fine buut it's like flangers a little can really add interest but too much can really distract.
